"I visited my elderly Mum today, she suggested going to the Derby Arms for a roast dinner as she'd eaten there recently with my sister. However they were fully booked, so I looked online and found Galu. The reviews were great and my Mum has only ever heard good things from friends and neighbours. So I called and booked for 12:45 Sunday 21st Jan 2024. We were both pleasantly surprised to see roast dinners on the menu ... Mum order lamb and I ordered beef part of their set menu. When the dinners arrived, you could see straight away that the lamb was Very Fatty (not even crispy) when my my tried eating it, it was both tough and chewy! As for the beef, this was cooked ok and edible, although I asked for the beef to be medium, but it was more well done. The waiter came over to ask if the meal was ok, I highlighted how the lamb was... the manager then came over and offered my Mum a slice of beef to compensate, bearing in mind she ordered lamb. Mum subsequently found that some of her roast potatoes were hard inside! I finished my meal, but could see Mum really didn't enjoy hers leaving a substantial amount on her plate, and having tried her lamb it really was inedible! We were then offered a full list of desserts rather than the set menu, having chocolate brownie and creme brûlée (both were gorgeous) When the bill arrived, I was hoping they would have somehow made amends, but alas no ... as Mum doesn't like to cause a fuss and it was her treat, I decided not to say anything, although the staff manager could tell we weren't happy. Having come from East Sussex for the day and regularly have great Sunday roasts in local pubs, I was hoping for something special in this restaurant, but sadly that wasn't the case. In fact it's probably one of the worst roast dinners I've had in a long time. I very much doubt we'll return ..."

"A reasonable buffet experience not far apart from the run of the Mill however the pictures make it look like an up market Chinese serving what looks like really good food however we chose the buffet. everything was going well we ate the starters we got the Duck but when it came to ordering in the mains the staff member turns round and says you haven't finished the Duck you need to finish the duck before you move on I looked at him puzzled and said politely there's just bones there and fat we've eaten all the meat he look surprised he looked at me removed the dish with an experience waiter he should have seen what was left on the plate we were allowed to continue absolutely disgusted how dare he decide whether we've cleared our plate like children we refuse to pay the so-called 10% service charge which these restaurants are being very cleverly adding onto the bill the right to remove wasn't an option we were told we would do it kindly this time but next time we won't sorry for this place they won't be a next time we won't be coming back what these places need to remember that everybody that's coming in has paid the stupid £14 pounds to come into Portsmouth clean air payment and then have to put up a stupidness like this you're meant to come here for a good time not leave disappointed ..... about time review read and what a complete waste of time your response was eat as much as you can we did we cleared the plates I do hope this is put everybody off going here there's a shame I didn't read the reviews before I went myself what an embarrassment"

"I arrived on time and presented my self to the receptionist saying I had a reservation for afternoon tea. A waiter immediately popped out and greeted me by name and led me to my prepared table. As well as a dessert plate with cutlery my table had a small side plate and butter knife, a selection of 6 jars of jam (raspberry, strawberry, apricot and marmalade (all Wilkin , salt and pepper mills and a bowl of sugar. My order was taking promptly and the requested glass of tap water and pot of tea arrived promptly. A small jug of milk and some pats of butter were also brought.Soon my sandwiches arrived. There were six sandwiches; two each of grilled aubergine and cream cheese; chicken and salad; smoked salmon and cream cheese. The grilled aubergine and cream cheese isn 't something I would have thought of creating my self but it was surprisingly tasty. Along with my sandwiches were nine fancies; a small pastry cup of vanilla custard with strawberry, a small pastry cup of vanilla custard with a fresh mint sprig and a small pastry cup of chocolate custard with cranberries as well as two each of three different biscuits. All were excellent with the chocolate custard being particularly memorable.A few minutes later my scones (one plain, one fruit arrived fresh from the oven along with two little pastries and some cream.A requested hot water top up for my tea was no problem and I was offered more sandwiches which, as the food originally brought was so plentiful, I regretfully had to decline. This was an excellent tea and I enjoyed it very much. The food was very good and the staff attentive but discreet. My only niggle is the discretionary service charge . It 's not mentioned on the website and it 's not mentioned on the menu posted outside. I 'm not sure if it 's on the table menus as I didn 't really look at it, knowing already what I wanted. In the UK I 'm used to paying the price quoted for goods and services so to have 12.5% added without warning is a step in the wrong direction. I 'm guessing management will say that, as I don’t have to pay it, they don 't have to mention it beforehand.Anyway, the meal would be good value at £26 service but I had a offer so got it for £16 service which made it exceptionally good value."

"Checked this place out with one of my friends after a tiring day exploring the city and getting rained on lots. Super lovely and laidback yet also really attentive staff. Really appreciated the dedicated vegan menu as it makes it much easier to look through wished the main ingredients were listed on the menu, as some dish titles were a little vague and I wasn't sure what to order! Though I asked one of the waiters and he was really helpful and could list off the bat what was in the dishes, so it wasn't too much trouble. I ended up ordering the vegan Wee Buddha curry. The portion sizes were massive and that alone justified the price point in my opinion, it took me like over an hour to finish my dish. Even moreso though, the food tasted wonderful the veggies were super fresh and flavourful, and the rice had that perfect sticky texture that restaurants don't always get right. The food was piping hot when it arrived and I had to let it cool for quite a while, which tends to be a fairly reliable indicator of quality, in my experience at least and it was true on this occasion for sure. We also didn't have to wait very long at all for our food either. Also worth a mention, the vibe and decor of the place is really nice relaxing! And not usually a fan of music in the background, but it was an appropriate volume and whoever was on playlist duty was working overtime because the songs slapped, it was tune after tune. Overall, I'm pretty glad I sorted out where we'd eat in advance of our trip, as this place didn't tend to come up on any suggested Maps searches or in recommendations I was looking at for veggie/vegan food. Which I'm really surprised about given how good it is, and the really decent number of dishes on offer. Underrated I guess? Hope it gets some more hype! <3"
