"A little restaurant on a side street off the main drag, this is a superb German/Austrian restaurant with tasty local cuisine. The restaurant itself is typically understated but the staff accommodated us very well, providing us with English menus and speaking decent English, while putting up with my terrible attempts at speaking German. Unlike many reviews on here, we decided against the schnitzel - albeit looking great but enormous - my girlfriend and I had the goulash and we didn't regret it. Perfectly cooked beef with a deep, rich sauce and a dumpling the size of a small football. It was the best dish we ate in our three days in Berlin. The beer here was also very good and was different from what you got in the more touristy areas of Berlin. Somehow we made room for desert, and they are a treat. We chose the Kaiserschmarrn - shredded pancake strips with a serving of plums - and an apple layered cake dish with vanilla custard. Every mouthful was a joy. The service was fine, a bit slow in places, but the restaurant was full and was being run by just two staff who were very helpful, especially with our limited German language skills. They seemed genuinely surprised by a tip but it was well worth it for the quite brilliant food and ambience of this lovely German side street."

what should I say, the real Austrian schnitzel. huge, hard to finish, but incredibly easy. the place is economical, but the waitresses are very nice and helpful, absolutely encouraged for a typical dinner in berlin!

very nice place (especially on Saturdays, as probably full). we have eaten the best carving of all time, hugely tender with the perfect panade, accompanied by an excellent kartoffel salad. fairer price for the quality and filling the portions.

nice atmosphere, service was sometimes a bit lavish, berlin hold. but was okay. carving with potato salad was sensational and definitiw a ground to come back. the house wine was excellent, forget which brand it was. I think it's almost all right, and at the end, the taste counts.

are they a fan of the warm kitchen? do they have an above-average ability to eat something? they are at the right place. we ordered knödel, wiener schnitzel with potato-gurken salad, sourkraut salad, bratkartoffeln; a portion of imperial bull. What do you want me to say? an explosive evening meal, at whose end the same waiter made us a compliment: the white carving was endless (although thinner and dryer than that they eat in the Austrian capital) and required two medium beers to be honored. that also helped us to feel heroic at our lush dinner. unfriendly service, karge environment and no light billing: nevertheless it is worth an evening! but... they're hungry!

for years I have ignored the old, under the assumption "only another overpriced restaurant in the gentriified bötzowviertel". but you should judge correctly only if you really tried a restaurant - and I did that now. I am not quite sure whether there is the best carving in berlin here (there is a competition with the platzhirschen in the French street), but one of the two best ones is certain. also highly recommended: imiserschmarrn - the portion reaches as a main dish for the small hunger. also extremely friendly service - no problem to also order a smaller carving or take the rest after the big one has not been enough to house. quite elevated price levels, but not too expensive for the req...

My husband and I hadn't decided yet whether to eat at Alt Wien or just have drinks. We went in to have a look around and immediately got told that we'd have to sit outside as everything was booked up. (we weren't asked if we only wanted drinks or eat as well). We decided to have drinks outside. To be fair, the menus came briskly and after our beers arrived we were asked if everything was ok. Our beers were good and after they had been empty for quite a while no-one came who we could have asked about the bill. We decided to go inside to pay. That was when the lady behind the bar told me matter-of-factly that she didn't have the €0.10 so decided not to give it to me. Normally, I would never in...
