"Out and about on a lunchtime constitutional along Portobello Road last week something interesting caught my eye. Set back from the road, hiding behind vintage clothes in the arcade, was an alluringly attractive Italian restaurant. On my own, without reading material and in a hurry to get back to work, I had no intention of sitting down to eat but I was compelled to go in and investigate. I glanced at the menu and clientele, was charmed by the decor of hanging dried meat and flowers, and decided I would return imminently.<br/ <br/ Thankfully an opportunity arose this week. I had taken it upon myself to arrange a lunch for myself and nine colleagues, and presented them with an option of four restaurants (secretly hoping that democracy would work in my favour). At first, take-up was slow as the more adventurous-sounding alternatives were far more popular, but risk aversion gradually set in and the simple Italian became the winner; a culinary hare and tortoise situation, if you will.<br/ <br/ “What if they don’t cater for big groups? What if it’s awful and I’m forever ridiculed for my restaurant choice?” Such questions were running through my mind, distracting me from my morning tasks.<br/ <br/ An amiable Italian gentleman saw the first sub-group and exclaimed “group of ten, this way please!” so we followed orders and went inside to our long table, immediately looking above us at the conservatory style ceiling and feeling as though we had walked into a Tuscan summer.<br/ <br/ Our charismatic waitress brought over an alternative to a complementary bread basket; a plate of amuse-bouche sized pieces of courgette frittata served on a forest of rocket. I was very impressed by this. They have foreseen that I’m going to be ravenous, having not eaten since my 11:00 AM apple; that I may not wish to bloat up on bread; that I enjoy being surprised, which I most certainly was. I had only been there ten short minutes and these people already knew how to please me more than some people who have known me for decades. If that isn’t customer service, I really don’t know what is. <br/ <br/ The menu is slightly unusual in that there isn’t the usual long list of pizzas and pastas to choose from, instead there were a couple of al forno dishes (baked in the oven), several paninis (with pizza bread), and a list of specials, a few of which were mains. I took from this that a decision had been made to offer a limited number of dishes, but to do them well.<br/ <br/ I had top-notch, considerably portioned gnocchi with bolognese sauce for £11.50, served whilst the tomato sauce was still bubbling from the oven, with fresh basil scattered on top.<br/ <br/ To make the experience even more superior, they should consider investing in a second credit card machine to take two payments simultaneously since this was a bit slow.<br/ <br/ I was really fond of this restaurant and highly recommend it. Now I just need to think up another reason to go back next week.."

"Booked in here for Tuesday 24th April evening when the weather was rubbish and I had the holiday blues so didn 't want to cook and the added bonus of a Groupon voucher to use also swayed my decision. Parking isn 't great to start with and I 'd guiltily parked outside someones house down from the cinema entrance : We entered for them to address us quizzically and claim that even though I 'd called earlier to book us in with my Groupon voucher reference they had nothing in the diary.. We were seated anyway at a very small table squashed right up at the back we had to 'bump ' passed 3 other tables which I found quite rude to the people sat down. We had no sooner got our coats off picked the menu up then we were pounced on to take our drink order efficient maybe or just a bit too eager? We ordered a bottle of red wine anyway not the house which I thought was a bit steep for a basic wine! and it was brought quick as a flash they then expected us to be ready to order we had only been in the place 8 minutes! The waitress was sent back to us and we ordered the meat antipasti to start, followed by the Gnocchi for me Lasagna for the Mr. We were brought a bread basket when the wine was produced however the butter given was solid clearly not to be used! The bread was nice and fresh though. Again, i didn 't even get a sip of my wine before the food was placed in front of us had it been pre prepared sat waiting to be ordered? The starter platter was to feature ' A selection of Italian meats and cheeses served with artichokes, olives and homemade bread ' the only bread we had was from the initial bread basket and I wouldn 't call 2 olives a selection! The meat was good quality but we felt a tad disappointed overall. We then had to wait 15 minutes for our main! My Gnocchi was nice, if a little bit bland, so I needed to be a bit over generous with the seasoning myself it lacked a bit of bite to be honest but the portion size was good. My Mr didn 't have may complaints for the Lasagna other than it could do with a bit more meat! maybe just a man thing! While we were eating, the close proximity of the tables to each other caused a few 'moments ' with the waiters a full portion of chips lost down the back of a diners chair and a bottle of beer knocked off the table when his bum stuck out a bit much in squeezing passed! Not really what I want to watch when having my dinner. We asked for the bill and sat for nearly 10 mins before I got up and went to the counter to ask again they were in no rush to get it paid either so we took the bill to the counter and paid there. I can see a lot of people are impressed with this place and go back on a regular basis I 'm not won over after this visit however. the tables are too close together the service is either too eager or too laid back where is the happy medium the beer wine list is a bit pricey the menu descriptions are a bit over zealous or they need to actually deliver on the description the food lacked seasoning. From when I observed during our meal, they are not short of business and do a good student trade. I 'm not sure for the 'professional ' couple however they have the right service/food/price quality balance I would be looking for to go regularly."

"Booked for New Year's Eve. per head. Service adequate but I have to say the food was not good. Pre prepared and not fresh. The amuse bouche was a piece of French bread with smoke salmon, more like a badly done canape. The Starters were accompanied by limp salad, the plates they were served on very cold evidencing they had just been sitting uncovered in a fridge. Very odd rock hard goat's cheese, and for others, tiny pieces of dry sardine. As for the main, beef wellington, the fillet of beef overcooked and resembled a piece of shoe leather, I doubted it was even fillet. The pastry was raw on the inside and undercooked, and soggy on the outside. Think had been pre cooked and microwaved. Worst beef wellington I have ever seen. We all sent back and chef offered rack of lamb.Sadly this was presented raw, not rare, with huge chunks of broccoli, soggy roast potatoes and carrots. Those who ate fish said was adequate, but the spinach and ricotta filo main had by one was also raw and underdone. As for the apple tart, again some received ice cold from the fridge, others luke warm although the flavour was good. Actually spoilt New Year's Eve and we left hungry. What was even more annoying is that I believe we were not charged for bottles of wine, but were expected to pay for the nasty food. I would rather have paid for the wine. I will be contacting the restaurant owner for a full refund, minus the wine. I can't believe we were actually charged a head for the meal, pretty disgraceful in my opinion. We actually doubted whether there was a chef in the kitchen."
