"When traveling in Europe one of the big challenges is not to go broke eating out when staying in a Hotel. We have learned to search off the beaten path to find the little gem that has great food (not just good but great) for a reasonable price. Well Schein's is one of those not to be missed eateries. We found it on a side street near the University. The first time we ate there we had Schnitzel Mit Pomme Frits (Schnitzel is one of the more prominent dishes in Austria and Germany. It is a veal cutlet pounded thin and coated with a breaded or fried chicken type of batter and of course pomme frits are just good old french fries.) The thing is it is also one of the most over priced dishes and can be anywhere from fair to wonderful. The food at Schein's is home made and amazing. We went back for a second lunch (sometimes one good meal does not a restaurant make.) Yesterday was Spaghetti Carbonara that was the best we have had since we lived in Rome, Italy. That was in 1979 if that tells you the caliber of the food here. Now here is the kicker. The schnitzel was 8.90 Euros (at todays rate about $10.68. In Vienna that is like getting a Double Big Mac or a Double Whopper for $1.50. The carbonara was 5.40 Euros (about $6.48 for a huge serving. These prices and this quality of food plus a family owned business is ABSOLUTELY the ticket when visiting Vienna. Eli (the owners daughter) and her father deserve your business because they have the food, good service and a great attitude. I have arranged with them to give you half price on your first beer/soft drink if you mention that you read this on Trip Advisor. To find this gem get off the Bus or Tram 1 at the Rathaus stop (you will pass the Hofburg Palace (great museums in their), the Parliament Building first.) After the stop at the Parliament building push the buzzer to get off at the Rathaus (municipal government building that looks like a church with a huge white spire) Walk up to the Rathaus front portico and walk to the east end (big arch at the end of the portico.) With your back to the arch you will walk straight east to Ebendorfer Strasse, At the first block you will turn right on Liebigasse and the restaurant will be on your right. Tell Eli you read this article."
