"This place is simply too expensive for what is delivered. There’s nothing wrong with the food per se, but the prices are astronomical. We ate the leek tart, as a starter and it was £12. It was fine, but didn’t deliver the impact we were expecting for the price. It wasn’t made fresh, and the side salad was dripping in bog standard vinaigrette. Not inedible, but nothing special. I had the salt and chilli squid with ‘Asian slaw’. I was expecting flavours of coriander, lemongrass, lime, mint; all what I would consider pan-Asian flavours. When the dish arrived I could see straight away it was not to be! Instead of what I’ve described there was a fairly ordinary looking salad, swimming in a pool of (what tasted like) supermarket hoi-sin sauce. Really too much and overly sweet. The squid itself was well cooked but a very sparse portion for £16. Other dishes included lobster, at almost £60 (market price apparently) which was competent but came with bought in chips. No flavour to chips, they were semi-stale. We had higher hopes, I’m afraid. The service and atmosphere were perfectly fine, no issues there. Staff were efficient and friendly. I’m afraid for us, holidaymakers willing to spend money, this restaurant doesn’t represent good value. I enjoy eating out, but I hate feeling ripped off…and I’m sorry to say, that’s how dining at ‘The Potted Lobster’ felt. Save yourself the bother and go to the local butcher/pie shop a few doors down. They were doing a roaring trade and I can see why!"

"When I heard of the pop up restaurant called The Fat Bear, I immediately thought it was named after me, and so booked a table. It is located in the Rising Sun pub a very short walk away from St Paul's Cathedral. This was only my second experience with a pop up (I believe so anyway to be honest the only part of my body that remembers the food I have consumed is my stomach after the Three Compasses in Hoxton last year (where I watched Game of Thrones. See that review, but beware of GoT spoilers... and so I was expecting the food to be brought to us while we were in the pub. This restaurant, however, was leasing the upper floor of the Rising Sun pub, which was a good thing as it had a much nicer atmosphere than its host. While the downstairs part was a rather dingy pub, the upstairs had a nice early 20th century feel to it, with fireplaces and mahogany tables. We were welcomed and seated by a very friendly waiter who also turned out to be the barman (and the chef, and the cleaner.. just kidding he was front of house . He had a beard, was a little plump and WELSH! Basically like me, except talented and of value to society! We were bound to get along... What amazed me in particular about his service was that this man knew EVERYTHING about the restaurant. From being able to fully explain the ingredients of each menu item, to selecting an optimal red wine to accompany our meal to making a virgin cocktail for my friend who was doing Dry January, to even the music that was playing! (We recognised a few covers from the setlist my friend recognised that cool song with the whistling that's always on the ads done in a folky way. I of course only picked up on the Game of Thrones theme being covered by a swing band... I like Thrones by the way... His service was attentive, thorough and of the kind of quality that made me feel like someone important like a recruitment consultant... As for the food, well I perused the menu trying to find a low fat option. I'm trying to lose weight you see... I want to change my name to Abstemious Jones.... so naturally I ordered a Sloppy Joe burger with Buffalo wings as a starter and the Fat Bear Sundae as a dessert. Meanwhile my far more sensible amigo, who already weighs half of what I do, ordered the catfish with his virgin cocktail. The wings arrived swiftly and they were delicious! The winning part was definitely the blue cheese sauce, which was a mild, but tasty antidote to the spicy (but not too spicy wings. My friend ordered the chicken livers and I had a try those were even better (they had some sort of chutney sauce inside . My Sloppy Joe Burger was the most disappointing part of my meal. Despite the delicious combination of sauce, salad and pickled red onion, the patty itself was comparatively bland. I should have ordered the catfish or the short ribs, as the catfish was spicy and delicious (I'm not usually a seafood fan and the ribs were boneless, meaty and came with two absolutely divine BBQ sauces. The best part of my main was the paprika spiced fries. I was stuffed, but there is always room for dessert! While my less disgracefully gluttonous friends shared the milk and cookies (where you add flavoured milk to cookie cups I went for the holistic Fat Bear Sundae, which is pretty much the whole dessert menu thrown into a sundae, with salted caramel, bourbon caramel (I think , oreo cookies, honeycomb, chocolate pieces and a cream cheese topping instead of your usual chantilly cream. It was one of the best sundaes I've ever had, and Chris (the expert waiter told me that usually it would include some Baked Alaska as well, but they were out. I couldn't believe it. It was already the dairy equivalent of the mixed grill and even so it was incomplete! I rolled down the stairs and waddled my way home, full of delicious food and very satisfied with a fantastic pop up. Pros: great service, good range of food, amazing sauces, lovely atmosphere, Chuck Norris waiter Cons: Sloppy Joe was average. Recommend to others: Hell yeah book a table while you can! It's only around for a year. I'll be back for livers, ribs and Oreo cheesecake!"

