"Last weekend my wife’s family held a gathering of sorts at the Mulberry Tree in Braintree. The food was possibly the worst I’ve eaten and was as far from being reasonably priced as it could be. All the little locals are now owned by chains and we pay our hard earned for frozen nuggets and chips sat with groupon vouchered benefit family’s glued to their phones whilst their half bred kids run riot and then there’s the staff of whom we are an inconvenience to. So when my sister in law and her boyfriend of whose family supply most of the genuine restaurants in the Essex and Suffolk areas with their meat instead of brake bros, they happened to mention the Vine in Great Bardfield. With my 10 year old son racing locally and friends attending to spectate we soon got talking about lunch? We happened to mention the Vine and once the track action finished we were quickly making our way to sunny Great Bardfield. The Vine looks like a traditional pub from the front and has parking accessed via the side entrance. There was a large garden with tables and play area for the kids to play. The restaurant itself is small with a quirky feel and the staff not only very welcoming but they can talk by opening and closing their mouths. There is no pre booking (according to the website) and we arrived unannounced as a group of 7 and got seated right away. The menus were clean and the food has different names so you can read it and not opt for the usual default setting so many of us so often do. We opted for Disco Brisket and The classic burgers, fries on the side with additional onion rings, mozzarella bites and a double portion of chicken wings. The kids had burgers too and this is where things for me set the standard as my youngest of whom is on occasions fussy with his food ate the whole thing before insisting it was the best burger he had eaten. I have to agree as do our friends. The portions were large enough to request a box for the chicken wings to take home, of which when asked the staff were obliging. We had an extremely nice meal with drinks and the bill was a little over £100. The Vine not only exceeded my expectations but has set the bar for other restaurants to catch up or end up as yet another curry house. Cannot wait to return for what will be an adult only evening and my only negative comment was not trying the desserts. The nearest ice cream to us is a drive to Thurrock or to Snugburys in Cheshire so a milk shake or rare flavoured ice cream would be 10/10"

"do you want steak? be better ready for all options. specials board longer than her, incredible selection and variations available. the wine list was also extensive and adaptable to the steak they chose. starter were a nice platform to jump for the steak. steak boiled quite perfect to her wish, nothing against blood, but was on medium rare for the rib eye atmosphere is pure london vibes and revealable steaks to show the quality. aperitifs and desserts round off the evening (with a firm in understanding). very pleasant evening."

"A lovely, friendly pub and restaurant. Staff friendly and efficient. Drinks selection extensive enough and well-priced. There is definitely something for everyone. Great cookery, sauces excellent. The kitchen really know what they are doing. Three sharing plates (pictured), two of the most expensive mains, two desserts, a half craft beer, a good bottle of Gruner and a coffee was £94 before a tip. Other three course options are available at discounted price."

"Review is based on the server alone. Ordered two coffees only to be grunted at that they didn't have the milk we wanted. Then assumed we were sitting in and slammed plates down on the counter and when we said we were taking away they were swiftly removed. Coffees slammed on the table, half empty for the price that we paid and staff was that unapproachable we couldn't even ask for them to be topped up. On top of this the dirty looks and stares were ridiculous to the point that we were outside the shop fixing our coffee lids only to be glared at through the window. I understand Sundays are a busy time at the end of the week but if you can't put on a brave face and do your job well then maybe it isn't the job for you!"

"We used to go here all the time but times have changed along with the service and the food. I ordered my favourite meal steak and it was a disappointing dinner. The steak come cut up into slices i dont know anyone who cuts a steak into slices before serving. I could understand it on other meats but not a steak. It was not cooked to my request and the chips were standard. We had a sticky toffee pudding for desert and it was disgusting. It tasted burnt and was crunchy around the edges as though they put it in the microwave for too long. We had only two courses and it took over 2.5hrs to serve both courses. For the price of the meal you would get a better and cheaper in a chain pub like weatherspoons or beefeater. Also i was drinking moretti and every pint was flat and at one point my partner had lipstick on her glass and she does not wear lipstick "

Friendly and accommodating, up for a laugh and excellent food at good prices. We will be sure to stop here again if we are ever passing."

"From start to finish this was an amazing stay. Jon contacted us before we arrived to chat about arrangements for our son, and when we arrived we received such a warm welcome Jon and the team made an effort to learn our names and doted on our 3 year old who was very spoilt. Dinner was incredible, the cocktails were amazing and the mulled cider was just perfect next to the lit fire. The room was very clean and comfortable and the bath in the room was really cute! Breakfast was hands down the best smashed avocado I’ve EVER had. The team at breakfast were so lovely and friendly. Jon has built an impeccable team for the pub they’re all super friendly, chatty , attentive and honestly the whole place is brilliant. The homemade biscuits were gorgeous! We will definitely be back thank you for such a great stay!"

"Great country pub on outskirts of Warrington. 3 real ales on well kept. Friendly couple who run the place. I’ve stopped a couple of times in van when working in area. Peaceful and laid Back with a Nice vibe. Open for breakfast and lunch wed sun which is ideal if stopping the night in a camper. Cheapest ale in local area too. Recommended if you're around this way"

"Just back from a Sunday lunch with friends and all 8 can say is what an improvement since last time we were there. The new owners have improved it enormously. We had the roast pork, roast beef and 'Nelson ' roast which is a bit of both. Portions were generous to put it mildly! Suffice to say I 'm not bothering with an evening meal. Food was well presented and delicious. The decor has also been redone and feels very homely and comfortable with nice touches in the decorations dotted about the place. For those who want a challenge they do an 80 oz (yes eighty ounce! steak which if you can finish the whole meal you get for free. Staff are friendly, efficient and courteous. Location is right next to the canal and in summer it 's an incredibly pleasant place to sit and watch narrow boats going up and down the canal through the lock. All in all top marks! Just been back tonight and we both had the 12oz rump steak. Have to say it was the equal of any steak I 've had anywhere. Superb."

