"In the beginning, God created many things from Monday to Saturday and on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. Or did he? No. No he didn’t. On the seventh day God created Bennys. This biblical reference does not do justice to just how divine a Bennys is. It is a kebab/pizza/fast food shop steeped in glory and mystery. Some scholars have actually considered Bennys as the final resting place of both the ark of the covenant and the Lance of the Longinus. If Dan Brown has written another book, I have no doubt Bennys would have featured because the food is so good. I have been to Bennys three times a holy trinity of visits. Each time I have opted for a seminal chicken kebab. The chicken has been fresh and plump and proper (a bird sacrificed for the grace of our plates). The spices have oozed with flavour, cleansing my very soul. The pitta has been strong and resolute in its carrying of the other constituent items of perfection. The salad has been clean, cutting through the spice, to reclaim the innocence of my tastebuds for another spiritual bite. The hot sauce has teased my palate (and my perineum) with a fiery wet heat of a culinary miracle. The chips have been a hybrid of soft and crispy, like a kettle chip which has had an illegitimate child with a cloud. And the garlic mayonnaise, oh yes the garlic mayonnaise, embodies the fulcrum of the holy trinity of God. I believe in a church. The church of Bennys. It is wholesome, it is great, it guides me to the green pastures of hope, away from the barren epoch of servitude you get with other late night food venues. Benny was the 13th apostle and he founded his church here in Ashbourne. I once saw a drunk 19 year old get hit by a 2013 Renault Twingo outside of Bennys. Was he hurt? Was he maimed? No, a beam of alabaster white light transcending mind and soul came out of Bennys as it happened. He walked again. It’s not my place to say, but if that accident had happened anywhere else, I don’t think he would have lived. To me, Bennys is more than a kebab shop. Maj and the boys run one hell of an establishment. Just like Derbyshire was home to the Arkwright mills and the birthplace of the industrial revolution, it is home to Bennys my church. While the Arkwright Mills had consequences for the direction of mankind, so too, to a far greater extent, does Bennys. Fun fact: just down the road from Ashbourne is Belper where Timothy Dalton grew up."

"Never again will I order from this establishment. The less than flattering, previous reviews from this and other social media sites should have been the first warning. Instead, I went with my instincts (stupid instincts), and the hunger in my belly for fish and chips. At first glance, this establishment and it 's food looked appetizing and pleasing, online. Second warning, my son said our fry cook handled our order without gloves, and was consuming chicken wings while prepping and proecessing not just our meals, but all the other fried food orders as well. That should have told me to cut our losses, and make a quick exit. Our meals (fish a chips, a side of onion rings and a baked potato) were dripping with grease, and the baked potato resembled as what my son could only describe as school cafeteria food at best. The onion rings (if you could call them that) were rings of fried breading and burnt, shoe stri g onions. In the end, my son couldn 't, or should I say, WOULDN 'T finish his food, because it upset his stomach. His reaction should have been my final warning. Instead, I managed to only eat my fish (I couldn 't consume the fries too soggy aand greast). Back to the fish. No amount of salt, malt vinegaror brown sauce could give it any flavor. I would later regret finsihing the fish. I short, we both spent a heavy amount time in the bath room, expelling what we ate. In short, NEVER AGAIN will we eat at this establishment! One star was given to the young lady who politely took our order. The fry cook showed no interest in his work. Really, why bothrr showing up?"

"Travelling with three young children, just spent two great days at another Merlin resort and looking forward to more of the same, the earliest table booking we could get was 1945. Table wasn’t ready on time, but once seated the service was desperately slow. No one did the industry standard “is everything alright?” Starters arrived fairly promptly but drinks took a while. Once starters were finished it took nearly an hour for the main course to arrive, by which time the kids were over tired and barely able to eat. We had to ask for more cutlery for the main course, and when we eventually got the attention of a server for a further round of drinks it took 20 minutes to bring them. It was not busy, hardly 40% full. Two other tables nearby were complaining about the slow service- also with young children. There were plenty of waiting staff on, they just seemed to prefer congregating by the tills and apparently gossiping- the three at the till near us were recounting an anecdote of another patron also complaining of poor service. By 2115 the kids had enough and needed to go to bed. I asked for the bill and was astonished to find that restaurant items cannot be charged to rooms, necessitating a trip back upstairs to get a phone with which to pay with children in tow. I asked to see the manager and explained that the service was dissatisfactory, and she seemed more concerned that they were all due to finish at 2200. The food was average at best, the prices above average, service well below average, and management indifferent. It was explained that the catering is not provided by the same firm as the hotel- it is Aramark, who are more your staff canteen contracting outfit than restaurateur contenders. Knowing this I’m amazed there was table service at all, or that the condiments weren’t in single serve packets. I will not be eating here again, other than the inclusive breakfast with room rates. I will, like previous visits, take a walk up the road to one of the several pubs nearby that offer better value and service. A highly disappointing start to a much anticipated visit to chessington world of adventures."

"I got home from work today and my mum, who had been looking after my little lad, said she couldn't be arsed cooking so did we want to go to the Willows for a burger. It was a no brainer. I picked the Mrs up and mum picked my dad up on the way. We all just fancied a drink and a burger, except my lad who loves cheesy pasta! So we ordered 4 Cowboy burgers (2 3oz burgers, bacon and cheese on a toasted linseed bun) a starter portion of mac n cheese (mac n cheese, bbq sauce and crispy onions) We were told before we ordered they had 3 big tables so there might be a bit of a wait, which to us was perfectly fine. We sat outside next to the kids play area, the manager and his family introduced themselves to us which was lovely, and we met the Head Chef, Ben, which you don't get everywhere! Then around 10 minutes after ordering our food all came out hot and fresh. Like steam off the burgers fresh! The burgers were top tier from the spot on buns to the fresh crispy lettuce from the streaky bacon to the smash style burgers, and the fries! Best fries around! The cheesy pasta? Didn't touch the sides and my Mrs had to give our 5yo lad half her burger and fries on top of the mac n cheese! The lovely girls that took our order, and poured us great drinks were amazing too, a mention to Liv, Elley, Laura and Keeva! An absolutely lovely pub looking over the reservoir, with attentive caring managers and a superb team of staff!"

"Booked Sunday lunch for two. Place was empty, maybe 6-10 other customers so no reason for such a poor experience. Ordered bread and whitebait, roast chicken and a veggie main. ALL the dishes arrived at the table together! I commented that we had not expected to have everything at once (server was same person who took the order and clearly knew it was a meal for two he replied I understand, I can take the mains back and keep them warm if you like . Who would be happy having paid for food, knowing it 's just being kept warm while you eat starters? I never return food once it 's at the table (trust issues! so declined this. It turned out that 'warm ' was optimistic, while the whitebait was delicious and hot all the food on the Roast chicken plate was tepid at best, I ate maybe half the chicken as I was hungry, I 'd rate the food quality as poor throughout this plate. The veggie main was also tepid although tasty. The same server returned to ask 'how the food was ' and I very politely said the roast was average at best and the food was barely warm, we complimented the whitebait and the flavour of the veggie dish. He apologised and left. Later, while clearing the table, he again apologised and said he had updated the Manager. This is where I feel most aggrieved.. we stayed another 15 mins or so finishing our drinks and, although the pub remained almost empty, the Manager failed to come over and address these issues. We left, won 't be back..."
