"Early evening on a Sunday in early summer and the place was 80% full – a good sign. We were seated and had drinks orders taken promptly. Irritatingly, the menu was not the same as that advertised on the restaurant’s web site. The fish selection had been reduced from 5 to 3 dishes, while the prices had increased. Why do the owners of such establishments not take the time to update their on-line menus and thus avoid annoying their customers who arrive to find what they had been expecting to dine-on no longer available? The homemade vegetable soup, to start, was delicious. The main course – my wife and I both chose the “freshly battered cod” from the depleted fish selection, assured by the menu’s blurb about it being freshly caught. Naturally we expected a filet (in batter) but what we received was four pieces – like gougons – which, stripped of their very heavy, clinging batter, amounted to less fish in total than would have been in two fish fingers. My “champ” was in fact just mashed potato (without the essential spring onions or scallions) while my wife’s chips were overcooked and mostly the small “end” bits that one finds at the bottom of a bag of cheap frozen chips, and which should not have been served at all. We were able to secure a bill from a member of the wait staff but unable to pay it, other than at a designated cash desk. This had a queue of 8 young women who had been, rather noisily, celebrating a birthday and had, it seemed, ordered as a group, but now wished to pay individually! This involved a protracted discussion of who had what to eat and drink and took the best part of 10 minutes. The idea of such a single cash desk (for a restaurant that seats 140) may suit management but it is most certainly not to the benefit of their customers."
All prices are estimates on menu.
