"Visited last weekend and from the get go the service was horrendous, we were staying in a cottage within a 2 minute walk (if that so had the service been better we would of probably frequented the pub quite a lot! Walked in to the...pub for all bar staff to suddenly disappear, when there was finally someone we could talk to we asked if they had a table available for 5 people to be told I don't think so' with an extremely empty restaurant at 6 on a Saturday evening maybe we should have just walked out then and there! The Bar man then came back said yes we do have a table free' marched us through an empty restaurant into an entirely different room on our own. We were then told go back and order drinks at the bar and someone will come and take our food order. Starters were average at best, and one of them was forgotten you could hear the shouting in the kitchen when the waiter went back in and told them! Quite a while after ordering both starters and mains the waiter sheepishly came back and said we cant do 3x double cheeseburgers as we only have 3 burger patties left, so my husband had a double cheeseburger, his teenage brother had a single burger and my father-in-law chose a different option. No one particularly enjoyed their food, the prawn curry that was meant to be a special was awful and has used the cheapest of the cheap frozen prawns, the poppadoms that accompanied the prawn curries were swimming in oil and slipped out of your hands almost! Now onto the drinks! Its a shame as its a nice looking pub, although it did feel like it was a locals pub and we were not welcome."

Fantastic food. Well stuffed after that. Lovely staff. Quiet little village pub. Will definitely be back. Kids menu available as well for the little monsters.

A very friendly pub, everyone is made to feel welcome. Relaxed atmosphere but very well organised which is a tricky thing to achieve. Food was excellent (steak), the best I have had. Great place, I highly recommend a visit.

one of the most beautiful Sunday dinners we ever had. very generous portion sizes, we are told at the arrival that they were busy and may take orders longer than normal. that didn't know it at all. beautiful place, friendly staff and excellent eating. View menu

we found this pub after visiting lowther castle. the food was fantastic, the quality brilliant and the size of the portions massif! I even took half the meal for tomorrow! will definitely visit again when I am in the opposite and it is also favorable. many thanks for a great end of our day.

came with a friend to give her a birthday contract, nice and warm on a cold evening and a welcome as warm. everything on the menu is wonderful with large portions. (They don't have too much to lunch, but let them fool the big one. it is the quality is just as good. the pavlowa for pudding was amazing. had given 5 stars, but the beer was not a full pint.

Meal for two on our first night in our Cottage. We were told to come at 8pm due to high demand, came back 3hrs later to virtually empty pub with one other couple eating! Good service but the soup was Heinz obviously tinned yet priced...at £5,50 a bowl. Offered gluten free salmon only to be told later there was none left, my wife went with the chicken with little vegetables. I had an excellent beef pie with just 4 chunks of beef . Overall found it was not great value for money We returned later in week for my wife's pre booked 60th Birthday party, We mainly ordered beef which was dry and stringy which most people left. None of the staff acknowledged my wife's birthday despite the room being d...

It is with a heavy heart I have to say I’m absolutely devastated that this place has done significantly down hill. Always a favourite, supported them through lock down and when finally we go for a meal I was so let down. Table booked for...6:30pm Saturday evening food received at 8pm. Not at all acceptable having 3 kids. £8 a kids meal … frozen fish fingers, chicken nuggets and a frozen chicken burger with no butter, no salad just a plain burger and bun. Chips usually fantastic were anaemic! Asked if we’d like veg or salad with chips so we opted for veg…this was boiled potatoes and cabbage, hardly compliments chips! Scampi was over done and the meals was just so unbelievably disappointing. I...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
