"I used to frequent Nutwell Lodge before it became a Toby Carvery, and I must say it has lost all its charm and elegance. Now, it feels like just another mass-produced, lackluster chain restaurant. The atmosphere is cramped, and I eventually gave up waiting for a waiter and decided to order at the bar. They were out of two roast joints, the vegetable selection was half-hearted, and the carving chef (a lady) seemed overwhelmed. However, given the low prices, I suppose it's hard for them to complain. It's truly disappointing that Nutwell Lodge has lost its unique character and is no longer a special place to visit."

"When I arrived, I had to wait for the turkey to be served since the pork had run out and the gammon was nearly gone, and this was only 6:45 in the evening. Additionally, when you pay for the extra-large portion, it's unclear how the chef recognizes who has ordered it, as all the plates are the same size. It would be helpful to have a ticket system to indicate who is entitled to the larger portion. The chef was also asking everyone whether they wanted one or two Yorkshire puddings, which means that those paying the same price may not be getting the benefit of the larger portion that some customers paid extra for. A solution could be to have different-sized plates to better differentiate portion sizes."

"Thursday, 20. July was my wedding day, after 43 years it may not be much, but never, the less we decided to have a meal in our local toby carvery, it is close, convenient, and although the food is not good it is acceptable (for whatever reason the cauliflower cheese is always undercooked and always lacks in cheese(. To secure a table, I used the online booking service to secure a table for 1830hs, this was confirmed immediately so that I and my wife appeared properly at 1815hs to say our evening meal that there was no record of our booking (if I returned home I checked and the booking was as I confirmed) since my booking did not appear on the system at The George, then we did not have to eat in the table, then we did not have any (The cauliflower was from the usual garbage standard with negative cheese)! Overall, a disappointing experience for our anniversary if you operate a booking service, then it must be efficient. The couple behind us at check-in had a similar experience after having booked on the line, there was no record that they did, they went, and without a doubt went elsewhere to their dinner."

"Shocking service. Called to queue for the carvery, then a ten min wait for chefs to arrive and carve. No apology for delay. I asked for the lamb, before serving the chef noticed a slither of fat which he cut off. I expected him to replace the fat with more meat. He didn't. I requested more. He curtly said that is the correct portion. He did not offer an upgrade. My husband asked for lamb and pork. The chef forgot and cut lamb only. My husband reminded he had requested pork as well. Chef then carved pork. Therefore my husband received a double portion of meat. No consistency. He did not wish for mint sauce. Mint sauce was poured on his plate. My husband requested mustard. This was not provided and my husband had to remind him. I asked for a few Carrots. Shovel fulls were piled on. The communication skills were shocking. Someone asked how our meals were. We told her the above. She offered to fetch me more lamb. I had finished my meal by the time she returned to say sorry for the delay....without the additional lamb. We were offered free desserts. Ten mins after receiving the menu they finally took the dessert order. After 20 mins someone asked what dessert was ordered. Ten mins after that someone said the dessert would be with us soon. Finally after another five mins the desserts arrived. We will not be returning. If I could give a zero score I would."

"The service was satisfactory, but since it was our first visit to the restaurant, we were unsure about the payment process and how to order our meals. However, halfway through our main course, we were fortunate to have a waiter who was very helpful and ensured we knew what to do for our next visit. "My daughter and I hadn't gone out for lunch together in a long time due to her work schedule. We booked for 11:45, but unfortunately, the food wasn't ready when we arrived. However, we didn't mind as we had plenty to chat about. When we finally got our food, there was an excellent selection of meat and vegetables. "I went over to the bar to ask if we could sit wherever we liked, and I received a response that wasn’t very clear. The food was decent, but many of the sauces—such as cranberry—were empty. We spent a lot of time trying to get the attention of the staff in order to order our meals, and I noticed that other diners were experiencing similar frustrations. After finishing our meals, we waited again for the dessert menu, but after a long wait, we decided to go to the cash register to pay and leave. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. If you’re considering dining out, I recommend trying one of the two Harvesters in Eastleigh instead."

"My husband and I went to the Toby for dinner with 2 friends. I ordered a vegetarian meal and was told by our very nice waitress that it would be ready in 5-10 minutes. We waited at least 15 minutes before going to the carvery. While we were queuing for the others to get their carvery my waitress appeared with a plate and told me I didn’t need to queue and could go straight away to get the vegetables although my meal still wasn’t ready. As always I was given a square plate (to indicate a vegetarian meal although I’ve never understood why as the cost is the same as for a carvery) and as always it was stone cold. I asked her for a hot plate and was told that the square plates are never heated whereas the round ones are. This is too ridiculous for words, the vegetables are invariably only lukewarm and to put them on a very cold plate means eating a cold meal which is horrible. The person carving the meat eventually went to heat up a plate for me and I went to collect my vegetables. On returning to the table the meal was not there and after a few minutes we asked the waitress if it was ready. She replied that it still wasn’t ready and in fact when she brought the food I had completely finished eating the vegetables. I pointed this out (having been initially told it would be ready in 5 minutes) and she laughed and said I could go to get more vegetables. Obviously I didn’t want to eat 2 plates of vegetables. Is it not possible to provide a main course and vegetables at the same time and on a hot plate? We do feel that the quality of food and service has deteriorated in the many years we have been eating at the Toby Inn."

"The service was satisfactory, but the vegetables were served cold. I brought this to the waitress's attention, but she didn't offer any assistance. During our last two visits, the beef was tough and fatty. We may need to consider dining elsewhere in the future!"
