"We are regular cafe mauds customers when we are visiting Newcastle. A lady came to serve us and as I started to order ice creams, I was interrupted to be asked brusquely if we were going to be eating lunch. She said that ice cream...is usually just for takeaway. I don’t know why but we did end up ordering a hot drink and mince pie even though we didn’t want that. There are no signs anywhere to suggest you can’t sit in just for ice cream. The worst part was that then the same lady brought ice cream down then seconds later dropped the card machine and said “that’s the payment”... we had barely had a lick of our cones nor had we said how we were going to pay (cash/ card). The whole experience made us feel awkward and put a dampener on our family afternoon. We live in England and regularly visit our local cafe that mainly sells ice cream (and also lunches) and never have had a problem with popping in for a cone on a cold day, especially considering it is a short time we spent there. It was a massive shame to be made to feel foolish and awkward because we are long standing Mauds ice cream fans and also make a point of visiting Cafe mauds in Newcastle when we are visiting. Maybe it would be a good idea to put up some signs up with some rules about sitting in or Front of House making this clear upon seating customers."

Soo many flavours, clean and friendly staff. A most on any hot day, wher the palette needs a little cool factor lol.

I’ve just taken my year old Mum year old auntie in here for a cup of tea. It was the worst service ever. They kept us waiting on a table in a draughty doorway for at least minutes even though they could...see their age and there were tables available! We then waited for another mins on our tea and even then they brought one tea short and not enough milk!!!! Never again!!!!

Staff are very unfriendly, some even rude. Waiting times are ridiculous even when the cafe is not busy. The QR code they provide for the menu gives different information than the physical menu and staff are unwilling to apologise recognise the false bait...advertising they are delivering. When order arrived they used mayo instead of Ballymaloe relish but due to staff being so unapproachable and rude there was no way to get it fixed without further hassle. My friend was brought the wrong panini and by the time it was corrected everyone else has finished.

Was greeted by a guy called Joe on entering cafe. A welcoming, well mannered young guy. We where shown to our table, order was taken and served very quickly. Joe was top of his game, nothing was to much trouble for this guy, had to go back to...counter to see if what we wanted was available but this was no issue for him. My friend and I had tea, apple tart and I had Victoria sponge cake, both where delicious. I found the covid precautions where being carried out in w safe manner, staff masked, track and trace and tables being cleaned. Will definitely be back, thanks Mauds and thanks Joe . Paul Tom

We have been going to Mauds regularly for years. Recently we have been able to get sorbet at the ice cream counter for our daughter who has dairy, egg, nut and fish allergies. Now it is even better they offer plant based ice creams...which our daughter absolutely loves!! The staff are always brilliant as they keep extra of these ice creams away from the main counter especially for allergen sufferers. They also clean the scoop in boiling water before serving. What would get a full star review? Have scoops used only for serving people with allergies and make sure your brilliant staff all know to put on a fresh pair of gloves.

We stood for ages before anyone acknowledged we were even there. Finally seated in a tight corner beside a hand sanitizing station. We were given menus and ignored for at least minutes. Others arriving after us were seated and orders taken as we continued...to wait. Twice we were told someone would be with us shortly. Whilst the cafe was fairly busy, there were several empty tables and plenty of servers working. Overall the standard of service was unacceptable and our wait was too long. Manager would need to ensure staff are seating and serving customers in order of arrival to avoid the chaotic service we witnessed. We gave up and left. We received the service you would expect from another l...

Called in for a coffee and a pork herb sausage roll. While the restaurant wasn’t overly busy, most tables were occupied and no queue at the counter. I placed my order and took my seat. I waited minutes for my sausage roll to...arrive, which was very tasty, however no sign of the coffee. I asked a member of the floor staff as to when I could expect it, to be told there was a queue for the coffee and he didn’t know how long it would be. I told him to cancel it and get me a glass of water…it never appeared. After finishing my food I got a refund for my coffee and left…for good. I won’t be back. There were length of staff working but seemingly little organization. I would hate to see this place...
