"Restaurant le Chapeau Rouge (the red hat) is situated just off the main square (place de la république) in Saint Astier. It is auberge inn styled and quite charming. Tables are seated both inside and also outside the restaurant in a small courtyard. The menu consists of a la carte and set menus. In traditional style there is no English translation. The ambience is relaxing and normal laid back French style. It certainly provides that “holidaying in France” feeling. The waitress was functional if not efficient. We ordered from the a la carte. For starter we shared assiette charcuterie (mixed meats/hams) and for mains my partner had confit de canard and I had piece de boeuf (sauce). Not only am I sure this is what we ordered – it was also printed on the bill at the end of the evening. However it was not what was served and we were both served sliced duck.My speaking french is not very good however when ordering I went to great lengths to order medium/rare. In the UK I always order rare steaks however as I like the steak to have some indication it has been on a pan, I order medium rare in France. I also ordered a pepper sauce. However the cooking of the steak didn’t matter as I got duck instead.Normally I would not send a meal back however the same thing had happened previously in another restaurant and the waitress was apologetic and it was clear meals were mixed up. So rather than let someone else have my meal, and both the wrong meal, I informed the waitress. You can see into the kitchen and it was clear the waitress and the chef were disputing who was to blame. It was apparent I did not have someone else’s meal – and I had to wait until my meal was cooked. This is a second reason I do not send back meals – as inevitably you are left to eat alone as there is no point in your partner waiting and eating a cold meal. When my meal arrived – there was no sauce but by that stage I was past caring!I am pretty adventurous with French cuisine. More often or not I order without really knowing what I am getting. However I do know the difference between canard (duck) and boeuf (beef). While I am not an expert - I believe my partners order of confit de canard is not sliced duck – however we both originally got sliced duck.In spite of the menu mix up – I like Chapeau Rouge for the French experience. Along with La Palombiere, it is one of two good restaurants located in the town. However it does not reach the heights of La Palombiere."
