"We were visiting the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche and saw folks at outside tables eating delicious-looking pastas and salads. Vapiano is an interesting self-serve or cafeteria style “Italian food” chain with very generous portions and reasonable prices. At this location, the attendant (who was not very friendly or informative) gave us a plastic card and sent us upstairs. Upstairs were long lines divided up by food type, i.e., pasta, salads, pizza, etc. When it was our turn at the front of the pasta line, the chef (who was much nicer) took our order and prepared our entrees from scratch before us using fresh ingredients. Then we placed the plastic card on a reader and he added our bill to it. We enjoyed the view out over the Europa-Center water feature. There was a bevy of staff tidying up the dining area and busing tables as folks finished their meals and departed. Seating was family-style with large, high tables for sharing in the main area as well as other seating areas with low, lobby-style seating and traditional dining tables. When we finished, we took the plastic card downstairs where we paid the rude attendant on our way out."
