"After a two year gap, it was good to be back at Fraiche. We had been booked to return in spring last year but, of course, Covid intervened. We’ve been coming for years and always enjoy Marc’s food. It’s interesting. It’s imaginative. And, more than anything, it’s delicious. Little has changed. There’s still the giant videos playing on the walls of the bar area. When you arrive, it’s restful ocean scenes – a bit like I imagine it is if you have a fish tank at home. When you come back for coffee, it’s changed to scenes from space, complete with appropriate sound track – Rocket Man, Space Oddity and the like. There’s snacks to be eaten here. Firstly, “Garden” a drink made from cucumber and whatever else Marc has picked from his allotment that day (he told us later that pretty much all the veg he uses comes from the allotment . There’s the usual spiced pecans and some British charcuterie. And a little seaweed and trout roe tartlet. And an onion and Parmesan foam. When you’re seated at your table, there’s a final snack. A little waffle, each square filled with either feta or cherry tomato. Possibly the best of the snacks. In what seems a new direction for Marc, several of the dishes lean towards East Asia. The first up is Chawanmushi – a Japanese set custard made from dashi, with the flavour of seaweed and a powerful smokiness from cubes of eel. It seems to be fashionable to serve sweetbreads in a deep fried crisp coating. My partner isn’t a great fan of them but reckoned these were the best ever tasted – a firmer texture than usual. It comes with a little maitake mushroom (Google later told me I’d better know this as “Hen of the Woods” and a soy based dressing. Somewhere round here, bread was served. It’s always a course in its own right at Fraiche. And it’s always top notch. This was a light as a feather brioche and there’s butter to slather on it, or olive oil to dunk it in. Both work. Next, there was a cold “soup” made from crème fraiche. Chopped hazelnuts and a little, very peppery, watercress provide a texture contrast. Then, very seasonal white asparagus comes chopped, along with girolles and courgettes. I think on every visit to Fraiche, it’s the fish course I’ve enjoyed most and it was no different this time. Sashimi grade tuna is very lightly seared but there’s no sense of rawness here. There’s some baby pak choi and a citrussy ponzu dressing. For the final savoury course, there’s farmed Anjou pigeon. It’s a milder flavoured bird than wild ones you usually get in the UK. It comes, seemingly quite simple, with a slice of earthy morcilla, Jerusalem artichoke puree and an artichoke crisp. I thought it was lovely and only just missed out on being my favourite course. On the other hand, my life companion didn’t like the texture and left most of it (which, of course, meant I got seconds . There’s then the first of three desserts. First up, an ice lolly. I do no justice to it by calling it a lolly. This is no ordinary lolly. This is a lolly shaped like lips. Ruby red lips made from Morello cherries, with a hint of lemon and, inside, a little mint chocolate. Then there’s a shot glass of a refreshing strawberry “soup”, topped with slice of earthy truffle. And finally, a honey, chocolate and pineapple mousse again not too sweet. Well, I say “finally” but it wasn’t. As I mentioned earlier, we were back in the bar area watching the space video. And Marc appears. He presents a “planet”. A metal sphere which he opens to reveal a macaron each. With the cooking over for the evening, he’s able to chat for a little while, telling us he’s been playing with flavours while the restaurant has been shut. He’s soon back with a little tray of chocolate petit fours. So, all that was left was to get the bill. This isn’t the sort of food we want to eat regularly but it is food we want to eat now and again. So, off we went into the cold and wet of a Merseyside June evening. With a little bag of cookie dough to bake the next day. I think we might have preferred the little cup of hot chocolate that we got one winter visit."

"we have eaten in the clubhouse all the time serve and always enjoyed it. it was our high-time anniversary, so we thought we were going to the “thanks clubhouse it Friday “ deal 3 courses with a glass wein for two. £55 when we arrive, we got a great welcome and shown on our table. the menus came, but no Friday menu. We waited a few minutes and had to ask for the Friday Deal menu. we heard that neighboring tables ask for the Friday menu. not surprising, as the main menu has become quite expensive. we felt that the staff was more than a bit involuntary to offer the right menu. When it arrived, we were surprised that the normal 3 choice per. the curs had been reduced to only 2 per course. the review of the clubhouse website, as I write, still shows 3 choices per curs. disappointment when we look forward to the muscheln as a coup d’état. we have asked to jump from the set menu, but was said “ that is not hoe it works “ the set menu choice we are all more expensive than the mush £11 chowder £13 and salat £12. we ordered our eating and enjoyed our stater and net. the desert was openly poor. when we asked about our bill, we were surprised to see £107. in that we had been charged for desert 2x£8.50, although it is included in the Friday deal. bs k came the bill. narrower inspection shower we had been charged for all our drinks, even if the Friday deal contained a glass wein. the bill went back to remove more £15. zip bill £77. there was no tipp that poor show clubhouse gave. if they put a deal on respect and hug him or don't do it"

"Booked a table of 5 for my birthday dinner. We were promptly seated then immediately asked for drinks orders before even being offered a drinks menu or water. After we had ordered drinks we were being rushed into ordering some food, every two minutes different waiters coming and asking if we are ready to order (at least 7 times). After we did order and the food was brought out, we were then just forgotten about and nobody came over anymore to check if we needed any more drinks (4 out of 5 glasses were empty) or if the food was ok. (It was- but no one checked). After we had finished dining, we still had empty glasses and had to wait 20+ minutes until we eventually stopped a waiter walking past and asked if we could order more drinks. The drinks then took another 15 minutes to come. It was also very disappointing that although we had mentioned on the booking itself that it was for my birthday, there was no acknowledgement of this (I have been before and had received a plate with ‘happy birthday’ written on it in some kind of sauce with a sparkler). My sister even went to ask the woman working on the front desk and received a standoffish attitude back saying no. When the £235 bill came, it even listed ‘birthday plate £0.00’ on it!!! That really let the evening down. The interactions with the staff themselves were great, they were very polite and personable but the actual level of service of being rushed to order and then totally forgotten about really dampened what could have been a fantastic evening."

"With an all-in cost of £75 per person (including water taxi and tip), we expected to feel like we couldn’t wait to return. Instead, we left thinking it was a night to forget; maybe it was an off night for the cook or perhaps they were just having a bad day. Perhaps it’s the end of the season and some have lost interest? Let me start with the positives: the location is excellent. A beautiful autumn sunset and calm waters made for a lovely arrival. The service was decent, and there’s no complaint on that front. However, the meal itself was extremely average. We’re not food snobs, but we could have prepared a better dinner ourselves at home. The crispy squid was anything but crispy, and the scallops, priced at £5 each, lost their delicate flavor. As for the plaice, it was hardly legal catch size and may have even fallen under the limit. There was barely any meat on each fish, and we struggled to peel it from the bone. Moreover, the plate was overloaded with unnecessary garnish, which only added to the disappointment. The preparation and presentation felt amateurish and mediocre, as if the dishes were hurriedly thrown together. We would have been better off at Rockfish or Neil’s in Sidmouth, which would have cost much less and provided far better quality fish. We're genuinely sorry to say that our experience at River Exe Restaurant was not enjoyable. We’re not the type to complain for the sake of it, but had we been dining alone and not with friends, we might have even sent our main course back. We can only hope this was an off night for them and that better experiences await others. However, we certainly won’t be rushing back, even if someone else is footing the bill."
