"Unfortunately, I had the displeasure of coming across the Square and Compass in Normanton on Trent while looking at properties in the area with my partner. Our experience at this restaurant left me unimpressed. The place seemed nice and the staff were pleasant, but the problems arose with our meals. I ordered a glass of Merlot and sparkling water. The water was fine, but the wine was far from impressive. My partner ordered a mint and pea risotto with edamame beans and pea shoots, but it came without edamame beans or pea shoots and was described as bland. I opted for a rare sirloin steak with flat mushroom, grilled tomato, onion rings, and coleslaw. Unfortunately, my steak was overcooked and full of gristle, with an overwhelming amount of peppercorns thrown on top. The onion rings looked appealing but were undercooked inside with a soggy batter. The reheated chips, slightly heated tomato, and lackluster coleslaw added to the disappointment. On the bright side, the flat mushroom was cooked perfectly. Despite only a few other diners in the restaurant, the service did not live up to expectations. I paid my bill of £42.80 and left feeling very disappointed with the overall experience."

This charming country pub offers fantastic food in a cozy atmosphere. We had dinner here and found all the staff to be friendly and welcoming. The chef is knowledgeable about allergens, providing a wide variety of gluten-free options.

We enjoyed a lovely roast dinner here. The atmosphere was perfect, with an open fire and background music. The staff are all very welcoming and friendly. The mains and pudding were faultless and the staff went out of their way to make sure our little one was happy too thank you!

We often go to this pub for meals which are always excellent but they just went well and truly over the top when we had a Valentines Dinner the food was 5 stars and the service was 5 stars. The staff are always smiling and nothing is too much trouble. The menu is excellent with lots of choice and you can be sure whatever you choose you won't be dissapointed.

Went for Sunday Carvery 2 meals were produced that looked like they had been sat in an oven keeping warm for hours disgusting, especially at £13. We back again as it was local to where we were staying (just for a drink) my partner decided a bowl of chips was safe to order no it wasn’t, I think they were dragged out of the bin and warmed up again horrible so dumped those as well.

With permission from the friendly landlady, we parked our motorhome in the car park overnight. Free of charge. We then went in for food were lucky to be there for Pie Night. £13 for pie and seasonal veg INCLUDING a pint of beer or glass of wine! We were expecting a standard pie with peas, but had an excellent homemade beef cooked in Guinness with Cheddar pie. Seasonal veg was roasted carrots, leeks with cabbage and red cabbage. The meat was so tender and the pastry crumbly. It was an amazing meal. We then had delicious puddings for an extra £6. All in all,I would mark it 11/10. In addition couldn’t fault the service and friendly staff.

Visited today for my mum’s birthday, all the way from Mansfield, after a recommendation from a local saying there was a new chef… Wow! Just wow! The Sunday roasts were amazing and each of them (chicken, pork beef) were tried by at least one member of our party and were outstanding. The meat was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were fresh and tasty, the roasties and Yorkshires were absolutely delicious! We had a variety of the desserts between us and all were heartily enjoyed… my Dad even mentioned the bread pudding was one of the best he’s ever had, which is quite an accolade as that is his go-to pud! Thank you Square Compass for not only the scrumptious food but also the quality service...

During dinner at the restaurant, I complained about the shower and lack of heating, but the response was unhelpful. The belly pork bites were lukewarm and chewy, and the chicken and mushroom pie was dry. When I asked for more gravy, I was told the kitchen had closed and the chef refused to make more. The overall dining experience was disappointing. Back in my room, the heating was still not on and the shower basin was still full of water. I had a restless night due to the cold room. In the morning, the shower basin had drained but left a black residue. As I was leaving, a staff member asked about my experience, to which I expressed my dissatisfaction. No refund or compensation was offered....
