"I'm going to be honest and say that the reason to come here is definitely the novelty value and not the food. One of London's oldest Chop Houses (open since 1757), this was pretty much the only reason I wanted to visit. That and the fact that it;s tucked down a little alley and you can easily completely miss its existence (it's address is 38 1/2 Cornhill) Only open at lunch times, I made an effort to go before I went back to a 9 to 5 office job. From perusing its menu I knew to expect comfort food not fancy food. And as I've indicated, I was right. We went down the tiny alleyway and was asked by the host if we fancied upstairs or downstairs. Downstairs looked cute so we opted for that...read more"

There was nothing wrong with the food really. It was proper stodgy, British food I had bubble and squeak (which had peas in it, is that weird? I thought it was a bit weird my friend had mash and spinach. It was decent.

I have been a customer of Simpsons for over 50 years and hope to continue to visit this unique establishment that serves delicious food at a reasonable price in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, with friendly and efficient staff.

This place is fantastic straight out of Dickens. Matronly service dishing up doughy British originals along with pints of ale. All at shared bench tables. A regular pinstripe banker's hang-out hidden in the heart of The City.

The food, as always, was excellent. You will never leave this place feeling hungry. It is a charming spot and a true city institution for a traditional English lunch of meat chops. My only critique is that some of the customers are too loud and should be asked to lower their voices.

Blast from the past.. I really enjoyed my visit to this old tavern cramped benches busy, rushed atmosphere smells of cooking and shouting from the kitchen loved the place reminded me of Parisian eating I had Smoked Mackerel followed by the Roast Beef special. Shared a lovely bottle of Claret and followed it off with a Sponge pudding. Old fashioned grub £40 each including massive tip. Definitely worth a visit . Get there early.

We visited this restaurant again on 17/8, this time with a group of seven. We had a fantastic time, as always. This establishment is truly one of a kind and doesn't disappoint. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, with a good selection of wines. The atmosphere is great and we were taken care of by the friendly Benjamin, who had us laughing with his cheerful banter. We happily accepted the offer for sausage with our meals seven times. We will definitely be returning.

return vist. I wanted to visit this facility of two friends who lie this place very much. my last visit was very disappointing, so it would be a chance to see if the things had become better. the answer is a clear yes, eating was excellent, the service was much more friendly and much better a completely different experience. I enjoy coming to simpsons and was very disappointed to give him a bad report last time. Well, I'm glad to say this one much better and look forward to my next visit very much.

We stopped by this lovely little tavern for a quick lunch on the off chance they had a table. The staff were so professional and helpful and seated us in no time. The food was delicious and arrived quickly, we had the ham, egg and chips all elements of which were perfect. Very traditional menu and done very well. The place is steeped in history having been there since 1757, which really adds to the atmosphere. It’s tucked away down a little alley so the untrained eye may miss it, but I’d urge anyone to give it a go we will certainly be back! Big thank you to the lady running the place, so kind and informative.

Simpson's Tavern should not be confused with Simpson's in the Strand (also known as Simpson's Divan Tavern) and if a friend suggests you eat at Simpson's, you'd be well advised to check with them exactly which one they are proposing. Both are historic London institutions, both have a thing for roast dinners and both retain much of their old charm, if you like that sort of thing. Simpson's in the Strand may date back to 1828, but as the picture on the left shows, Simpson's Tavern claims heritage back to 1757, the year after Mozart was born. Oddly, Rules , which opened in 1798, claims on its website to be the oldest restaurant in London. Well, let's just say that they're all very old....read m...
