"Recently I attended an event at Wagamama that will change my eating and dining out habits forever. Prior to the event, I had to submit my favourite selections from the Wagamama menu so they could be analaysed by two fantastic foodies. My favourite Wagamama menu items were: #60 Mandarin and Sesame Chicken Salad (marinated chicken with mixed leaves, mandarin, coriander, red and spring onions, mangetout and cashew nuts with a sesame, thai basil and mint dressing, garnished with sesame seeds #48 Wagamama Pad Thai (teppan fried rice noodles in a sweet tamarind sauce with chicken and prawns or fried tofu, egg, beansprouts, leek, red and spring onions, chinese chives, garlic, ginger and chillies, garnished with coriander cress, fresh shallots, peanuts, mint and lime I arrived with 9 other bloggers for a unique experience involving a collaborative effort between their Executive Chef Steve Mangleshot and Channel 4 Taste Expert, Dr. Christy Fergusson. After hearing a short introduction from each of them, we were each treated to an alternative dish from the Wagamama menu. The purpose was to learn about the science behind our favourite ingredients and to analyse our taste buds. I received #37 Chicken Itame. Chef Mangleshot Dr. Fergusson picked up on my citrus preference from my original selection and picked a new dish to create a stronger sensory experience for me. It worked! Dr. Fergusson, who is a Doctor of Psychology, Chartered Psychologist AND Nutritional Therapist, explained to us that only 10% of taste is determined by taste buds, and the other 90% is by smell. She also said that those who prefer chilli tend to be thrill seekers because endorphin levels are raised when eating them. We also learned that certain ingredients can trigger special emotions, memories and moods. This means our food preferences convey insight to our personalities. Whoa!! Perhaps growing up in Florida triggers my citrusy selections on menus now? I was a bit puzzled why Chef Mangleshot guided me to chilli, considering I’m not a big risk taker. However, I did take a pretty big gamble with naming a blog Sunny in London, when let’s face it, the town isn’t known for its tropical climate ; My second entrée, #44 2nd entrée Ginger Chicken Udon. It was delish! I always stick with Pad Thai because I not only love the flavours, but also I try to eat gluten free. Through talking with Chef Mangleshot, I learned that it’s easy to substitute rice and noodles on the Wagamama menu for gluten free meals. I always thought they didn’t have flexibility because everything is so keenly defined by numbers on their menu. Aside from the amazing food, a highlight of my night was talking to the two food stars, Chef Mangleshot Dr. Fergusson. It would be tough to find a chef who loves his profession more than Chef Mangleshot. In our conversation, he said, “For me, it’s about how well we do at Wagamama.” He truly wants people to converse with wait staff to learn alternatives to their favourite entrees, based on the key ingredients in them, and to explore the 60+ other Wagamama menu options. The bloggers who favoured soy sauce, which forms the basis of dishes such as Yaki Soba, tried dishes such as Cha Han. This is Yaki Soba, but with rice. Dr. Fergusson suggested Donburi, because she says people who like saltier soy sauce flavours don’t like bitter dishes. Dr. Fergusson also was a canon of information regarding the science of food. I highly suggest you explore her website to learn more. After my second course, I was really starting to feel like I was part of a Man vs. Food episode, but somehow I found room for the dessert tray! So, I have to ask, Sunny friends…. When you go to Wagamama, do you order their Chicken Katsu Curry? Chef Mangleshot says it’s their most popular selection. If so, maybe you’d consider conversing with them to discover an alternative that might become your new favourite?"

"The experience started off fantastically. Charlie, our table attendant arrived promptly; was super friendly and took our drinks and main course orders quickly. (Giving requested guidance, on request . The four of us were really impressed with our restaurant find (including one very happy vegan . Yay, Wagamamas what a great place. THEN it went downhill faster than a n alpine landslide. We were left sitting at our table with finished main course plates (to be clear, some had efficiently been cleared quickly but not those who had finished after. This was the end of the honeymoon stage. We sat, and we sat and we sat. The restaurant emptied out from buzzing and full to sparse (we are talking 8.30 9.00 pm Bank Holiday Weekend. . Everything we needed required a call out to a (not busy waiter such as water, extra glass of wine; dessert menu. This was the worst bit... on an adjacent table, while we were waiting (forever for someone (maybe the enthusiastic original Charlie? to come and ask us what dessert we wanted sat some members of staff laughing happy (pleased for you eating a meal. Picture the scene. Customers sitting waiting for order for food; staff eating at next table . Most of us humans are kind and know that staff need food too but this timing was unbelievable.... it was like us, on the adjacent table, sitting there, were invisible. So now we have an almost empty restaurant; quite a lot of staff clearing up condiments or eating and us, still sitting there. What a real disappointment. Wagamamas provides delicious food; (I really enjoyed the vegan curry.. thanks chefs you saved the day but the one in Brighton needs some proper management to oversee the service. Really, this is some of the worst, disrespectful service I have received in a very long time. It started so promisingly and ended so disappointingly. PS, I asked a member of staff what went wrong and he told me that because it had gone suddenly quiet, they sent members of staff home so ended up understaffed. Wagamama no wonder you were quiet. Chefs your food is great; Managers get the staff to give the service the food providers deserve. What as waste and what a perfect example of terrible management."

