"Dropped into The Hideout whilst on a few days away in The Lake District, there were four of us and we fancied a quick cuppa but unfortunately there was nothing timely about this place. We chose a table and sat down, previous customers dirty cups still on the table we sat at did not get cleared away. Two lads working behind the counter, two customers already in, one lad working there was busy rushing around not getting much accomplished, the other was busying himself with some Tupperware boxes, even though no customers were being served anything from them. After about twenty five minutes the first of our 2 coffees arrived, the kids were still waiting for their milkshakes which were sitting half-made behind the counter, had I discovered then the amount of bluebottles that infested the place we 'd probably have declined them! After no less than half an hour one of the lads who worked there came rushing back through the café door carrying Oreos and Kinder Buenos from a shop next door, he then proceeded to put these in the blender with the liquid from the half made glasses of milkshake off the counter before bringing them over for the kids, as it turned out, blending milk and biscuits passes as a milkshake, and takes half an hour! As we were on our holidays we didn 't complain but really should have as the time taken to serve us was beyond belief for what needed to be done. Before leaving i decided to quickly nip to the loo, was rather confused when the door named 'toilet ' led me into the kitchen, I then spotted the toilet which was absolutely swarming with bluebottles and a full fly strip of them hanging in the corner. As this room is adjacent to the kitchen I am certain these flies pose a risk to the food also. In a word disgusting, i would not come back in here again. As I was walking away I noted that two new customers were sitting at the table we just vacated, they now had both our dirty cups and the previous punters adorning their space!Aptly named 'The Hideout ' ...I think the owners should be in hiding."

Having read some of the negative reviews of this place, you really need to take them for the sanctimonious tosh they are. Honestly, people who write one or two reviews oozing with disdain such as the one complaining of a lack of demerera sugar should be ignored. This is a good standard cafe with nice surroundings and a decent breakfast. I was concerned when I noticed the sausage and bacon being taken from warming pans but they were quality meat and piping hot. Toast was a little underdone but the nice people gave me a parking disc and pointed out that I’d dropped cash on the floor as I left. Nice place.

Called in for a quick lunch. I always try to support small businesses trying to find one open on a busy Sunday afternoon in Penrith was hard. Ordered tea and soup, the girl behind the counter is in the wrong job she was surly and unpleasant. Our soup arrived cold and we returned it to request a few more minutes in the microwave it came back to the table ok, but not really hot enough. As previous comments the toilets are accessed through the kitchen.. surely a no no? The place looked dark and grubby inside the display counters were hard to see through. So much potential but sadly not really seen on our visit today.

Decor looks like they’ve made an effort but that’s as far as the effort goes. The kids menu is not current so after making a choice, they were told they couldn’t have it. Staff were in abundance but none seemed particularly interested. Soup was nice however, accompanying bread was dry and hard. Coffee was insipid and not recognisable as coffee. Children’s meals weren’t served and we had to collect from the counter. When we asked if it was our food sitting there, there was no apology for lack of service. We try when possible to use independent coffee shops but this is an almighty fail. Why you would have to walk through a kitchen to access a toilet is beyond my comprehension. View menu

Visited with the family. Had 2 burgers, it's a build your own style a choice of toppings cheeses and sauces. Then served with lovely fries and the best and I mean the best onion rings I've had. Burgers locally sourced and tastes very fresh and of a very high standard. Wife had the vege option and was equally impiressed. Little one had sausages and beans. Sausages were very good and would be excellent on a cooked breakfast. The food was served quick enough that you know it's fresh and was piping hot. Toilet was clean, just strange it have to go via the corner of the kitchen but but not a problem at all. Staff really friendly and polite. We left with full tummys and smiles all round would reco...

The first thing you are aware of when you enter this café is the overwhelming smell of burnt oil! We nearly walked out but the décor is lovely and it looked welcoming. We ordered at the counter two coffees, and sandwich and a baguette. The coffees were good but it was spoilt by the fact that there was no brown sugar. The sandwich was tasty but with a very meagre filling. The baguette when it came was I think a brioche not a baguette. I had ordered bacon brie and cranberry. Maybe it is me but I have always been served a warm baguette or at least warm bacon with brie but it was stone cold a slice of cold fatty bacon, in a cold stodgy brioche. The brie was nice and the garnish that was served wi...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
