"Hospitality businesses have had it tough over the past few years, but even making allowances for that, there’s no excuse for probably the worst meal I’ve had for a very long time. I should have paid attention to other recent reviews. It takes a particular skill (and not a good one) to be able to serve up a meal so completely lacking in flavour and taste. First up, the restaurant lacks any atmosphere. Granted it was early evening but we were put in an empty room so cold we had to keep our coats on. A couple of small heaters had no impact at all. On the positive side, service was attentive. The mixed starter plate was the usual mixed starter in a Chinese restaurant. Not home made, all bought in, we’ve had it numerous times. The chicken satay was a particular low point but fairly typical of all the meat dishes, a rare combination of tough but watery. As for the sauces, absolutely a million miles away from even moderate flavour to coat the meats. And sesame toast and spring roll – how can you cook the flavour out of that? Crispy aromatic duck with pancakes – the pancakes were the only things as expected. A bit of a high point, almost. There was no crispy and no aromatic, the duck was bordering on tepid and again no flavour. We had a polite word with our server who said he would speak to the kitchen to see what could be done. Given they were unlikely to be preparing fresh for us, I doubted we’d get anything. Three dishes came out flavourless and barely warm. A chicken dish came out with the server proclaiming the hope that this dish would be different. Indeed it was. It was hot, for a start. Then we found out why, it seemed like in order to get some flavour into the dish, it had been given a quick go in a wok and doused in soy sauce. So, it did have flavour, just not the flavour of the dish. Given it was so cold in there we couldn’t really even laugh the experience off as ‘one of those things’. I can’t recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy."

"Our visit was for a birthday meal. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was good. We chose quite spicy dishes. The food was not piled high (thank goodness) but in reasonable sized portions. We like to leave a restaurant wanting more not uncomfortably full or with a bag full of leftovers and that's exactly how it was. Will definitely book again."

"Have been here several times and always go for the evening buffet. Which you can do at lunch or dinner time. It £29.99 a person but you can eat, as much as you like. The portions are small which is great as it means you can have lots of different things rather than the masses they give you when you order a take away. "we read reviews before we left and they were great. when we moved out, we almost drove away, as it doesn't look very exciting, looks more like a greasy spoon transport caffe than an authentic thai restaurant. we just tried to find the inner much more welcoming, it was empty, but it was a half-week birthday party and another table later joined us the staff was really friendly, helpful and attentive, without being excessive. the selection of foods is very diverse, for everyone something. we kidnapped and went for a few of the mixed solid' and they were great, really good severance of foods that tasted fresh, looked inviting and tasted great a visit worth"

"love that you can order dishes from different menus! we sat on the terrace and order a mix of tasty things, including the Kimchi-Fries that were incredible! the terrace was beautiful and the heating kept us toast. I was on a date. I don't eat sushi, so it was nice that I have something! would also be ideal for a large group. only four stars because the drinks came a few minutes after eating, but I understand that it cannot be coordinated when ordering them from different menus. will come back in any case!"

Last night was a visit that we were hoping would remind us of our celebratory Cantonese wedding meal we had years ago when we were married abroad. Henry Wong had come highly recommended and l will say your actual food was delicious but the meal was marred almost from the start.We had booked several weeks ago and we like to arrive in time for our booking, in this case minutes before on arrival we were greeted with almost a grunt and a demeanour of what are you doing here! Not a good evening how can l help you? We were then rushed to a table that wasn't even set, we'd have happily waited and even had a drink at the bar that was in front of us but that wasn't even suggested. We then ordered our drinks which were fine except that we had to ask three times before the additional water that we had ordered was brought to the table . We were only a table of three but our starters and mains didn't come together. My son and l were waiting for some time after our rice and noodles and my husbands main had been delivered.This is not the kind of service we expected, we didn't seem to have a designated waiter, l think we were served by different people, at at no time were we asked if everything was alright, was there anything else we wanted. We even had to wait minutes for the bill.This was a celebratory meal for my husband and l, we were not expecting any free extras but your web site mentions how you cater for celebrations and we did say on booking and on confirming our booking that it was our silver wedding anniversary ad it wasn't even wasn't even referred to.All in all we were totally underwhelmed and disappointed and what should have been a lovely evening was an expensive let down.Seriously disappointed"

"I went here with my gf for mum, I really enjoyed it and it seems dona good trade supply food to all the demand I saw to eat a series of chaps. the dimme sum was freshly tasting, it was very tasty and I sometimes underestimated how temperature hot it would be and I had to wait until I had to cool down. I'm from hongkong and I was impressed with the food. the ribs had a beautiful sauce they had in their mouth tender flesh. the siu mai well made and freshly made. the crispy pork bauchnabel bao was beautiful because the skin was so delicious and crispy in a white bao. the sweet fish cakes were so pleasant I ordered two plates. the dizzying dumplings were very well filled. they had nothing sweet, which I would recommend, because the fried milk bars were not on camp. excellent service the ladies there were so beautiful and polite. they made sure we were good at lunch. "We stayed in Colchester last year and eat at Chinatown, we were impressed by the superb food and the friendly service. We returned to Colchester for a concert and immediately decided that we had to try Chinatown again, we were not disappointed. "This restaurant has now changed its name to Blue Bamboo. We had a great dinner here, the food was amazing as usual much nicer than your average Chinese restaurant! Try the dim sum basket and the sweet and sour King Prawns FANTASTIC! Note also, you get 25% off dinner (excluding Dim Sum), which is a nice bonus, although I don't know why they don't just make the menu 25% cheaper. I would not recommend desert here as it is overpriced around £8.50. Overall a great place!!"

"We booked the Firecracker Restaurant to celebrate my mother’s 70th Birthday. There was approximately 40 family members and we were given the main restaurant dining area. We had the option of choosing 8 dishes from the party menu and was allowed to bring cake and a few decorations. The manager and staff were very friendly and could not do enough to make our experience a Night to Remember. The staff were very helpful and offered their suggestions to make the night run smoothly. The food was amazing and plentiful with compliments from all family members. The entertainment was great and we ended up having a full blown party where people from other rooms came out to join in the celebration. My mum thoroughly enjoyed her night and will remember it forever. Thank you so much to the manager and staff at the Firecracker Restaurant for making my mother’s birthday special."

"I wanted to have Thai food with my daughter. Both of us had spent a while in Thailand and really enjoyed the cuisine. My daughter wanted to try it, but she didn't really enjoy it. The food was good, but the overall experience was not. I asked a young girl if we could use the restroom, but the waitress rudely said no. I felt embarrassed for the girl, as Thais are usually more welcoming. Our meal was good, but my daughter lost her appetite after that incident. When we asked to take the rest of our meal home, we were charged an extra £1 for a take-out box, which surprised me as we were in Finchley, not the West End. There were no hand drying facilities in the restroom, and when I mentioned this to the waitress, she was rude. We paid the bill, did not leave a tip, and were charged an additional £2 for the take-out box. It was a disappointing evening and we will not be returning. Mai ow."

"The roast duck (off the bone as requested; but with an unannounced and unexpected £1 extra charge! and crispy pork were good. The ordered vegetables were ok. Singapore noodles so-so. The mixed seafood platter was definitely overpriced! Service seemed uncoordinated without an apparent dedicated waiter to our table. It was very noisy so if we return, it'll probably be for lunch instead. I asked for the service charge to be taken off the bill and this was done promptly and without comment. I prefer to give tips in cash direct to the waiting staff. We would still go back but definitely not during their expected busy periods. The noise ruins the experience I think."