"With an all-in cost of £75 per person (including water taxi and tip), we expected to feel like we couldn’t wait to return. Instead, we left thinking it was a night to forget; maybe it was an off night for the cook or perhaps they were just having a bad day. Perhaps it’s the end of the season and some have lost interest? Let me start with the positives: the location is excellent. A beautiful autumn sunset and calm waters made for a lovely arrival. The service was decent, and there’s no complaint on that front. However, the meal itself was extremely average. We’re not food snobs, but we could have prepared a better dinner ourselves at home. The crispy squid was anything but crispy, and the scallops, priced at £5 each, lost their delicate flavor. As for the plaice, it was hardly legal catch size and may have even fallen under the limit. There was barely any meat on each fish, and we struggled to peel it from the bone. Moreover, the plate was overloaded with unnecessary garnish, which only added to the disappointment. The preparation and presentation felt amateurish and mediocre, as if the dishes were hurriedly thrown together. We would have been better off at Rockfish or Neil’s in Sidmouth, which would have cost much less and provided far better quality fish. We're genuinely sorry to say that our experience at River Exe Restaurant was not enjoyable. We’re not the type to complain for the sake of it, but had we been dining alone and not with friends, we might have even sent our main course back. We can only hope this was an off night for them and that better experiences await others. However, we certainly won’t be rushing back, even if someone else is footing the bill."

"Booked this place for 8 people to celebrate a Graduation. Off to a bad start, no-one greeting guests at arrival and was left standing for at least 5 minutes before a waitress who seemed to have an attitude finally showed us to our table. Service was ok to start with taking drinks and main meal orders reasonably promptly. However when the drinks arrive there was an extra drink that no-one had ordered. The main courses then arrived in dribs and drabs with at least 10minutes(possibly longer) between the first dish arriving and the last one, by which time the fist dishes had cooled noticeably. Food was ok but nothing special. Make sure you check the menu and prices before you go as the costs can quickly escalate. Also we had one guest who likes to enjoy their food and takes their time eating it. This didn 't stop the staff clearing the rest of the table leave this one individual still eating, felt completely inappropriate and a clear sign to get a move on. Ordered desert which again was ok but nothing special. Then the fun of trying to get the bill and pay for it. Our original waitress seemed to have disappeared and finally managed to attract a member of staffs attention from the opposite side of the room. Asked for the bill and eventually someone came over with the bill then walked away. I assumed that they were away getting the payment reader but no. Had to finally flag down the Manager and asked to pay. He did return with the card reader at least. Spoke to the Manager on the way out and expressed our huge disappointment and clearly stated that this would be our FIRST AND LAST TIME . He offered an apology but by that time just wanted to get out of the place. No I would not recommend this place!"

"Well what a culinary treat we had in store this week as for my wife 's birthday we decided to do the big 'Simon Rogan double header ' of Mr Coopers for lunch on Tuesday, followed by the French on Wednesday. There 's no way you could compare these 2 restaurants as the experiences are like chalk and cheese, but throughout both visits the service was exceptional, the food fantastic and the overall agreement that we in Manchester are lucky to have these 2 relatively new kids on the block. Mr Coopers food is Modern British, with the emphasis being based on good seasonal and local ingredients where possible, all served up in a setting that was grand but relaxed, classy yet informal and a menu with so much variety that it will keep us coming back time and time again. I went for the 3 course set lunch menu £19.00 while my wife went off map by choosing from the a la carte selection although we do tend to share a lot between each others plates which was also reasonably priced. Between us we ate the starters of homemade corn bread with chicken livers and the crispy pork belly followed by mains of spiced monkfish with spinach and mash and a rib steak with truffle pudding that was simply divine. Now I love my food but I know my limitations so won 't be trying to come up with some sort of faux food critic description of each dish. All I 'll say is that the food was damn good! In fact I 'll say it was so good that you should bookmark Mr Coopers now and make it your next port of call if you haven 't been. We finished all this off with a slice of seasonal pumpkin pie and a couple of espressos. With the mains my wife had a cocktail of take me back to the summertime which was very refreshing and I had a pint of the Tatton Blonde which I 'm led to believe is the only place in the world to have it on tap Which brings me on to the beers. Now you 'll see that I 've given Mr Coopers 4 out of 5 and while I thought it was excellent, I can 't bring myself to award it 5 stars while the elephant in the room is still here. The beer selection is absolutely dreadful and fully seems to be blind to the fact that we 're in the middle of a craft beer revolution in the UK at the moment. Where is the Thornbridge, Red Willow and Marble? all fairly local breweries which would tie in really well with the concept of Mr Coopers, but instead the selection is reminiscent of a night down Deansgate Locks shudder... lager, lager, in fact make that **** lager and having a lunchtime Desperados with my perfectly cooked monkfish wasn 't exactly high on the agenda for me. But I 'm sure that they 're aware of this... and maybe the Midland is tied into a contract to stock these beers for a little longer... maybe...hopefully... Overall you 're talking £60 including service for all this at lunch time I would say money well spent. We 'll be back very soon now just sort out those beers!"
