"Our visit last night Thursday, June was not our first, and it won't be our last. Wadhurst has needed a fine restaurant like this and now seems to have got it at last. The menu immediately strikes you as on par...with the best in London, even if there are only half-a-dozen dishes listed. Last night, my wife chose the fish-of-the day, which was sole with crispy capers, samphire, jersey royals and lemon butter. I chose organic local chicken supreme with garlic, mozzarella, tomato and crushed potatoes. Mine was perfect, my wife's less so. The chef had been a little too generous with the lemon butter, or was it olive oil? There was one other fish on the list, and a vegetarian meal. The wines are very expensive, but there are some excellent beers available, our favourite being Harvey's best bitter. As for the general pricing policy, which has a lot of locals complaining, we think that for two courses or for three is reasonable. And perhaps this is a deliberate ruse to discourage families with noisy children in order to provide a place of rest for others. The waitresses could not be more friendly and polished, at the same time un-intrusive. We like the piped music, which is in the form of soothing songs with the level kept low. The new seats, too, are really cushioned armchairs. I would have liked the complimentary hot bread with butter to be granary, and I would have liked to see a side salad on the menu for a healthier meal. But altogether, every good wish is due to the owners Sussex Pass and the chef Adam Sear. We'll certainly go back, but we'll also keep watching them, for signs of their losing their nerve. Wadhurst, with some shops on the High Streets, badly needs them."

"Popped in here yesterday after a long drive home from up north. Pub was fairly busy. I went around the side of the bar by the hatch so I could see what was in the fridge. I waited patiently and was largely preoccupied by their...adorable springer spaniel. A lady then came over to help me a senior looking member of the team (in her 50s). As she did so, she acknowledged a couple on the main face of the bar (who turned up well after me) saying i'll be with you in a minute I asked her about what beers they had and wanted help picking something nice and non-alcoholic for my pregnant wife. We VERY briefly talked through options and again, whilst doing so she acknowledged the couple at the bar saying sorry, I won't be a minute Now I thought I'd decided on a drink for my wife, but the barmaid said sorry, I'm a bit confused by what you're after Rather baffled, I said a drink and possibly to grab some food we're sat outside She abruptly poured the first drink as if id put her out. I went round to the main bar to check the beer pumps and what they had on (not alot) and when I asked she replied well yes, just Peroni in the fridge and what you see here as if it were obvious or that I was being thick. Then for a THIRD time apologised to the couple now stood next to me. It was at this point I'd had enough, so I said sorry, am I not welcome here or something, should I not be ordering a drink? You don't seem to want to want my custom and you keep apologising to this couple as if they are for some reason more important You are being rude Now instead of apologising, saying they were extremely busy or explaining perhaps Id been stood in the wrong place she just said no i wasnt, no i wasn't So still ZERO effort or ounce of hospitality towards me. My final response was to say Dont worry about the drink- may I suggest that you get yourself some manners and additional staff I headed out the door, apologising to those nearby as to show the lady an example of basic etiquette 2 locals then had the audacity to try and defend her! Such a shame, such a bad experience! I feel i was victimised for being a middle aged male, had my pregnant wife been at the bar i can't imagine them treating her that way. Also I am affiliated with the maintenance of Plashetts Park which is opposite the pub, had said to my partner that it would be nice to meet her and bubba there for dinner tea on a regular basis once I'd finished duties. I now have zero intention of going or confidence that I'd be welcomed. Very disappointed and disheartened"

"Hugely disappointed with our evening in terms of the lack of organisation and service. This was a special occasion for my wife's Birthday and we we were grossly let down by a woeful lack of people to serve what was a completely full restaurant. The barmaid was in tears and kept apologising but credit to her and the two others who tried their best to look after everyone. There was no ice in the place so white wine was served in a cooler with just tap water and we were given no wine glasses as they had run out. We were eventually given three glasses (for 10) which were hot just out of the dishwasher and the rest of us used gin glasses and water tumblers. Two of the red wines on the list that we requested were not available. We experienced long delays in being served with drinks as the poor staff were just completely overwhelmed. On the positive side, the food itself was very nice and no complaints there. We were also grateful to Krystle and the other two staff for trying their best to look after us. What is most disappointing, is the lack of response from the owner James to my expression of concerns in emails. Whilst initially responding and saying he would come back to me after seeing the staff, there has been a resounding silence, despite my further requests for contact. I see this lack of respect is also shown to another recent reviewer. We spent a lot of money on this meal and have had good meals there in the past but sadly we could not recommend anyone to go there after this experience."
