"I went to Le Vieux Comptoir with a friend for a long overdue catch up and the restaurant is a wonderful hidden gem. I 'm not usually a red wine person, but the Malbec was one of the best I 've had! We had a delicious cheese charcuterie board to start which came with a basket of bread. We both ordered the Confit de Canard which rivalled one I recently had in Paris. And the service was wonderful. The staff were friendly, welcoming and made lovely conversation The thing which really ruined our evening was a woman and her friends (see KKSpecialAgent 's review below). When the staff came to clear their plates she responded by saying 'she could have made better at home ' just incredibly rude. Why didn 't she say something before they cleared their plates?! They politely thanked her for her feedback and offered her some bread or a replacement meal, which she declined, before complaining to her friends that she was still hungry. She then spent at least 20 minutes complaining incredible loudly to her friends and all members of staff who came by her table, which ruined the evenings of everyone around her. When the bill came she complained loudly again at the cost, which was very reasonable given three of them had wine, starters and mains. She was so rude that when she went to the bathroom her friends apologised to the staff on her behalf. Honestly, a horrible woman who really impacted my evening! She could have quietly said if there was something wrong with her meal and the restaurant would happily have provided an alternative. Her review is not reflective of the restaurant at all!"

"The meet and greet staff were very friendly and professional and lead us to a lovely table at the back of the restaurant. I am glad that we did not sit by the door, because the street outside was full of people, smoking cigarettes and cigars and generally making lots of noise. The tables are very very close together and I did think that it would be impossible to get a wheelchair through the restaurant. My friends had the escargots and apparently they were average, not garlicky enough. My salad niçoise was utterly delicious and better than the one they serve in Nice in the south of France. It took them a while to bring the marinated peppers and eventually, after a couple of reminders, they arrived and were simply divine! The Dover sole was lovely, the sea bream even better and if that’s not enough, the star of the show was the potato dauphinois. Heaven on a plate! Now the not so good part of the review…. I am not a fan of the food arriving when it’s ready, which meant that one of my party had to wait for their course and as the others were finished theirs, the remaining dish arrived and she had to eat alone. It also made the whole meal time a lot longer and the evening later. The bathrooms. Awful The middle one had no toilet paper at all at 6:30 pm and the door was difficult to lock. The flush was terrible. Work it out for yourself. Not nice. Back to the good bits again as I want to finish this review on a positive note. We loved the food and would definitely return and hope that the same staff are there again. They were brilliant especially the lovely Romanian lady who marvelled at my attempt to try speaking in her mother tongue! Un grande merci to all at LPM (its mystery that you don’t call it La Petite Maison!"

"A very average and pretty underwhelming dining experience. Those who praise it so highly need to venture out more and experience really good food and service if they think this place is ‘befitting Royalty’ Here’s what I liked: • I liked that I made the decision not to have a main course. Here’s what I didn’t like: • Not particularly welcoming. • No bread offered. First time in a French restaurant I’ve experienced this. • Uncomfortable seating and not a well thought layout. Why the covid screens still? Unsightly, ineffective and out of place now. • Really disappointing fish soup. Warm, not hot. The croutons were clearly not fresh and from a packet. Lacked crunch. Tiniest portion of cheese and rouille. I’ve hand on heart had better from a jar (and wouldn’t be surprised if this was as well) • The Sea Bass should have been served on a bigger plate and it seems to have been fried and then put in an oven. Average at best but the new potatoes were a tasteless waste of space. • The ‘pomme frites’ were soggy and not particularly crisp. Clearly frozen. Ketchup was some cheap brand and not particularly nice either. • Usual heavy mark up on sparkling water. Overall a disappointment as I had been looking forward to trying this Richmond restaurant. Do I recommend going? NO Will I go again? NO Was it good value? NO Price point: Vegetarian options: Caters very poorly for vegetarians or vegans. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: £30–40 Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2 Recommendation for vegetarians: Would not recommend"
