"On arrival in the Dales we tried at about 6pm to get a meal at the the Rose and Crown but were told that they were fully booked. Fair enough, so we booked for 8pm the following evening. We arrived at 7.55 but were told that the restaurant was closed. If we found a table they would take our order. The table was not very clean which was a reflection of the whole place. They took our order 3 Hunters chicken, one with chips only and 1 large Yorkshire Pudding with pork filling. This seemed to cause some confusion as they asked several times about the Hunters chicken requirement. We were surprised that an establishment of that size couldn't supply sparkling water when we tried to order the drinks. The drinks arrived fairly quickly. The meals 3 out of the 4 started arriving after an hour and a quarter at 9.15. but we had no cutlery which, when asked for, were unceremoniously put in a pile on the table. We were told not to touch the plates as they were hot. They were cold as was the food on them. The chips were dark brown and chewy as if they had been reheated and were cold. The chicken was cold. The Yorkshire pudding was like leather and the contents were barely warm as were the boiled potatoes accompanying them. The 4th meal Hunters chicken with chips only never arrived . When we complained that the food was cold. it was snatched away without apology. After another 10 minutes of not seeing anyone, we walked out, prepared to go without a meal that evening rather than pay top prices for reheated poor quality meals. The 4 different staff we saw were reasonably friendly but didn't seem to be in control of the situation. We will not go there again. It is the only pub or restaurant in the village and is letting down all the local holiday facilities who must find it difficult to recommend it."

This pub is fantastic! They have live sports, a great deal on pool tables, delicious food, and amazing beer. A special thanks to Andy and Rob for making my wife and I feel so welcome.

We ate here while staying at a B&B in Bainbridge. Good menu. Chicken and mushroom pie was excellent with good quantities of seasonal vegetables. Beef Yorkie was also very good. Nice atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff.

The staff greeted us warmly and we had a lovely dinner at the restaurant. The menu featured classic pub dishes, all of which were prepared excellently. We enjoyed a drink at the bar with a real fire afterwards. Overall, it was a fantastic evening.

Stopped here after hiking in the area on a Friday night, and they were good enough to accommodate us despite being fully booked. A straight forward menu, we both had the pie, (steak and ale and Stilton, potato and leek) which were both excellent with a load of vegetables. Friendly staff and simple food done well

Visiting Bainbridge for Beamish rally so decided to book here for Sunday lunch thinking it would be a proper Sunday roast, how dissapointed we were. We both had roast beef,2 slices of the thinnest beef from the butchers deli,4 small boiled pots, even though we asked for mash, frozen veg the smallest yorkshire ever. Not the best we have ever had expensive, £35 with 2 soft drinks.

This is the first review I have ever written. I normally wouldn't bother, but this pub is a hidden gem and deserves recognition. We went for a weekend break and had the best time! It is a lovely pub in a gorgeous setting. The bar staff are amazing. Rob and Andy were so welcoming and put on two great nights. Thanks so much guys, we can't wait to come back again! Kindest regards Fran and Nay View menu

We stumbled upon this charming pub without consulting Tripadvisor first, and we were pleasantly surprised! We ordered a chicken and leek pie and hunters chicken, and we were blown away by the generous portions of chicken in both dishes. The meals were exactly what we were craving and just as delicious as any other place we've tried while on vacation. My wife is a big eater, but even she couldn't finish her plate this time. Overall, a very enjoyable meal that we highly recommend.

We were welcomed in by a very genial landlord: no complaints there. They didn’t have my drink of choice and I was told “you’re in Yorkshire now, love” which I didn’t really appreciate: I’m aware of many, many pubs in Yorkshire that sell things other than a pint of beer for the man and a glass of something fruit based for the lady ; The decor could do with a bit of updating it’s a very old pub and it would be sacrilege to change it, but it does look a bit like it hasn’t been decorated in thirty years. The pies were absolutely delicious, however the veg was uninspiring and i suspect out of the freezer. Quite expensive meal for what was basically a home cooked pie and some frozen veg although t...

"We arrived frazzled because we drove around the grounds in the dark not knowing where to go. The signage inside the grounds is no help at all. Allow time for this if you haven't been before. Fortunately we had because we wanted a pre dinner drink in the bar before we ate. Even when we did arrive we weren't sure if we had arrived at the back entrance because we stood for ages with no welcome or acknowledgement. A very disappointing start to our evening. When someone did come they didn't take our coats. We went through to the snug for a drink. They gave us menus and went away. Later came back for our order. We got our drinks and ordered our food. Then very quickly afterwards we were asked to go through to the restaurant. We had only had a couple of sips of our drinks and it was still prior to the time we had actually booked our table for (7.30pm). We felt rushed. The food came and was fabulous. I had the beetroot starter which had beautifully cooked beetroots and some pickles. It also had a grain through it. I couldn't remember what the grain was so asked a member of staff. She didn't know so went away to ask and came back saying it was probably buckwheat....probably! My main was pork belly with parsnip and an apple reduction. The pork could have been cooked a little longer. I think belly needs to be very well cooked until really soft. The top skin was impossible to cut through as it was not crisp, I couldn't eat it. A steak knife would have helped. Having said that it was still a good dish which could have been excellent. We had sides of mashed potato and greens with pickles both superb. The presentation of both dishes was innovative and inviting. Portion size was good too not tiny portions of fiddled with food which I much prefer. The service was not as polished as the food. There was no obvious manager and we had different servers which is never quite as good as one for the entire meal. The servers were scruffy not appropriate for such a lovely building. Overall it was OK but could have been superb with more attention to some details. Service: 2 Location: 3"
