"I am at a loss for words and do not know where to begin. The experience at this restaurant was incredibly bad. The food was of very poor quality, to the point of being really terrible. (The cheese flavor was decent, but it was not made in-house so it doesn't really count. It could have easily been purchased from the market). The dishes were poorly prepared and poorly presented. I can't understand how other reviewers could rate it any higher based on the quality of the food. What was even worse was the owner shouting at and mistreating other customers. He was decent towards us, but it created a very uncomfortable atmosphere. I was desperate to leave and have no intention of ever returning."

Love Gary and Geoff, lovely scones, excellent tea, and a good catch up. A must if you are in Richmond….I have shared an amazing beetroot soup with Gary…if you are lucky you might just get it!

Fabulous scone with generous slice of cheese. Proper tea leaf tea filter coffee on 'tap '. Good chat with owner who is very knowledgeable. We couldn 't stay long but i returned an hour later for his turkey stuffing pie (delicious) some cheeses to take home. Thankyou

Definitely unique, but incredibly friendly and eager to please. The soup we ordered was delicious and we enjoyed the treat of having leaf tea. Having scones on the table was a nice touch, but it would be better if they were covered. We had a lovely conversation with the owner, who did a great job engaging with our entire family.

The guy that runs this cafe is just so rude, if you were to go in and not buy anything he wants to know why? Too the point he ran out of the shop to confront us and ask why we didn’t stay in his shop….imagine going into Curry’s just to look and the sales assistant running after you in the car park to ask why you never bought anything. Well that’s what happened here…..

We popped in for a tea and the owner immediately started making derogatory jokes about Liverpudlians. Being a scouser, I know how to enjoy a bit of banter, but this guy was nasty and offensive. He called us theives several times and told my partner to take his pants off and bend over! We left before he served the tea because we didn't want to give money to a bigot. Avoid this place if you're from the North West.

Stumbled across theis little gem on lunchtime and so glad we did. It was frequented mostly by locals which is always a good sign. The owner was so friendly, talking to us about where to visit nearby and good walks etc. We felt like we were sat in his kitchen. We had spiced vegetable soup which was probably the best soup I've ever had. The tea if proper tea and the service is honest, enjoyable and with a side order of banter. A cracking find.

Stumbled across this little gem last year when visiting Richmond and had to come back. Visited today with the wife and our 2 year old. Lovely, freshly cooked bacon butty and fresh cheese scone with a generous slab of cheese. Filter coffee only but on tap so no complaints from me! Our little man didn't get frowned upon when he jumped down from the table to do a couple of laps of it. If you want a frothy coffee with hazelnut syrup, served alongside a factory-made almond croissant then stick to Costa. If you want a warm, Yorkshire welcome and a good, straight up, home-made belly full then this is for you. We will definitely be back. Thanks Gary

I hesitated to enter, but decided to seek shelter from the rain. Despite there being seats by the window, we were asked to sit at the only table in the restaurant, next to another customer who was being loudly talked at by the owner. We ordered coffee and scones, which were picked up with bare hands from the uncovered table. The scones, although not fresh, were edible. The owner continued to shout as we ate, and I tried to make conversation with another customer but was constantly interrupted. It was a strange experience and not the warm welcome I expected as a Yorkshire native. I know what to expect from Yorkshire hospitality, and this was not it. I will not be returning.

What a strange, awful experience. My gut instinct was initially a ' 'no ' ' but we agreed to give this cafe a try given its high TripAdvisor rating. I have no idea how it 's so well rated! It 's small, appears unclean and unhygienic with lots of uncovered food and flies everywhere. The staff/owner was very abrupt and unwelcoming, and so bad I thought I was misinterpreting the situation. But I wasn 't. His manner continued and he slammed down each cup/plate onto the table. We decided to avoid eating and only two of us had a drink. We left as soon as possible. So bad it was strange.... Please don 't look at the headline TripAdvisor rating because it was the opposite of what we experienced.

"We had booked with booking.com . On arrival we were told that we didn't get breakfast included and that it would be £15 a head. We accepted this although thought was pretty steep for breakfast in a pub.The first morning we were given a menu clearly stating that breakfasts were included with all accommodation. I ordered poached eggs with smoked salmon and the other two ordered a full English breakfast which included homemade black pudding. The breakfasts arrived ,one of my poached eggs was runny, the other hard. The English breakfasts had no black pudding on the plates and when queried we were told that the deliveries hadn't arrived. Doesn't homemade imply made on or near the premises and as the owner states he is a butcher by trade I would expect he had made the black pudding. No alternatives were offered and presentation was distinctly lacking , with the baked beans poured over the other items. The next day I risked the full breakfast with black pudding which was lovely. But again the others had badly cooked poached eggs. We were offered no fruit juice, cereal or even toast and marmalade. On leaving we discovered the pub was unmanned , despite poor mobile signal. The owner turned up after 15 minutes. The bill was handed over, charging us for seven breakfasts when we had six, it was adjusted after he asked if one of us had had two breakfast one day? He served and cooked them so should know the answer to that. We were also then overcharged for nine coffee when three coffees and two teas had been ordered. Having had a family B and small hotel in York I advised him that standards were not what I was used to. I spoke to someone who had also visited recently and she stated a member of staff had charged them £15 per head for their similar breakfast where we were charged the menu price. Exceptionally poor menu, inaccurate advise saying breakfast included then charging us and probably the worst breakfast I have eaten in similar accommodation."
