"Ballater is a beautiful gem of a town tucked in the Cairngorms and well worth a visit. We stayed at the Balmoral Inn which is styled like a hunting fishing lodge with beautiful decor and comfy furniture. The rooms are sumptuous and the bathrooms spacious. Parking is free on the street outside. Reception staff were welcoming and friendly and as soon as we arrived we wished we booked for 2 nights not just 1. The tea coffee making facilities in the rooms included 2 Tunnocks tea cakes and 2 Tunnocks wafers very generous and authentically Scottish. We dined in the restaurant and the meal was delicious, however the young staff could benefit from a bit more training. One of us ordered a starter but the waitress didn’t note this so our mains arrived after 45mins but they offered to bring it as a salad alongside mains which wasn’t ideal. When we ordered a bottle of red wine the waiter brought it and just plonked it on the table leaving the screw cap on, and we requested the bill be split across the 2 rooms but this never happened. Fantastic live music played through dinner and breakfasts were delicious and staff at breakfast were excellent and very efficient and helpful (one of which was waitress from night before so excellent improvement). We played twilight golf at Ballater GC just a few minutes walk up the same road and the course was stunning with incredible views."

We stayed at the Deeside Inn so booked a table for dinner following a long journey and didn’t want to go back out. So glad we did! This Is a lovely warm restaurant and the food is really good. Service was great too and reasonable prices.

My friends and I had a great dining experience here. The Venison pie was outstanding, with tender, lean meat and delicious gravy. The restaurant had a pleasant ambiance, although a noisy table of guests and slow service were minor drawbacks. We would still consider returning in the future.

Waiting 45 mins at breakfast, not even water offered, heard staff telling others dishwasher not working. When order taken lots of basic options run out. Part of the order arrived eggs still undercooked couldn’t eat. Still no drinks coffee or water Not impressed Left without having eaten anything, told reception who just said “sure” Absolutely the worst experience definitely do not recommend View menu

We stopped off at The Balmoral Arms for a quick lunch today. We are a husband and Wife with a 7 year old and a 4 year old. Very friendly and fantastic service from the Waiter Sean, I think his name was. He was great with the kids and explained the food options. Nothing seemed a bother at all. My Wofe and I had open sandwiches. I went for the Roast Beef and Horseradish and she had the Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese. Both sandwiches were exceptional and came with some lovely crisps and a side salad. The Kids had burgers (had to be plain for our fussy little ones) and they came exactly as requested. The Food was fantastic and along with the exceptional service, I can’t rate the Balmoral Arms fo...

Ghillies Pub service defines poor. On Thursday June 8 we arrived before 5:00 pm. We had to obtain the meal menu on our own. The server was occupying a table until about 5:10 when the attentive bar tender sent her our way. At about 5:45 we were wondering where our order was. It appeared to us that our server had not sent our order to the kitchen. The bar keeper found the order and let us know that it would be about 10 minutes. The server asked us if she could be of service, oblivious to the fact that she took our order. At about 6:10 we asked for our drink tab and that the food order is cancelled. Amazingly, our tab had a charge for a different wine and an obligatory 10% service gratuity adde...

Jenni Thiomson was incredible. I really didn’t know what to choose and she talked me through the two meals i couldn’t choose between (the menu had some really good options) and described to me what haggis was. She was so friendly and even though was new to the company talked to us and other customers like she had been working their for years. Incredibly professional, really friendly and a great sense of humour to my undecidedness. Really helped me make a great choice of food. The food was amazing I had the balmoral chicken and my partner had the burger and we had a sticky toffee pudding and a brownie for afters. Jenni was on again in the morning when we went for breakfast and again explained... View menu

Despite its five-star premise and beautifully designed interior, our dining experience at this restaurant quickly turned sour. Upon arrival, we were disappointed to be ignored by three staff members, a sure sign of poor service. Despite booking ahead and being drawn in by the enticing menu we had seen online, featuring haggis, a grill selection, and the omelette Arnold Bennett we were excited to try, the menu we were presented with was significantly smaller than what was advertised. We were informed that the menu had been changed at the start of the year, with other patrons having complained about the limited options. To make matters worse, one dish was unavailable, a pie had to be served wi...

Despite its appearance as a wonderful venue, this establishment turned out to be horrible. The front of house had a beautiful decor, but the rooms were lackluster. The bathroom window was rotted, requiring the handyman to close it, and the draught had to be stopped with a towel. The handle to the shower control fell off, creating another task for the handyman. Expecting a nice meal in the restaurant, we were disappointed to learn that dinner would be served in the bar with a limited menu. The overcooked and dry salmon, along with my partner's misrepresented chicken supreme, left much to be desired. The following day, breakfast had undercooked poached eggs, served in the dining room at least....

"Sunday, 3rd September 2023 – 19:00 Meal: Wine Starters – Main – Coffee My friend and I arrived at 19:00 to a busy but not overfull restaurant without a reservation and they accommodated us upstairs. Menus were produced and we ordered a bottle of white wine and a jug of water. 0rders placed for starters and 2 servings of the Italian style fish stew on the ‘Specials Board’ at 26.99 each. Tomato and chilli with promises of loads of different fish. The toss up was between a steak or the stew (which neither of us would cook at home). The table was dirty and needed wiping – this request was placed 3x on the young waitron who eventually produced a cloth slopping water from a bucket in the corner cupped in her hands where she half heartedly wiped the table with water dripping onto my friend’s lap. Hurried mop up with tissues out of my bag. The white wine was plonked on the table – next to the cooler – unopened and no glasses. Several attempts were made to attract the waitron’s attention. Eventually another bottle was produced opened and we were advised the waitron was under age and not allowed to pour wine. Perfectly acceptable had she produced an opener and the glasses with an explanation I would have been happy to help myself – we understand and appreciate these things. The starters arrived and were delicious! The chef then came out to see us and explained that there was no lobster for the stew – we asked for extra monkfish, he then said there was no monkfish left – but could help us with other white fish and crab claws. He said he was down to the last 2 portions, and he would ensure they were hearty. We were a bit concerned and suggested perhaps we settle for the steak which is always delicious. He assured us we had made the right choice and would enjoy the stew. The stews arrived and were ‘hearty’ if being crammed with the contents of a tin of crab claws is your definition of hearty. The promised ‘rich tomato broth with chilli and garlic’ was a watered down version of what was clearly less than a cup of the original broth left at the bottom of the pot topped with water. It was tasteless – lacking in hint of either chilli, wine, garlic or herbs – having lived in Malta I can assure you I have a deep understanding of Med cooking. I guess we were lucky we didn’t have the salty brine of the crab claws as the broth. It was inedible and we were starving so we kept adding salt and pepper – we were beyond the point of returning the food which was a mistake in hindsight. We skipped dessert – had coffees and left. The meal came to nearly £100.00. This was an expensive lousy experience. We paid a generous tip – because they accommodated us without a reservation. Take aways from the experience: • The restaurant service on a Sunday evening at 19:00 should be as good as it is on a Friday at 19:00 • Being a local and having eaten there several times – it is my first choice for a ‘good’ meal – don’t abuse the luxury of local support. • Train your waitrons to clean tables, by wringing out the cloth and not dripping water on your patrons. • Waitrons (even under aged ones) should at least carry a wine opener, and understand that wine glasses should be produced when delivering wine. • Your chef should know better and never, ever assume he can cut costs by selling the dregs from his kitchen. • A poor dining experience costs you more than you think. We would have ordered dessert, and more importantly returned for a second meal in the next week – WE DIDN’T! I have a friend coming from Ireland in November – do I risk taking her to the Anchor?"
