"Was in jolly Newcastle Upon Tyne for a couple of days to see the sights and listen to the lovely Geordie accent *sigh* Being only a few hours away on the train from Edinburgh it actually makes the perfect long weekend or day trip. We arrived early afternoon and couldn 't check in until 3pm so we decided to pop in somewhere not too far away from our lodgings for a bite to eat. First place we wandered into looked, from the outside, like a lovely, homely family pub but upon entering and viewing the menu we soon discovered this most certainly was not the case...turned out to be a very swish and expensive gastropub full of lots of suits on their 'long business lunches '. Ooft. Upon noticing the fish chips was gonna call for a small bank loan to be taken out we made our excuses and left crimson faced (but it was okay coz they 'didn 't charge us for 'water ' we never asked for! Gee, thanks! *grumble* So off we trotted...only a few hundred or so yards down the street we came across another bar being a bit hesitant this time we were delighted to see a menu for out perusal looked good AND they had a lunchtime offer of a sandwich, chips and a drink for £5.95, woo! In we headed. I hadn 't actually noticed but this was in fact a Greene King pub, living in Glasgow/Scotland means we don 't get such pubs around, mores the pity as coming from East Anglia I am very partial to the odd pint (or 3 of Greene King 's delicious IPA, slurp! As soon as I spotted the GK IPA sign I was tres happy. We both opted for the sandwich deal and I had the hand(as opposed to the not so popular 'foot ' battered fish finger sandwich and the Boy chose the ham hock with chilli piccalilli. Both were delicious but I have to say the Boy won this one his ham hock and chilli piccalilli sandwich was gorgeous! I was more than a tad jealous I must admit. Dang. Still, mine was pretty good and the chips salad were very tasty too. All that washed down with a delicious pint of GK IPA made me one happy camper indeed. (FYI: I don 't DO the camping; I like to be no further than at least 50 feet from a flushing toilet at all times...cue the horrendous festival portaloo flash backs...ARGH! Bar staff here were very friendly and I must admit, it did take me a couple of attempts to completely understand a question he asked me *blush* I came over all Alan Partridge and the 1st time he spoke it was 'just noise '. Oof. Great accent though. Love it. So yep, friendly staff, yummy food and a great pint in a bar that also gives you a cracking view of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, river Tyne and also the Baltic modern art gallery whilst sat in a super comfy sofa great. If ever I am in the NUT again I will for sure pop into this pub again. Why aye man! (sorry ."
