"London is filled with restaurants of all cuisines you can find everything from thai and indian through to ethiopian or moroccan but sometimes you just can't beat a bit of British. British cooking to me means one thing. Meat. I love big, comforting plates of honest food whether that comes in the form of beef, pork, lamb or chicken. I'm a meat veg girl through and through so when I was recently invited down to The Grill on the Market, near Smithfields market one look at the menu and I knew I'd love it. Grill on the Market is a restaurant from the Blackhouse group. They've got restaurants across the country in Chester, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester and the site at Smithfeilds market is its only London outpost. Blackhouse are all about no nonsense, honest and simple cooking and that's exactly what they serve up. We wanted to make sure we tried as much of the menu as possible so we ordered the Blackhouse Sharing Plate £15.75) which allows you to try four starter dishes for a very reasonable price. Honey glazed chicken skewers, salt and pepper calamari, BBQ ribs and baked sweet potato wedges. All served withthree dips BBQ, Aioli and a mint coriander creme fraiche. The ribs had that perfect fall off the bone, melt in the mouth texture and the calamari oh the calamari.... Squid has a tendency to be cooked to the point of tasting like rubber in lots of places but GoTM got it just right. Perfectly cooked in a light batter which sung when dunked in the garlic y mayonnaise. I also spied Scottish mussels on the menu and couldn't resist ordering a bowl to share I'm greedy, remember people). There's a choice of two sauces so we went with the cream and white wine option £7.75) which was gorgeous if a touch under seasoned, but a good squeeze from the lemon provided on our sharing platter totally took it up a gear. Make sure you order some bread as the sauce is just dying to be mopped up once you've eaten the mussels. I even drained the whole bowl with a spoon once the bread was gone... For main courses we both went for rib eyes. Rib eye steak is by far my favourite cut it's covered in fatty marbling which creates a rich, beefy flavour. This cut of steak is best medium rare as it allows the fat to melt slightly and all the flavour to be absorbed when cooked right, it tastes incredible. All the steaks at Grill on the Market are served with a choice of baked potato, home cut chips or mash. We both very predictably went for steak and home cut chips because diets are not designed for date night. Tom kept it fancy by adding a skewer of garlic king prawns £5) to go with his steak and I chose a Béarnaise sauce £2.25), which tasted so good I could have drank it straight from the jug. I didn't but you know I totally would've) Side orders of roasted field mushrooms £3.25), green vegetables £3.75) and onion rings £3) set off our meal perfectly. By this point we'd eaten a lot of food. But I couldn't leave without pudding. and things definitely kicked up a gear when it came to desserts. Sticky Toffee Pudding and Pavlova are my favourite desserts not counting Banoffee Pie of course) and here they both were on the menu. It took very little persuasion to get Tom to share both with me...along with a bottle of Picpoul £26). If you go, I urge you to order the sticky toffee....served piping hot with cold vanilla ice cream it's gooey, sticky, warm and absolutely delicious. I almost wrestled Tom out the way so I could get a bite. The raspberry pavlova £6.75) also did not disappoint. A GIANT meringue stuffed with fresh cream, raspberries, cherries and fruit couli. Wow. Just wow. I would definitely recommend heading to Grill on the Market if you're looking for somewhere lively and affordable to have dinner it would also be great for drinks after work if you're in the area. We were there on a Friday night and they had live music in the form of a pianist playing all my favourite 80s motown songs the perfect setting for a brilliant evening. Big thank you to Kamil for arranging our dinner for us and to our waitor Joe for looking after us brilliantly on the night!"

"terrible customer service. We booked this bistro weeks before arriving-we had a confirmation text the day before to confirm. We arrived in Keswick checked in our b and b then booked a taxi to take us to dine-on arrival we found the bistro in darkness with a note on the door- closed due to unforseen circumstances!!!!! Not the way to run a business!!! We would have completely understood had someone called us to cancel and give us time to book elsewhere-will not book here again if this is how they treat customers-whats the food and service like???"
"Without a booking, the restaurant was able to offer us a walk-in table on a Saturday night. That was impressive. We had been told about The Tannin Level by friends who praised it highly. We were not disappointed. Our starters (scallops for me and black pudding for she) were delicious. For mains, I had slow cooked lamb which was superb and Pat raved about her Trio of Pork (oddly named, because it was actually a Duo). Accompanied by very nice Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from the “by the glass” selection. No room left for desserts so we just finished with coffee. We will be back."

"They were very busy, we had booked a table but the walk ins had made them too stretched. The food took ages, the service was poor. Not all of the food came out at the same time. I had to ask where our food was twice. They did apologise when I complained and they knocked some money off the bill but I think they need to think about the service and how shocking it was. They said they were caught out with the walk ins but if they are at capacity for booked customers, maybe they should say they are fully booked and give a good service to the diners they have. If you pay for a meal out as a family, it's a treat and this experience certainly didn't feel like a treat. Which is sad as I expect they can do much better if they have the right level of staff to customers."

