"I booked this place in advance. Not because it was recommended, but because it seemed away from touristville and the menu was varied. A 30 min walk through uncharted territory. The blonde lady that met me was very nice, smiley and invited me to sit where I liked. Taking in a nice evening outside, I was then confronted by some sour faced Matriarch who told me to move to another table to make space for a larger party. No apology, no direction where to sit. Had I been transported back to the 70's, and Fawlty towers? Nice lady takes my order, sour Frau throws a salad on my table without looking at me or telling me what it is. She's too preoccupied fawning over her larger party. Nice waitress brings out my steak, perfectly acceptable and what was needed after an incredibly long and tiring day. I ate my food, got the bill from the nice waitress and was on my way. You know, I put a lot of effort into finding the places the locals go to, and all I want to do is blend in. My original intention had been to visit this restaurant several times while here, as there were a good few things on the menu I fancied. But I never went back. Blond waitress was perfectly charming and a credit to the restaurant. The food was acceptable. What's not acceptable is bad manners, verging on deliberate rudeness. I'm paying good money. Don't waft me away from my seat, don't throw salad at me, and don't do your best to feign indifference bordering on contempt.Yeah, this place was memorable, unfortunately for the wrong reasons"

Fast service, food seems to be freshly cooked and no microwave involved. Good choice of dishes, also a good variety of wines. Can get hot inside when busy, which it is often.

We visited this restaurant on a Sunday evening, it was very busy which I show is a good sign! The wait staff was very friendly, was able to provide menus in English! All of our food was delicious and would visit again!!

If you would like to experience the German cuisine and atmosphere, come here. The down to earth atmosphere is unique and all though reaervations are recommended they do have open tables attached to the bar (great architecture) for walk ins and seats at the bar if you were to eat alone, but one could still easily chat with someone. The food is amazingly goodAnd reflects the culture of Freibrurg. It is not smack dap in the middle of the city, but worth the ten minute drive.

This is a very cousy place with original decoration. The quality of the food is top notch, with good quality meat with delicious dressings. Salads were fresh and good tasting, staff was helpful, however we had a little bit of a hard time to understand the menu since menus weren´t in English and staff had limited knowledge of English. This is a place where you can taste a real German dish, while drinking a local beer in a great environment. We went there two nights in a row.

Visited this restaurant having seen trip advisor reviews and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent, really tasty and well presented. Restaurant itself is out of town but easy to get to on the no 1 tram. Downside was the speed, or lack of, service. We waited nearly an hour to get our drinks and even then only one came. We had to ask. There were only 4 ladies working and they were flat out as it was very busy. Not overly friendly but the quality if the food when it came made up for it. Would definitely go again.

The Restaurant Baeren has been a long term fixture of dining in West Freiburg and we've eaten here multiple times in the 20 or so years we have been coming here. Over that time the decor has been gradually updated, although retaining its traditional 'black forrest' feel, but the food has remained constant. They serve a range of local foods, with a mix of meat and fish dishes (as with many German restaurants vegetarians are not especially well catered for), the food is well cooked and generously portioned. Service is friendly and rapid.

We found this restaurant by chance, searching round on the internet for a restaurant close to our hotel. We were not expecting much, but what a fantastic find - a terrific atmosphere, helpful staff and delicious traditional German dishes. We really enjoyed our meal. This restaurant is obviously a favourite with locals - lots of family groups, some celebrating anniversaries. I don't know much German, but I think this restaurant defines the word 'gemütlich'!If you are staying at any of the hotels in Breisgauerstrasse, take a walk across from the tram stop and try Baeren - it is great.

The Baeren is a restaurant in an residential area, a 10 minute tram ride (Linie1) from the town centre of Freiburg. Get off at Betzenhauser Torplatz or Paduaallee. The restaurant is a bit hidden, next to clothing chain Kik.We chose the Tuesday special: Beef liver with fried potatoes (Lebe von Rind mit Braegele) which comes with a generous mixed salad. You can have the liver with or without sauce. The meat was tasty and the potatoes fried to perfection. Also the salad had a very nice dressing. Brilliant value for under 10 Euros. Service was efficiient apart from the tap water we asked for which took a long time to arrive. We were told that free wifi will be available from March. The restaurant...
