"For starters, we had half a dozen Colchester oysters served naturale with mignonette, lemon, Tobasco and a smoky chilli jam. Oysters aren’t something I eat too often, but are still something I enjoy and know about. The oysters tasted fresh, they were meaty and delicious, not overly salty no complaints there. All the oysters I’ve ever had, were served on ice so as to keep them fresh and cold, these were just sat on the plate, which was a little disappointing, but it didn’t take away from the experience much. We also had 3 small ‘nibble plates’ whitebait with peri peri sauce and roasted garlic aioli, chicken skewer with warm peanut relish, and sea salted flat breads with houmous and aubergine compote. The whitebait were delicious, with a good dusting and tasty condiments. The flatbreads were good and crispy with equally tasty condiments. But the star of the starters was the chicken skewer, perfectly cooked and marinated, and the peanut relish was exquisite. For the main course we had a sirloin steak (medium rare), a ribeye (medium) and a seafood grill platter (not pictured). Both steaks were cooked perfectly to taste, tender and with excellent accompanying sides compliments to the chef. The seafood platter was lovely with good variety and every component cooked well, we were even offered some bread to mop up the mussel liquor. By this point we were already very impressed. We had room for desserts! With a slice of New York style cheesecake and stewed berries, you can’t go wrong. The poached caramel pear with chocolate sauce was sweet and refreshing. But the star dessert really was the sticky toffee pudding! With a rich toffee sauce, moist and tender cake and vanilla ice cream, it was an experience in itself. The pudding was perfectly rich, you could taste the dates and paired with the ice cream well. Finally, the service. Having read a few negative comments regarding the service, I was a little apprehensive at first. This was soon put to rest as the staff couldn’t do more to accommodate us, asking how the food was at the right intervals, offering additional drinks and breads, we were very happy! Overall, I would highly recommend paying Quay a visit, it will not disappoint!"

"We had been really looking forward to experiencing this establishment, based upon the glowing reviews. Sadly, we were left disappointed and surprised with the service that we received. The setting was pleasant and overall, the food was presented very well albeit the quite minimal portion sizes. The starters and puddings were fine. However, my partner’s main course, a chicken dish, was undercooked and the meal was taken away promptly for recooking. It was returned to us with some extra vegetables but there was little improvement with the cooking of the meat, resulting in my partner having to abandon eating the chicken. We appreciate that mistakes can happen – but it’s how you deal with them that counts…we were surprised that the chef was sent to our table and disputed that the chicken had been undercooked, we were disappointed by this and also most unimpressed that we did not receive any apology, nor offer of a discount...we had even purchased three bottles of liquor as Christmas presents – not one of these was offered to us for as a good gesture either. We felt rather dismayed and annoyed upon leaving the restaurant considering all of this. We like the idea of 'pop up ' restaurants and are always looking for new and unique dining experiences and sincerely hope that Dog House Kitchen can improve upon their customer service skills in the future, should any matters be unsatisfactory."

"DO NOT STAY HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. PEE STAINED MATRESSES THAT THEY HAD TRIED TO COVER WITH A DUVET THAT WAS THEN COVERED WITH A SHEET, SOFA BEDS THAT COLLAPSE. AND WHEN WE ASKED IF OUR ROOM COULD BE CHANGED WE WERE TOLD WE CAN BUT HAVE TO PAY A FEE EQUIVALENT TO ANOTHER NIGHTS STAY. MANAGEMENT JUST IGNORED OUR COMPLAINT AND TOLD US TO EMAIL IN ON MONDAY. WE ENEDED UP CHECKING OUT A DAY EARLY BUT WERE TOLD OUR MONEY WOULDNT BE REFUNDED.The pull out bed kept collapsing so 2 of the guests had to sleep on the chair. We were charged £69 per night for a room that is not upto standard. I have pics, It seems that what we were promised will not be upheald. Asking us to send an email with our complaint and then point plank refusing to refund our money for the night we didn't stay is a joke. The poor receptionist had tried to get a hold of management numerous times during the day and was completely ignored. The only thing we were offered were some extra blankets and pillows, a clean mattress was put on and then covered with a mattress topper that had burns in it, honestly I couldn't make it up, then the housekeeping staff tried to imply that we were smoking in the room, (im a non smoker) and then changed it to say she was just informing me there is a fine if found smoking (one of the guests with us does smoke and she had seen the tobacco on the table), clearly this was because i had complained about the mattress and the state of the room just then she had found Someone's brush full of hair under the sofa bed (a previous guests) and quickly threw it outside the room which makes me wonder if it was actually cleaned. The receptionist that was in training and left by herself also had agreed with my comment that if I am being charged the same price as the Ramada or queens then a certain standard is expected to be upheld.Im shocked an appalled by the service we recieved. Absolutely ruined my friends birthday weekend to the point they wanted to just leave and has caused nothing but arguments between us. Never again what a disgrace."