"Our first visit to Laura Ashley tearooms and it was delightful! The tea-room itself, beautifully decorated and of a high standard, is in a separate part of the very grand and historic Kenwood Hall, so immediately impressed. This was for a birthday treat, there were just three of us, and what a lovely surprise- our table had been specially decorated for the occasion! Nothing was too much trouble for our perfect host Magdalena who was so attentive and hospitable and lovely. The afternoon tea itself was beautifully presented with a choice of delicious finger sandwiches, scones, macarons cakes and pastries freshly made by the chef straight from the kitchen and I would describe it as a fine-dining afternoon tea par-excellence. Washed down with chilled Californian rose, tea and coffee it really was the perfect birthday treat. On balance the only criticism we had was that we could have eaten one more finger sandwich each (there were three each) and one sweet treat less but the quality of the food could not be faulted, it was all beautifully done. Definitely highly recommended."

"Upon arrival, we noticed the bar was quite busy, likely with people waiting for tables. We were seated promptly and offered water while we looked over the menu. I found the prices a bit on the higher side, but I expected that and it didn’t bother me. Most steak dishes ranged from £20 to £30, with prices increasing for better cuts. I ordered a T-bone steak cooked medium, and it was done perfectly and seasoned well—definitely one of the best steaks I've ever had. The chips were served in a cute mini basket, which was a nice touch, and they were delicious too! For dessert, the menu was fantastic, and I chose the apple crumble with custard, which was a generous portion. I couldn’t finish it, but the custard was creamy and delightful, complementing the crumble perfectly. We also enjoyed a whiskey for myself and a shot for my wife. The service throughout the meal was outstanding. Our orders arrived at the table within about 10 minutes, which was impressive. All the staff were attentive and organized; I didn’t see them engaging in unnecessary chatter, which contributed to a smooth experience. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I would definitely like to return!"

"Such an amazing place to meet friends and eat wonderful food, staff are so friendly and they are always there to help with anything. Pizzas are insanely tasty. The garden area is suitable for winter days covered and beautifully lit up. Would highly recommend."

"Good selection on the menu. For starters we had the celeriac and the scallop, for mains the hanging seafood skewer and the muscles. All were very well done. Not exceptional but very good. No complaints about any of the food. We shared a cheese board, only comment would be there could have been a tad more cheese, though this is a pretty common issue with restaurant cheese boards. The wine choice was also good, and lots of choices of good wines by the glass. Service was very friendly, nicely informal. Didn't feel rushed, we were seated for a tad over 2 hours for 3 courses. Positive feedback for the toilets, very clean!! The aspect we scored least was value. Not really specific to On The Quay, but generally we've noticed how much more it costs for a 3 course meal with drinks. All in all a very pleasant evening."

"Easy to find a space outside, greeted by a helpful receptionist. we loved our room, room 1. so spacious and clean and lovely décor and great view of the square. Really liked the Bramely products and bathroom with very hot water. We grabbed a drink before dinner, great atmosphere in the bar and noticed the Gm being very attentive to the guests. The dinner was lovely, we weren't so keen on some of the main dishes but equally happy picking a burger and a steak we also really enjoyed breakfast the next day and the tall waiter sorry cant remember his name) was very nice and had great interaction. "my friends and I visited the cuvee viii last week for a place to lunch. we thought as eating out to help was still on, we would test a little fancier than our typical high street restaurant chain. the best decision. adrian and another beautiful waitress sat my friends until I arrived, and took us in the inner, when a few people started to smoke on their terrace. the decor in every room is beautiful! they have 2 bars, one closer to the terrace, and one before the entrance next to the it area they can eat in both rooms and each area feels like another experience. they even showed us the private room for the rent on the upper floor, which also has a bar and a stunning space. the terrace/outside area was nice, I would like to enjoy more, but they allow smoking (a little bit for me, unfortunately) it is still completely enclosed so that it does not escape like the smoke. Nevertheless, this does not take away from the beauty of this opposite, in cooler climates I can see that they have heating outside to warm it a little. this part is attached to a bar area that looks like an ingenious nightclub. next time I'll be in the dining room, as it gets colder out. very exciting, as they still participate in the regulation in september. I had the lobster mac n cheese, and my friends had the pizzeria and veggie burger. the chef is brilliant! later we learned that he was a Michelin Star chef who appeared on master chef. the merciful produced a beautiful **** for me, as I do not drink, and the cocktails of my friend were amazing after them. this is a legitimate cocktailable, with bar employees who really know what they do, our drinks were an artwork. I would give the personal, service, decor, eat, cleanliness and cook 5 stars. I enjoyed this tasty and will be back, it is soothing to see them regularly clean all the surfaces, the floor, and wear masks, the toilets we also very clean that is quite rare in the rule."

"If you want to have a Sundays style slap on your plate steak go here. Even after telling the manager I don’t want my food to be piled up on the plate and stacked I still got it stacked and every time I moved my food everything was falling of the plate a proper overspill. Will never recommend anyone going here again. Nayim you was missed I think your only guy who knows how steak should be served. Didn’t enjoy at all as it was like my food came out of a car crash. I wanted fine dine in steak as you charge not Tobys Carvery for the fine dining price."

