"I a middle aged Brit was being guided round Hamburg by my German cousin's daughter and her two friends and I thought I would treat them to a coffee and a snack in somewhere warm it was cold today on the Friday the February and nowhere was open in the park with the Japanese Garden and greenhouses. We left the park so I looked up TA for somewhere to have that snack. I found the local small Fish restaurant at Collonade which proved to be too small, with standing only as there were no tables for the four of us. A TA search locally found nothing german so we just hit the first cheapish place we could see which proved to be Caravela. Walking down the steps into the warm, bright and cafe atmosphere we found a few people snacking. The cheerful counterwoman took our orders for my cappucino, a hot chocolate and two herbal teas. I ordered a couple of small cakes to share. I asked if there were any portugese custard tarts but she said they had sold out unfortunately. The total bill of was paid on the spot which I thought was good value. We sat around a high table and the drinks were produced quickly and were appreciated as hot and tasty. The cakes were tasty too but were not custard tarts, although looked a little like them the woman warned me they were not the same. I thought we could have something savoury so I chose the last tortilla at thinking there may be a portugese twist to this Spanish classic. She warmed it up and served it soon after. It was pretty good, although quite bland as usual needing a bit of seasoning. I noticed above the kitchen area boards displaying snack deals. They looked enticing and very good value. Separate small groups of young portugese popped in so it was obviously popular. Overal it was a cheap place to have a snack on a cold day. Obrigado to our hostess"

Typical portuguese place serving croissants, quiche, toast and a huge variety of homemade portuguese sweets. Cheap, noisy but highly recommended. Just don't try the wine...

Having just arrived from two weeks travelling around Portugal, I somehow missed their sweets, and no other place to quench that desire than the famous Caravela and their many sweet options!

Caravela is a “must” in Hamburg. It is a cozy place that serves the best Patais de Nata, the best hot chocolate and many other delicious snacks. It is a great place to spend half an hour enjoying nice atmosphere and a nice glass of...wine. When I was there as a tourist, I loved this place and now, as a resident, I can’t be more delighted that I get the chance to visit this place even more often

Craving a portuguese style croissant I ended up at Caravela. There are several croissants already prepared, just waiting to be toasted. I found it to be extraordinarily tasty - both crispy croissant and gooey cheese. I had a reasonably priced freshly squeezed orange juice with that and enjoyed it very much. The sweets do also look very tasty, but given the early time of day I skipped them. The interior is not particularly inviting to stay for a longer time, but that's okay. Definitely a place to recommend if you have some time to spend near the Hamburg station - it is only five minutes by foot.

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
