"Every Thursday is sushi night. This is the bible we (who work down the road) live by. Be it rain or shine, snow or an hour long queue, if there is Edamame's sushi on the other side of it, it's worth it. Especially if you love raw fish. First of all, their salmon nigiri comes with a generous fish to rice ratio. This is extremely important. The salmon is also so fresh it has a texture that offers up just enough firmness to sink your teeth into satisfactorily before it melts, almost like butter, in your mouth. Next, the unagi (eel) nigiri, seasoned with a sweet soy paste, is one of their must-have specials. The availability of these specials (unagi nigiri, spicy tuna and more) are made known to diners on flimsy pieces of paper pinned to the wall, and customers who have yet to order sit (and queue) in silent fear of them being taken down... When we go we order (quite frankly) disgusting amounts of sushi, and leave with a stomach so heavy we sometimes take rest on the steps of the Bodleian. Be mindful of their limited opening times and very specialised menus; they typically only open during University term time (because they are just that good). I have heard that their menu for other days are good as well. Disclaimer: No, I was not paid to write this review."

niche market, hours are kind of strange because the campus. eating meets the price point, but unfortunately they ran out of laughs, which somehow got rid of a third of the menu

the only problem is the room. we went to midday and were low on time, so we have the first opportunity when they were able to delete a table for us. two of us shared one table with four others, and it was not really pleasant to eat surrounded by strangers. but it was worth eating. everything was delicious and serving were huge. I will definitely visit again! View menu

to eat home. To be honest, I was very disappointed after my first visit. read reviews online and see the long line patiently waiting patrons built up very high expectations. vegetarian dishes are usually very bland, which is very disappointing. had much better japaner in many different restaurants in and out japan. After said it is one of the very few (decent) Japanese restaurants in oxford, and the service is great, so I go back to late lunch from time to time.

The lunchtime menu is simple, with about eight main choices, some side dishes and a special or two (the evening one is slightly different, and on Thursdays is the much-fted sushi night). A glimpse of the tiny kitchen makes this entirely understandable. As an appetiser we had some kaiso sarada 3: this was a special), a seaweed and cabbage salad with a hot horseradish (I think) dressing. As far as I could tell the seaweed was real, and the contrast of textures, between dry-ish cabbage and rubbery, salty seaweed was quite addictive.

This tiny restaurant in an Oxford backstreet serves the best Japanese food I’ve ever eaten anywhere. It’s a family setup and you are likely to be seated by the owner, then served food by his son that’s fresh off the pan wielded by his wife : Opening hours vary on different days of the week and one night a week is sushi night so no hot food. No reservations are taken so get there early or you’ll be queuing by the door – this isn’t the place for a long leisurely meal but perfect for lunch in town.Food is gorgeous, my favourites are the pork teriyaki and their eponymous edamame, which is much, much better than you’ll get from any of the Japanese chains like Itsu, Wasabi or Wagamama. They also s...

this little restaurant in an Oxford backyard serves the best Japanese food I've ever eaten. it is a family setup and they are likely to sit by the owner, then served food from his son who are freshly driven by the pan by his wife: opening times vary on different days of the week and one night in the week is sushi night, so no hot eating. no reservations are brought there so early or they will remain silent on the door – this is not the place for a long cozy meal, but perfect for lunch in the city. Eating is beautiful, my favorites are the pork terraiyaki and their eminent edamamas, which is much, much better than they get from one of the Japanese chains like itsu, Wasabi or wagamama. they al...

"I've been going to Oxford for 3 years now and in that time to be frank struggled to find a decent go to restaurant. I can now say with delight i've found my destination. I present SPICED ROOTS a little caribbean culinary gem. The fresh perfectly cooked food is absolutely delicious and gives off that home cooked by mummy vibe and is beautifully presented. The chilli and garlic prawns had my eyes closed Mark Weins style (if you know you know) so juicy with an incredible depth of flavour, the Trini doubles not only were seasoned to perfection they left you wanting more and the Jerk chicken spring rolls were an absolute triumph. For mains we had the ackee and callaloo Jerk Tempah (vegetarian) and the Jerk chicken. Both came with rice peas, plaintain and salad. Not only were the portions huge the flavours of both dishes were just mind blowingly delicious. Then we embarked on dessert and had the beautiful spiced rum cake and a selection of 3 home made ice creams namely Coconut, Guinness and the old Caribbean favourite Rum and Raisin, all recommended by the owner. It's at this point I feel compelled to speak about the rum raisin ice cream. I've eaten this ice cream on numerous occasions at numerous locations in Jamaica over my many years and I tell you no word of a lie this was hands down the best rum and raisin ice cream I've ever tasted, it literally left us speechless. So to summarise, this place has great food, great music, great service and a wonderfully charming owner who's totally invested in serving great, incredibly tasty, authentic Caribbean food clearly prepared with love. What more could you ask for. Fair to say it was meant to be. Uncle Jay."
