"this is somewhere I've wanted to try for a long time, but as my husband doesn't eat seafood, for a long time there wasn't a lot on the menu that appealed. More recently, there has been more chicken, beef, veggie and vegan options, all of which he enjoys, so we decided this time we were giving it a go. it opens at 12, and we arrived more or less on the dot there. the decor is quirky and cosy, and very comfortable. loved the skull mirrorball in the bar alcove. we were easily able to get a table, but for the time of day on an off peak weekday, it soon got busier. it seems very popular. we were able to order quickly. and didn't have to wait too long for our food. I had the Gumbo, which is a favourite of mine, but not available as widely as you'd hope in many UK eateries. (I do make a very good one myself, but can't resist it) the portion was generous, with a good sized side of delicious rice and beans, which had a lovely spiciness to it, and a lovely, light almost brioche like cornbread, delicious for dipping in the rich, flavourful sauce. the gumbo comes with plenty of tender chicken, spiced sausage and king prawns. the flavours were lovely. not overly hot (not that I mind a hot gumbo) but had a lovely rich depth to the sauce, with all the different flavours mingling beautifully. fortunately, as I don't have the biggest appetite, they were happy to provide me with a container to take my leftovers home in, as it would be a tragedy to let it go to waste. I only have a smaller appetite, despite how much I LOVE food, so this way I get two fantastic meals out of it instead of just one. staff were very accommodating, the house lager was decent, and my husbands burger looked really nice too. on future visits I'd love to try out some of the cocktails, but it was a little early in the day for that sort of thing for me. great atmosphere. fun decor. delicious food. quick and accommodating service. can't fault it. the prices tend to be a little higher than we would normally pay on a meal out, but you definitely get your moneys worth, so it's perfect as a bit of a special treat. the only downside I can see is that it is up a stone staircase, so will not be accessible to everyone. but for those that can visit, it's definitely worth it. part of me wants to work my way through the entire seafood menu, and part of me wants to just keep going back for that delicious gumbo."

"Dinner at one of Rick Stein 's establishments in Padstow was mean to be the highlight of our weekend in Cornwall to celebrate my husband 's birthday. It did not turn out like that. I could not get a table at any of the other restaurants so had to go with the St. Petrock 's Bistro but luckily dogs are allowed in there which is great. If you are renting a cottage, you are not allowed to leave your dog there alone and so we were grateful that we could have our dog with us. But....we were seated in a quiet but completely airless room (it was a very warm day and early evening). Ok, we could have accepted that but it was about to get a lot worse. The table was sticky (so not clean), the chairs we were seated in too low for comfortable eating and the menu looked like a fast food diner menu! What was going on. The very young staff members were trying to be helpful but amateurish. We asked if the whole bream was wild. Oh yes, I think so, was the reply. We asked the waitress to check. The fish was farmed. Surely the staff should know that ? We are fish lovers and eaters, having fish at least 3 times a week at home. But Rick Stein is the king of fish, right? Well no. Nothing on the menu was at all different or unusual or surprising. What was surprising were the prices. My husband was forced (because there was nothing else appealing) to have the lemon sole a dish that Stein is well known for. The price was £37.00. Now I buy my fish from a reputable retail fish supplier for £12 per fish. How and why is it necessary for there to be a 200 profit made on this meal just because we are eating at Rick Stein 's? By the way, I read in The Times yesterday that buyers were furious at being charged £2 per pot for take away condiments like tartar sauce etc. at one of Stein 's fish and chip establishments. It seems greed has taken over big time. Anyway, we ordered this and were not surprised when said fish arrived it was small, grayish and overcooked. By the way, no vegetables were served with this fish for £37.00 those were extra! Of course! I was not hungry by this point so ordered the smoked salmon starter for £15. This was ok, not a very large portion (perhaps 30 grams) but adequate but I can get 200 grams of smoked salmon from my retail supplier for the same price and I am quite sure Rick Stein would not pay that price so again, huge profiteering going on. We had a carafe of wine as it was, after all, my husband 's birthday! We ate quickly, eager to be gone from the dingy, overheated room and worse than mediocre food and service. We paid a fortune for an extremely bad experience and needless to say will never venture back to any of the Rick Stein establishments. I hope you diners of the future fare better."

"we have booked the restaurant for a birthday meal. we arrived with a 90-year-old flyer lady and introduced a wheelchair to bring my nuts into the taxi. at the arrival was a woman who did not visit the hotel, broke out and sat in the NUR wheelchair that belongs to the hotel! (5 star? the doorman was extremely abrupt with my wife when she advised that we were looking for a pre-booked wheelchair. as a result our taxi meter went up and my older mother was disturbed. the service manager gave 10 pounds in the direction of our taxi fees, but in view of the stress caused, I would have thought that a full refund would have been more contemplative. during the booking of the restaurant we asked to sit with a beautiful view. we sat at the table and saw a corridor down. not only that, the hotel is so badly designed that we had to take my mother through a labyrinth of lifts, including a personal only lift to reach our goal not very 5 stars when your disabled? the culinary experience was just as bad. it was very slow, small in portions and eat and drink overpriced for what they receive. I had fish and the next day I had severe illness and diahorrea. I should have reported it to the health inspectors, but I was too weak and could not be disturbed. I'll never be dining again! on the plus side the reception staff were very attentive, but the waiting staff needed to retrain and possibly better speak English. I am sure that the administration will either ignore this review or post its standard response, I am sorry that you visit was not happy, etc. etc. why not act on the kritiken instead of on standard responses. it can show that as a company they activities care! you are not evil star!"
