"I've rated this Inn as very good, as it offered quaint accommodation and good food at a reasonable price. The double room we occupied was spotlessly clean, had a brand new shower and bathroom and a small table and two chairs, It was a bit basic and possibly not to everyone's taste, as the décor was a bit dated. However we were warmly welcomed despite our phrase-book-only German and enjoyed a meal in the bar of Schnitzel and fries. I expect that it would be even more popular once the season gets going and the shaded garden area was open for drinks or meals. As it was the Inn was just about fully booked as some diners were turned away. Overall a great little place as a base for southern Germany or Northern Switzerland."

Das Essen war ausgezeichnet und die Bedienung freundlich und schnell obwohl das Lokal sehr gut besucht war. Das Preis/Leistungsverhältnis stimmt ..mein Fazit ..muss ich unbedingt wieder hin.

Traditional style restaurant with tasty food. We liked the original atmosphere. We will come again. Personnel was a little rough - which we consider typical for the region - therefore part of the atmosphere. View menu

We selected this restaurant based on previous positive reviews on tripadvisor.Indeed we discovered a nice traditional, family runned, restaurant in a small German City close to French & Swiss borderThe food was really tasty and authentic. A good place to be recommended for a simple but pleasant dinner.

It is always a pleasure to arrive at Zum alten Salzfass after a long ride in the car. Knowing that there is a friendly family, a nice clean room and good food waiting for us. The family Hell is busy redecorating the rooms, one after the other. Although the rooms were nice to me, we were located in a 'new' room. And I must say, they did a very good job. The small bathroom is more efficient with high quality equipment. And everything in the room looked tasteful.Thank you family Hell for being so kind and hospitable. View menu

We stayed in Zum alten Salzfass many times traveling to and from Italy. It is always a pleasure to arrive there. The family Hell are very friendly people. The rooms are nice decorated and spotless clean. The bathrooms are rather small but comfortable. Breakfast is very rich, with good coffee, bread, cheese, meat, boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, cereals, fresh juices. The typical German dishes in the restaurant are of very good quality. Only a bit too much for me. I never managed to finish my dish. This is absolutely a hotel to come back over and over again.

When traveling between Belgium and Italy, we had a stop-over here in both directions.Very good food in good quantity. Attentive and friendly service.Very close to the German - Swiss border where you can pass early enough in the next morning to avoid long queues. The restaurant has also some rooms that are perfect enough for one night when travelling many kilometers: good bed, small bathroom but very well equipped, very good value for money.Minus points: - as already mentioned by another reviewer, need to pay in cash; no credit cards; - no breakfast before 07:30 am, what can be a problem if the next day is very long.

"After eating with my wife, we have a mixed opinion on our evening. Indeed, we begin by discovering the very attractive map, although little rich in choice of "health context". A very interesting menu of 4 dishes, however the main dish no longer attracts us, we ask to replace it with a different dish displayed at the same pace (according to the map.) " Impossible" according to the waitress. Feeling the drop of comments I want to specify that we discovered later in view of the neighbor plates that the quantity is exactly the same as on the map or on the menu. The flavours are at the rendezvous, the quantities are largely sufficient although identical to the menus, but let’s be frank, no explosions of flavours or oral orgasms. (Chacun will make its idea A perfect dessert, special mention on this point! In the end, a fairly mixed opinion because due to the addition we feel aggrieved by our choice to the paid card about 20 euros more than on the menu with a less entry for (if you please remember the same amount. Verified because everyone took the entries and dishes of the very professional service menu despite the answer "I don't know how to describe it to you" to the question, how is dessert. In the end, a contrasting experience between the high-end not actually mastered and a well calculated addition. As if the experience was “survived” by the parents (of course a good part of the frustration generated Right to try without hesitation, but to the appreciation of all the “returns” of the constructive and non-destructive advice:"

"This was our second visit to this restaurant. On the first visit, about three years ago, we were not overwhelmed but our recent meal was well below standard for a restaurant of this standing. The amuse bouche consisted of one "mini Hamburger" per person plus a bowl of a tzatziki style mixture with two bread fingers per person for dipping. As regards starters: the foie gras (generous portion) was served rather inelegantly with a large brioche bun and the terrine joue de boeuf was clearly made from a very aged animal with some rather tough artichoke leaves. It was probably the worst terrine I have ever eaten. The filet de cerf main course was badly let down by the vegetables- the chestnuts and pear were hard and the red cabbage was unpleasantly salty. The Simmental beef filet was of mediocre quality and served well-done not medium as requested. The poached pear desert desert was served in half quantity as part of the menu- that is, half a pear and a smaller slice of (very indifferent) ice-cream. Three members of the party were eating from a (46€) menu and had the smaller portion and a fourth had a whole pear. This is what I would describe as mean cuisine. The crème brulée was good. The service was generally good although la patronne was somewhat brusque and, after the host had ordered red wine, turned to the table and asked generally if anybody wanted some white wine!"