"Never again!! Visited as a group of 4. Asked if we’d been to waga’s before . We all said yes. Was told ‘so you understand the food all comes out at different times’. We did and understood. However, when 3 people order starters and mains and the mains come out before the starters, it didn’t start well. I understand the food coming out in dribs and drabs, but surely the starters should still come out before mains!!? What is the point in having a starters and mains section on the menu!? I didn’t order a starter. I ordered a chicken Katsu curry. 5 minutes after everyone had finished their mains, followed by starters; the server approached me. “What are you missing?” My reply- “a katsu chicken curry”. Server- “Ok, I’ll check with the kitchen now” After checking with the kitchen, she came back over and told me they were very sorry for the delay. The chef was just plating it up. 10 minutes later, it still hadn’t arrived. Another server appeared and took over. The previous server never appeared after. Was told again that the dish was just about to be served, they’re not sure what the problem was but it has been taken off the bill. The curry arrived a few minutes later, 15 mins after everyone else had finished eating their mains……followed by starters. I was appreciative of it being taken off the bill and the servers apology. However, tbh, I probably wouldn’t have eaten or payed for it after it arrived. The chicken was overcooked and cut terribly. Probably half the portion size I have received in previous visits. The sticky rice was dry, and the salad tasted like it should have been thrown away 24 hours previously. Thank goodness we didn’t order dessert. That would have probably arrived before the ramen main course and followed by a dessert of prawn wrapped in seaweed. Nearly £100 later, felt very annoyed. Won’t re-visit"

"I don't, as a rule, like High Street chains. It's very depressing to find yourself in town after town in Britain, all with identical High Streets. It goes something like this: a New Look, WHsmith, Thomas Cook, Boots, MacDonalds, Greggs, Tesco Express on one side, and on the other: Foxtons, a local estate agents, a couple of banks and another three estate agents. And then another estate agent. It's a depressing formula. The idea of course is that diners in an unfamiliar place will find welcome familiarity in the brands that they know. But when those restaurants' (I use the term loosely) are serving rubbish, it just means that people are accepting mediocre as standard. Which brings me to Wagamama. Wagamama are expanding across the country, bringing an informal dining experience to High Streets everywhere. Surely it's a bad thing? Well, this is where I shuffle uneasily and say, well, no. Bring it on.Wagamama are the proof that when the product is good, the service is good, and the pricing good, you can get away with a ubiquitous presence across the country, and be welcomed. Wagamama Norwich is a case in point. When I went in, I was greeted by a waiter who asked where I'd like to sit. He asked if I had been to a Wagamama before (so he didn't have to repeat what I already knew), he offered some recommendations and left me to choose. I was then served by a friendly waitress, who was genuinally friendly and also efficient. Drinks were served by a third waiter. No one had ownership' of my table if any of the staff saw that I needed to be served, they did it. It's brilliant. They all worked together, and there seemed to be a real camaraderie between theme.Although you can, in theory, order a starter, everything is served when it's ready, so you may find that you are tucking into your main course' first, so just tuck in when your food arrives. Servings are generous, very generous. The food is good. It tastes like real food. You can identify flavours and textures, and you come away having just had a real feel good' experience. I had the Chicken Chilli Men, served in a bowl piled high with chicken, courgettes, red onions, peppers, mangetout and spring onions. It has quite a kick if you're not used to chilli (I'm not but was a very warming, filling dish. I had a side order of gyoza, little steamed dumplings of chicken, each stuffed with Chinese chives and water chestnuts. I also shared the negima yakitori skewers of chicken and spring onion, grilled and coated in yakitori sauce. Yum!I can't recommend Wagamama enough. It's perfect as an intoduction to great value Asian cuisine, service is with a genuine smile, and the food you couldn't ask for better for the price."
