"We were in Vitré for the first time and stumbled upon this restaurant by chance during a walk when it was closed between lunch and dinner. The menu looked great, and when we peeked inside, it really looked appealing. I have always had a theory about restaurants in France with the name "Auberge" in them. They are bound to be good and I have never been wrong so far! We decided to go back that night for dinner. We looked on Tripadvisor and did see some negative reviews about a lot of the food most likely being prepared from frozen, but didn't let that stop us. We were early welcomed by one of the owners. I loved the cozy feel of this restaurant. The table was beautifully set and it felt chic and elegant. The owner didn't really know the exact history of the building but as it is right across from the cathedral, it was most likely originally a bourgeois home from the 16th century. We both enjoyed our meal, loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the friendly owners. The food was very good and wonderfully presented. Was some of the food prepared from frozen? Hard to say, but all we knew is that is was quite delicious and it was very good value for money. I'd recommend it and we would certainly return again when in Vitré."

Great value and family run. Even got their family recipe for the delicious fig chuntey they served with the terrine - both home made. Puds were very good too

Le Saint Louis is our favourite restaurant in Vitre and a dinner here is the highlight of our holiday. The owner doubles as maitre d' and waitress and her husband is the chef. The menu is varied and the surroundings unique. I had grilled snails...More

The best part about this restaurant is the couple who run it. They make you feel like honored guests in their home. The food is quite good, great value. We ate lunch outside, looking up at the beautiful south facade of the cathedral, but the interior is warm and cozy. This is the real deal so don't waste your time at one of the tourist sidewalk cafes.

it cool, like sitting in a grand front room, very french, i would recommend it as an experience, the food was ok but not great, scallop starter was 2 or 3 scallops, small but quite fishy.my main had an odd flavoured sauce and the duck tasted very old, not a fresh taste which was a shame as I was looking forward to it.quite expensive for what it is.wont hurry back tbh

This is what I live and travel in France for! The hosts are welcoming and professional yet personally informal. The dining room is comfortable, and is decorated in dark wood and fascinating wallpaper (look up at the ceiling). I had a starter and a main, a glass of wine and a coffee, all for 22 euros. The food is excellent; not fussy, but very fresh and seasoned well. I am looking forward to returning in July.

Friends who live in Brittany took us to Vitres for a visit and lunch. It was a lucky choice that we went to this Auberge opposite the Cathederal. The food was excellent, madame did her utmost to produce the menu we expected and we were not disappointed. I can recommend the Chicken liver starters and the apple pie. The décor is elegant with 18th century Louis XV panelling. The prices were very reasonable. One of best meals of our holiday.

I agree with other reviewers comments on the friendliness of the owners and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant. We were however a little disappointed with the food, it had obviously been cooked in advance and then re- heated. The lamb was quite tough, and for me, the sauce overpowering and my wife's wild boar was tasteless.I really feel sad to have to make these negative comments because the ambiance of the restaurant and it's delightful owners are positive factors.

Across the street from the church in Vitre, France you will find a charming place to dine, the Auberge Saint Louis. The restaurant is housed in a quaint old building with solid wood paneling on all the walls. It is a small dining room, but the chef, his wife and daughter were wonderful hosts. I had a baked brie with salad appetizer, which was lovely, flavored with nuts and figs. I gambled on something wild for the main dish, wild boar, and was not disappointed. It was tender, didn't have a gamey taste and was well-flavored. I loved the potatoes and mushrooms served with it. An original chocolate dessert topped off the meal. Nothing extravagant, but a delightful meal and experience. I would r...

This tiny restaurant is run by a charming couple who extend a warm welcome and give first class service. The building itself is set in the old part of the town in an interesting building of considerable character. The room is VERY French and you almost feel you are in someone's front room. Although there is much dark panelling, the room if far from gloomy and a table for 4 by the window looks out over the street to the cathedral of Vitré.On a fine day one can eat at one of the three or four tables on the pavement, although one is very close to the road.We have eaten there a number of times and on this occasion we chose from the 25 euro menu which offers a choice of three courses. On weekdays...
