"This is a desperately disappointing place. Only can I assume benefitting from its fabulous world class location. I managed to book a last minute dinner for my wife and one of my sons by 'phone as the online site I tried said full (a good sign . However when we arrived on a glorious evening, the place was half empty (a bad sign . Nice waiter with a personality, but super slowwwww service despite probably being 50% full. Out of the dishes we wanted to try two were not available (which was probably a blessing , so opted for the beer batter cod. Oh dear or dear, what a mistake. Over cooked with a shell as hard a conch shell, dry and chewy. When my dish finally arrived it was accompanied by what can only be described as oven chips (whether actual or not and a dried out green putty concoction that resembled the texture of a pebble dash wall (peas? .. And served in one of those really nasty wire baskets that you get a chain restaurant on a retail park come on team, you eat with your eyes and senses! And certainly not up to the bill total with a meal more in keeping with one of those mid market joints. My family have lived by the coast and know first hand what fresh cod/haddock tastes like. Even the local Turkish chippie here in East Dulwich serves up amazing fish and chips from possibly frozen so no excuses here I 'm afraid. What really grated was instance of the members of the kitchen and waiting team enthralled in a loud deep droning conversation to station themselve on the railings just up from our outside table, clearly more interested in chit chat than looking after customers or serving up a half decent meal. And blotting out the beautiful full moon to boot! This is my second try here in 18 months after a less than impressed visit with a bunch of friends a while ago, leaving the feeling then that we were mildly ripped off for second rate food, but I wanted to give the place another go! The rest of the family were ok with their burger and chips mass market menu and salad type meal, but none opted for pud, so a clear sign that we 'd had enough. My overall summary would be, that this restaurant is a real opportunity missed, poorly managed or run by a team that just don 't care enough. As the location is to die for. It needs some serious mystery shopping to get the food up to scratch, and sharpen the service to bring it up anywhere to the standard or reputation it once had... Needless to say I 've scratched it off the family and client list. A real shame"

"As we ventured into San Carlos in Birmingham for a delightful family birthday lunch, the atmosphere was alive with anticipation. The restaurant 's elegant yet comfortable setting was the perfect stage for our midday culinary adventure. The lunch was headlined by the 'pizza of wonder ', an extraordinary creation that reimagined the classic pizza. With its impeccably charred crust and a medley of exquisite toppings, each bite was a symphony of flavours, making it much more than just a pizza it was a celebration of gastronomic artistry. Next came the rib eye steak, which was the epitome of 'melt in the mouth '. Cooked to perfection, it was a tender, flavour packed delight that tantalised our taste buds. It wasn 't just a dish; it was an ode to the sublime joys of well prepared meat. The lasagne, staying true to its Italian heritage, was a culinary masterpiece. Its layers of al dente pasta, rich ragu, and silky bechamel sauce combined to create a dish that was both comforting and sophisticated. This lasagne was a charming mix of rustic and refined, capturing the essence of Italian comfort food. Then there was the chicken in white wine sauce, an absolute sensation. The chicken, tender and succulent, was bathed in a heavenly sauce that was both light and richly flavoured. It was a dish that showcased the perfect balance of ingredients, each mouthful a testament to the chef 's skill in harnessing and elevating simple flavours to create something truly memorable. Amidst this feast, the staff of San Carlos were the unsung heroes. Their attentive and genuine service added a layer of warmth to the dining experience, making us feel both valued and well looked after. The meal culminated with a Tiramisu that was a dream come true for the connoisseurs among us. It was an impeccable mix of coffee, mascarpone, and cocoa, a dessert that spoke of Italian elegance and indulgence. In summary, San Carlos in Birmingham is more than just a restaurant; it’s a midday retreat into the world of fine Italian dining. From the mesmerising pizza to the sensational chicken in white wine sauce, and the unrivalled Tiramisu, each dish is a testament to the beauty and depth of Italian cuisine. For a memorable lunch experience, San Carlos is a beacon of culinary excellence."

"Worst things first: I think the service could have been a bit better as the waiters weren't so attentive. It was quite difficult to get their attention. Also I asked for lukewarm water as my wife was ill and we were still served chilled water. I asked for the bill to come with the card reader as we were in a rush and the bill still came alone and we had to ask for the card reader again. Other than this the ambience is really really nice. You get a nice view of Canary wharf and although the pillars block the view a bit, I guess those are required to hold the building up haha so it is what it is. Really nice view which every table can appreciate, beautiful interior design my wife referred to it as having a homely feel. I would definitely come back during the day as Im sure it would like marvellous with the sun coming through the full length windows how much better at sunset!! The food was exquisite too. I had eaten beforehand so didn't eat much: just squid rings and the bread selections. Its small but it goes a long way when restaurants heat up the butter so its soft and spreadable on nice warm and soft bread. The squid rings were good too, not too rubbery like many are these days. My wife had a bit more: the cod on mash with caviar (or just roe, not sure) and fries. The fries were so so nice, perfectly salted and fried. The cod and mash was DIVINEEE. Every bite that I stole from her was eye shut inducing. Perfectly cooked cod that tasted like it came from the sea that very morning, one of the creamiest mashed potatoes I've had in a while and then the caviar/roe to add a certain texture to the after taste. Superb. Excellent restaurant, would definitely recommend and not too bad a price as well considering the high class interior and prime location in Canary Wharf."
