"We discovered the Black Boy after not being able to secure a table at our first choice, and what a wonderful surprise it turned out to be! We ended up dining here three times in six days, including for a Sunday roast, where they kindly allowed me to bring my own precooked Yorkshire puddings. The staff is very knowledgeable about gluten-free options, offering several safe dishes to enjoy. Each time we visited, we filled out a form to inform the kitchen about any items to avoid. They even have a separate fryer for chips, which was fantastic."

Fantastic place! I enjoyed a gluten-free bun and fries for dinner, and they also offered gluten-free toast for breakfast.

I enjoyed a delightful roast lamb dinner, ending with a delicious lemon tart. While they don’t have a separate gluten-free menu, they do provide an allergen book.

Was very busy here but service was still great, really old and interesting inside. The black boy pie was absolutely delicious, but very hot so be warned if you're hungry! Will definitely be coming back, it's also apparently nice to stay in.

Wonderful atmospheric pub with plenty of space for inside and outside dining. Great choice of menu all reasonably priced with allergen options available. Friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. No parking onsite. A bit of a scary, old-fashioned playground if your children are young. Supervision needed

Lovely 500 year old inn serving a good range of ales, beers, wines and spirits. Great selection of food, both full meals and lighter bites. Really sorry that we didn't have time to eat at leisure but will definitely be back to enjoy an inn which gives the full experience of its 500 years in business. Brilliant.

The menu featured a wide variety of appetizers, mains, and desserts, all of which were well-prepared. Our meals arrived piping hot, beautifully presented, and tasted fantastic. However, I should warn you to wear clothing with a bit of stretch, as the portions are quite generous. Overall, the meals provided excellent value for money. I highly recommend this spot for either a casual drink or a fantastic meal in a lovely historical setting. View menu

We went with a group of non-GF folks for Easter Sunday lunch. The staff was knowledgeable about allergies and ingredients, and they had a full list of allergens present in every item on the menu. I let the server know we had a “celiac order” before we began. My (celiac) kiddo and I both enjoyed our meals and neither of us had any reaction, allowing me to confidently recommend this restaurant. She had cheese fries with a side of bacon (it was an enormous serving), and I had the vegetarian nut bake.

I went to dinner at this restaurant based on a recommendation from a coworker, and I must say I was very impressed. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, even though they were busy. I started with the chicken liver pâté, and I was not disappointed—it was one of the best I’ve ever had. I then tried the seafood gnocchi, which was a new experience for me, and if I ever find myself back in the area, I will definitely return for more. I might even consider staying nearby just to enjoy the food every night!

"Booked afternoon tea here for a family of seven, based on reviews which raved about the warm welcome, possible tour of the house etc. I was looking forward to learning a little of the history as well as having a tasty afternoon tea. The welcome...was far from warm. We arrived just as a harried young man dashed past us without acknowledgement on the phone. We then waited at least minutes, somewhat awkwardly in the empty hallway until he finished his phone call. He then said ‘Afternoon tea?’ to which we nodded and he escorted us straight to the dining room without another word. So much for the warm welcome. We were then quickly served with teapots and stands of afternoon tea. Food was ok, some high points and some low. A member of staff asked us if we were ok about minutes in, which we were. However, I had read in previous reviews that extra tea and sandwiches could be ordered, but we never had the chance as no-one returned for the rest of our meal. There was no way to attract attention, we may as well have been alone in the house. Having pre-paid for our meal, we then left, having looked around for someone to say goodbye to. Not a soul on site. It really was the most dreadful service. Extremely transactional. A bit like Mac Donalds, really. I’m sure the owner manager would be appalled to hear how badly we were treated at what purports to be a five star establishment. We won’t be returning."