"Booked a company team meal for 8 people... Arrived and was directed to our table, the staff were lovely and overall we felt very welcomed, however, it sounded like a children's party (so much background noise, voices, shouting in fact, it was SO hard to even hear the people sitting opposite me! Admittedly it didn't help the lads next to us were clearly getting drunk. Personally, I would have expected the staff to have noticed and politely asked them to respect other people in the restaurant. Being completely honest though that's not the main reason why I've provided 1 STAR The waiter was actually so rude and unprofessional it actually really annoyed me! I ordered my STEAK along with everyone else which lets be honest, wasn't exactly cheap... all the food arrived at the same time which was fantastic ONLY to find mine was stone COLD! I don't like to complain but considering the price of my STEAK costs more than 2 meals drinks elsewhere, bottom line I wasn't HAPPY and called the waiter over to our table. Advised the waiter that my STEAK is COLD and his response was (It's meant to be like that sir! Cut a long story short, the waiter argued with me at the table for about 5 minutes to which I replied: I've eaten at Miller Carter in Basingstoke and know how this STEAK is severed, more to the point I'm not happy with it! I asked the waiter WHY are you arguing with me which at that point the waiter looked at me and said (what do you want me to do heat it up on the grill or make you a new one? which shocked me and I said: I'm happy for you to warm it up if that's how the CHEF wishes to serve it back to me at which point the waiter gets a little and says (I'll just make you a new one . 2 minutes later the waiter returns to our table, leans down to my ear/side (so not may people can hear him and quietly says (I'm really sorry sir, the chef advised the STEAK was cooked BLU which is not what you ordered and confirms why it was COLD . 10 15 minutes later, the waiter brings my new STEAK over to the table which was cooked to perfection the ONLY downside was that I didn't now have enough time to eat it as we had a comedy event booked in Reading which was a real SHAME and a WASTE of MONEY!"

"Really enjoyed coming here. Came here for dinner. We liked the choices on the menu of a 'bigger plate ' or a 'smaller plate ' and the 'bar snacks '. Great choices on the menu, reasonable prices, and all ingredients were from local seas, farms, and producers. The pub was quirky with a great atmosphere. The food was delicious! Highly recommend coming here."

"my man and I celebrated our high-time anniversary in cafe du soleil on Wednesday. it was our first time to eat there and we both absolutely loved it! we both got a free glass blow as soon as we were shown on our table to wish us a happy jubilee that was a really nice note. the whole food was top notch, like the service, no complaining, what ever. I would not have asked for a better jubilee meal. would definitely recommend and will be visited again."

"Good, prompt service. The portions were a bit small but the food was nice. The green curry was very nicely flavoured but needed more heat and I don't like mine very hot. The beef brisket dish was absolutely superb and the pad thai had nicely balanced flavours. I personally didn't like the seating, most tables sat eight so different couples are given different corners of the (admittedly large) tables. Overall I would eat here again, not something I say often."

"Went here for evening dinner, did not disappoint. Despite it's out of the way location clearly have great chefs and quality ingredients, the steak I had was cooked perfectly and always good when the sauce is included rather than having to add and pay separately, I hate that in places. Overall great food and service so know where to eat if visiting the area again!"

"our second stay in the golden lion and we have breakfast and din in the restaurant at both locations. the personal was always pleasant, attentive and helpful. the restaurant eating was good, we have a special steak and mushroom cake at one of our meal times at this opportunity cost, and it was most substantially and filling we had to go to dessert! the restaurant is a very pleasant place to eat and I appreciated the drowned thwaites beer."

"The food was really good. And the service was even better.. We had our little boy with us who is aged 5. The lady who served us believe her name was Eleana.. our little boy loves role play and was pretending to take our orders on his tablet.. Eleana asked if he wanted to take our pudding order on her ordering tablet.. he was over the moon she then asked if he wanted to come into the kitchen to bring out our puddings which was a lovely touch as it was our wedding Anniversary.. he loved doing it and everyone was clapping him. Another young girl asked if he wanted to set a table that she was doing.. this all made his day/week on his holidays... he was super proud of himself... this was going above and beyond the service expected.. getting the little ones involved.. fantastic service from those mentioned and all the people working that day... on top of the food being spot on.. thankyou"

"without any doubt one of the best burgers we have ever eaten, totally delicious..as vegetarian some burgers can be a bit bland, but this was so delicious. my man had the blue cheeseburger and was equally thrilled with his delicious burger...and to drive it out of the service was fantastic and the place itself was really nice, a beautiful building, very cozy. very recommended and will be back"

"The dirty bottles had a few different options and the staff were very knowledgeable about ingredients and what could be changed to make things vegan. For starters we shared the tempura cauliflower with chilli sauce which was so tasty. The portion was small though, which the staff acknowledged before we did and took money off the bill very lovely! Then for mains, I got the spicy black bean burger with chips. The burger was so delicious and was dressed perfectly, it all went together so well. The actual patty was a bit messy as it fell apart. Although the onion rings weren’t labelled vegan, the staff made sure they were cooked in the vegan oil which made them suitable for vegans!"
