"Situated in a medieval house on rue Voltaire - the most handsome street in Chinon - this restaurant is a winner for so many reasons.There are two dining rooms, one on the entrance level and one upstairs. It's a toss-up as to which is the more attractive. We dined happily downstairs, surrounded by grey stone walls, wrought iron sconces with taupe shades, soft grey draperies and plenty of fresh flowers. The décor is subdued yet stylish. (A small table topped with a vase of flowers is placed between each table-for-two, providing diners with a nice sense of privacy in the not very large room.) Upstairs there's a fireplace, which I'm sure patrons enjoy during the colder months.In a country where extra restaurant staff can be as scarce as hen's teeth, the cheerfully energetic 'proprietaire' was assisted by two young men who were unfailingly polite and quick on their feet. The kitchen is located upstairs, which means A LOT of running up and down stairs with plates. (Maybe if I worked there I could have a 27" inch waist too!) Our beautifully presented meals were delicious, and we felt, very reasonably priced. The wine list was extensive and well thought-out. The restaurant's lovely atmosphere encouraged lingering, and since there appeared to be only one sitting for dinner, we felt comfortable enjoying the last of our wine while discussing our plans for the next day.This was our first visit to Chinon, and we are anxious to return. When we do, hopefully next fall, we'll certainly be dining again at Les Annees 30."