"We love Bayards Cove so much that we choose our accommodation based on its proximity to the restaurant. This visit was just as excellent as always. The staff are incredibly friendly and always remember us from previous visits. The food is fresh and of high quality, served on beautiful crockery in a wonderful atmosphere. They even go the extra mile for children, making it a great restaurant for any time of day. We have already enjoyed two breakfasts, a dinner, and coffee, and we are only halfway through our holiday. Thank you as always."

"What can I say….We held our wedding dinner and impromptu party ! on the mezzanine floor and had the time of our lives with our nearest and dearest. It’s been a pretty special place for us as we dined at the House by Hilly Gant to check the area out before moving from London and so as we were having a small wedding of 22 people we felt this was the best place to have our wedding. Suzanne and the team could not have done anything more to make our afternoon and evening so perfect. The food was outstanding and our guests were very impressed Harry and his cocktail making skills are second to none. Huge shout out to all the kitchen staff who’s attention to detail and timings were spot on. Leading up to the day itself Suzanne took charge and offered her expert advice on how to dress the room and made so much effort with our requirements. 3 children and 1 baby as part of the guest list! . The beef in particular was spectacular and the chocolate fondant was sublime. We honestly didn’t want to leave. After dinner Suzanne was able to crank the music up and we had a little party ensuring all the guests downstairs were still well looked after our friends were actually dining downstairs and were able to join us towards the latter part of the evening! From the bottom of our hearts thank you so much to everyone for making it so special for us. I’m not surprised that you were recently awarded your second rosette, totally deserved. For anyone looking for quality food, locally sourced, and beautifully executed this is the place to come. SEE YOU SOON and thank you again x"

"We had booked a table for 7.30 pm dinner and after waiting in line we’re shown to a table. The table next to us was very very loud and discussing business on a Saturday night. We could not hear each other above their din. After 30 minutes a waiter came to take our order and we asked for a quieter table. We were told to walk outside to the terrace. Essentially this is an area in the thoroughfare of the hotel (inside) behind a wooden low fence. After another 20 minutes I went to find a waiter who said he would come out to take our order. After another 10 minutes I went and found another server. The waiter I had seen before recognised me and hit his hand on his head and came out to us. The starter was delicious but we had to chase up the bottle of wine and never got our glasses of water. When the main course was delivered by a lady she said “Bon appetit” but we said we couldn’t eat without cutlery. She promised us some but we never saw her again. After 5 minutes my husband went and found cutlery because his fish and chips were getting cold. My shepherds pie was tasteless, lots of potato and a thin layer of lamb in a watery tasteless gravy. Nobody ever came back to check on us. They add a discretionary 12.5% tip for a service charge which I didn’t think they deserved so we took the bill to the desk and told the manager of our experience. He blames the management for trying to reduce staff and told us it was our own fault because we voted for Brexit. I pointed out to him I didn’t. He said it is like that every night. He removed the service charge and 20% off the food which was fair but next time I stay at the Sofitel I will bring a picnic and save a pot of money and disappointment."

"Arrived within mins of the time frame required for seating waiting at the door As we were seated we were rudely told that there would be another table booked after us insinuating we would need to be quick! This made us feel uncomfortable and rushed from the off. We ordered almost immediately as we had been recommended to come for a Sunday roast. Our roast came very quickly which would have been brilliant, however this was because the food had clearly been sitting on the side for awhile. This was disappointing. The check back was not done and so I had to find a waitress to then bring her to our table and prove what was wrong. This was both embarrassing for her and myself and she was astonished with how I could put my finger in the gravy and show it was luke warm. The overall first roast was very disappointing because it was cold the Yorkshire was crispy and cold. After this we did get our lovely roast a good mins afterwards and we were very hungry by this time. The second roast was lovely and the check back was done promptly. We would have stayed for drinks and dessert but felt a bit rushed, so we went somewhere else instead. We felt like we were a bit forgotten about and not very well looked after. We had consumed our table water just after we got our food and no one attended our table to see if there was anything extra we needed or drinks to be taken! Just as a side note: we over heard from the table behind that they had been waiting an hour for their food to arrive and was very surprised it took so long! I don’t think they were impressed either with overall service. Hopefully these things can be rectified for other guests on the future. Kind regards"

"A disappointing meal. We visited on a Sunday for lunch to celebrate my son’s 21st. We were kept waiting for our table then served a very average meal. The roast had obviously been prepared much earlier in the day and kept warm as everything was over cooked, apart from the green beans that were almost raw but somehow still as tough as old boots. The beef was tough, dry and tasteless and we had to ask for horseradish sauce which failed to appear until we chased it up. Having warned them that one of our party was gluten and dairy free, the options were poor. The best they could offer was the roast with no Yorkshire pudding, no roast potatoes or carrots. Just the tough beef and green beans. Not quite what we were hoping for to mark the occasion. Needless to say, with so many restaurants in York to choose from, we won’t be visiting again."

"It’s was my first visit, and I didn’t know what to expect. All I can say this is one to definitely try… The food was so tasty and came out nice and hot. However the mocktail was rather disappointing there wasn’t no real taste to it But overall it was a great experience I would recommend it. Staff where friendly."
