"Beautiful location, feels like a million miles away from Newcastle city center, but it's really not. On Sunday we went to St. Peter's Basilica at Quayside. The pub was a welcome station for a cold drink, then we drove east along the Riverside Park. Nice area. The pub is left of my photo, with outdoor seating. Some chairs could do something stubborn. The staff was kind, not bad to say. We're going back."

We had an Afternoon Tea here on Saturday 3rd December and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The quality of the food was exceptional and there was a large varied choice in both sweet and savoury foods. We highly recommend it. Ps don’t go on anything but an empty stomach

I used the opportunity to do an admin for work while I had lunch today instead of using my car as my office. Friendly service, beautiful fish finger poles (proper fish in dough, not the rectangles from a box), best chips I had in a while and a cold drink excellent value. Will do it again.

This is a great pub now. Nice helpful staff, good atmosphere and Fab food. We really enjoy Sunday dinner here but we had (from the special menu) the chickens marsala dirty frits throughout the week and they were delicious. The rice powder was also very good. Thanks to all those who work there. View menu

I went to the Merchant Tavern yesterday for lunch with a friend. We tried their new menu. I had the Katsu chicken flatbread. It was absolutely lovely so flavoursome. You could tell the food was cooked from scratch. The price was reasonable too. The staff were very friendly. I would definately recommend the Merchant Tavern.

"The place seems unprofessionally run. The staff all look like they could do with a bath. No overalls are worn and their clothes are all of the type that many would wear to lounge around the house in . Several have longer hair and beards but don’t wear any kitchen p.p.e. The decor is shabby and I wondered what kind of hygiene rating they would have. Although not busy, the staff seemed to be disorganised, falling over eachother and lacking in training. They seemed to handle the food in an inexperienced, clumsy fashion. The only tool I saw being used was a pizza peel for taking the pizza in and out of the oven. On all other occasions the food was handled. I didn’t notice any hand washing or alcohol gel in evidence. The menu is quite limited and uninspiring. 2 of the 6 pizza choices include chicken which Italians would argue is definite no no! All pizzas are reheated to order which eliminates the possibility of customisation. I don’t believe the restaurant would stand out in many European countries, as pizza in general is of a much higher standard than that in the UK. In spite of the above, The basic pizza is excellent in taste (even though it is all re-heated). And for this reason it is worth a visit. Compared to other uk pizza restaurants which are typically serving absolute garbage, the food is way out in front. If you can tolerate the negatives I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with the pizza. However with a bit of effort, this place could be transformed into something truly amazing."
