"For many years Balans has always been my go to restaurant in Soho one could always be guaranteed of a good standard of just nice food. In all the years I have been going here (and that has been since they opened their restaurant in Soho) I have never had a bad meal or anything other than great service. Well last night I was rather disappointed to start the service was dreadful. The restaurant was by no means full and only had 3 waiting staff this included what could have been a manager (however this was not clear). We asked the waiter if the calamari starter was done in batter, but he did not know what better was so we had to explain to him we ordered the beetroot tacos and Truffle chicken for starters we got the calamari and chicken we let this go as at this point we did not really mind. The chicken was ok but definitely did not have a taste of truffle because it was doused in honey making it rather sweet. When the starters were served they brought the main course with at the same time when we specifically asked for these to be brought separately. After the starter the main course came again, fish n chips and a Balans burger both old Balans favourites the burger my friend had was good but the fish n chips was clearly not fresh and just a reheated old plate of food it even looked awful (see pic attached) I could have gone to poppies across the road for a better Fish n chips the mushy peas had got a dry ‘skin’ on the top of it. The waiter who was clearly flustered called the ‘manager’ who brought another plate of fish n chips that did not look much better than the one before the chips were visibly soggy to which she said, it’s probably the oil they are using in the kitchen (shouldn’t they be using beef dripping) I ended up not having a main course in the end. Another meal was offered but by this time my friend had almost finished his burger so opted to have nothing instead. I understand that sometimes things go wrong in a restaurant and that this was the first time in many visits to Balans that things went wrong however for it to go spectacularly wrong like this indicates to me that Balans has lost its charm the restaurant was about 60% full not really busy at all when we left and passed Comptons Brasserie it was packed (inside and out) to the rafters and there was a buzz in the restaurant something that clearly lacking in Balans last night. I will probably be back again some time but Balans would not be my first choice in Soho again!"

"Exceptional service and food! We booked The Vine for a Hen Party on Saturday 29th July for 32 people .Upon prior to everyone arriving I went down to The Vine to set up the tables etc ,I was greeted by Megan who showed me to the restaurant to see if I liked the way that had set it up , it was absolutely fine I just asked for a couple of adjustments nothing major just the tables to be a little bit more closer together, which she said was absolutely no problem. When everyone started to arrive we were greeted straight away with friendly faces who couldn’t do enough for us . The food was second to none, this came out altogether and was piping hot , it was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes were really generous too. As it was for a large party we did pre ordered our food , from a 2 course set menu the restaurant had designed for us , which had plenty of choice for Starters , Mains and Deserts , that suited both meat and plant based options (This is what we asked for) A couple of people in the party are really fussy eaters but they didn’t complain about it and accommodated us accordingly. All in all the service, food and the decor was just amazing , and a credit to Davood and his team for making the Bride to Be’s day amazing .The cocktails were also amazing We will definitely return , maybe not such as a large group next time."

"Despite the best efforts of the staff at both the bar and at the table, the manager made this my single worst experience at any restaurant not just in Rochester, nor Kent nor the rest of the UK, in fact the only time I have had treatment that neared this was in a back street restaurant in the Costa Brava where the manager detested the English! Where do we begin? On arrival the manager asked us quite reasonably to wait a couple of minutes whilst tables were prepared, so we purchased some drinks and 10 mins later were escorted to our table, not in the main part of the restaurant but in the bar area. Unusually for an establishment that served food and despite laying the table for the correct number of people, the only menus on the table were for drinks we had to find menus ourselves and ended up with the bar staff finding some for us. Eventually, probably as an afterthought the manager came over and took our orders. For a restaurant that advertises Burgers, Steaks and Ribs as it 's headline items to be told they had no Burgers (well he actually said meat) at lunchtime seemed somewhat odd and the attitude shown was awful perhaps attending a table immediately after having a loud argument over a mobile phone in the middle of the bar was not his brightest move. The starters arrived 15 20 minutes later which was bearable. However, after finishing the starters the wait for main courses was ridiculous it took 20 minutes to clear the table after the starters and then we waited.... and waited... and waited. After another half hour waiting and without sight of any staff we managed to catch the attention of someone and asked what had happened to the main courses it then took a further 20 minutes for the food to arrive They must have run out of potatos as well, as ALL the meals arrived with sweet potato fries. Believe it or not a restaurant is a SERVICE provider and to head the business paying absolutely no attention to customers is no service whatsoever. To add insult to injury when my daughter complained about the service she was greeted with an aggressive response by the manager saying What did you expect? It is the same wherever you go as it 's festival weekend Well, for his education, I must state that there were only two other tables of clients that arrived in the time we were there (one table actually left after waiting half an hour to be attended) Furthermore, we have been attending the festival for more years than I can remember and despite often having some delays in service, NONE have ever come near to this for completely ignoring customers, being unprepared and treating people like an inconvenience rather than clients. Okay so £150.00 may not be much in the overall scheme of things but for our part there won 't be a penny more spent in this establishment by any of us and if anyone reading this has any sense I suggest they do the same. To the bar staff and young man that eventually came round and did his best to resolve our problems thank you, your efforts were appreciated, unlike those of the person who really should have been setting an example."
