Savory ground meat topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked until golden.

"Had a great meal at The Grumpy Mole on Friday evening. We hadn't booked but took a chance and just turned up. We asked to sit outside and found a lovely spot on the terrace under the shade of a welcome parasol. Our waitress was very efficient, friendly and polite. The food was served in a timely manner and everything felt relaxed and very welcoming. The two starters we enjoyed were the smoked salmon parcel and cheese bacon potato skins, both absolutely sublime. For mains we had the Cajun burger with fries, coleslaw and salad, and calves liver, bacon, onions with mash and vegetables. Both delicious. Everything cooked to our liking, so very happy tummies! Can't wait to return here for another great meal in a lovely setting. Had to add another review, as we went back for a great lunch on Saturday. It was a very rainy day but that was completely forgotten the moment we entered The Royal Oak. The waiting staff were absolutely brilliant, made us feel so welcome and valued. We were offered a very cosy table in The Alcove. We chose the lamb rump with Dauphinoise potatoes and vegetables, and the Steak and ale pie with new potatoes and vegetables. Absolutely delicious! This place has become a real gem and the staff appear so committed to giving you a really special experience. A big thanks to everyone at the Grumpy Mole Oxted!"

"what a pleasant surprise! best Thai food I ever had. a pub that was taken over by Thai cooks and eating was incredible. we loved the penang and the red curry and can not wait to come back and try something else! definitely recommend if they love Thai food or want to try something new. they still had limited English pub traditional options."

"I wanted to try out things before, and the last one was done at night. I was thrilled to discover, they offer a fully dedicated vegetarian menu and even more impressed when I discovered a few vegan options as well as listed. the restaurant itself is charming, cozy, quirky and welcoming with beautiful art hanging on sunny yellow walls, wooden floors, warm lighting and an open kitchen, so that they see the chefs their magie. it has a relaxed atmosphere, but also feels like a special, luxurious place to dinate. the two men who served us were friendly, helpful and chatting without being intrusive, I would rate the service as the best I experienced in any restaurant. I ordered a starter of spageltempura with asian salate, fresh and tangy, mainly from sweet potatoes and cherry fried fritters on a delicious mild creamy spinat curry and a luscious melt in the middle chocolate pudding with fresh earthberries, celestial and cream for dessert. my dinning partners shared a starter of the brote with tapenade that I tried and would highly recommend for the fresh taste and exceptionally generous portion literally a huge basket of individual baked broth. the food was from this world in terms of quality and taste. it was completely unimaginable. in my party of four people, each of us thought that it was the best that we cost in a very long time. we enjoyed our culinary experience in ginger bistro so much that we already plan a return trip. if they hadn't been, I would recommend you try it, as a meal here is an exceptionally pleasant evening. so a restaurant goer bistro should be perfect in every sight. I would give him 5 stars on happy cow if I could. updated by previous review on Wednesday, 14 October 2015"

"I contacted the pub direct to resolve first but the response was simply not good enough hence onto the review. Can 't just take responsibility and say sorry we messed up there, apparently all very popular restaurants (their words) leave you sitting for half an hour refusing to take your order because there were bookings who came in AFTER we did. Staff telling us different things. It was not busy and we 'd been ready to order for over 25mins before we left, staff were aware of this as we 'd asked to order twice already and were told no there 's other people Infront of you...which turned out to be the booked tables, so paying customer or not it doesn 't matter, you 're valued less if you haven 't booked despite handing over the cash all the same. Total joke making folk sit and wait when your booked tables aren 't even ready to order yet anyway, and repeatedly saying they 'll just be 2mins for it to turn into 30mins, who knows how long it would have been because we left at that point over the poor customer service. Very disappointing that after messaging to resolve instead of doing a review, it was not taken seriously and glossed over and sorry for your wait. Take some responsibility and make sure staff all know the script so you 're not being told different things."

"Pure chance that my son and I came across this pub on the night of the Wales-England WC match, and our fears that we'd be battered with leeks and driven back out into the cold (we're English, after all) proved totally unfounded. Quite the opposite happened: a friendly welcome, good craft beer too cheap to mention, and free bangers and chips at half time. Pity about the game result, but we were not held accountable. The folks who run this place know what they're doing. It ain't the Ritz, but we wouldn't want to drink at the Ritz anyway. Well done!"

"Just come back from an excellent early evening meal at Chadderton Bar Grill. I had pre booked a table for 4.30pm,arriving a little after this due to traffic,a few people already in went we arrived. After finding a member of staff,we were shown to a table in the back, suitable for the five of us. I had already taken a look at the menu online, so had a good idea of what i was going to have, this was an outing for my daughters birthday. Once we'd ordered our drinks order we placed our food order,a leek ham pie for me,this comes with seasonal vegetables, two minute steaks, these came with fries, salad garnish a diane sauce, a pasta dish for my wife a margarita pizza for the youngest. All out in good time to say they were getting busy, inc a birthday party that came in while we were there. The food was great, hot well presented, the staff were also on the ball with service,my only criticism was that the pie was a little under seasoned for my taste, but it was still clean plates all round. We chose the two courses from the midweek menu, taking the dessert option,so a creme brulee, two tiramsu an icecream, nice way to finish. We didn't stay much longer (other commitments) i paid the bill £70..food drinks, all good.. This was our first time, sure it won't be the last"

"He ordered the Moving Mountains burger with the Philly topping and enjoyed it, along with the chips that came with it. I opted for the sosage, mash, peas, and gravy, but found it to be the blandest meal I've ever had, despite my love for mash. I ended up giving the rest to my friend, who also found it tasteless. The prices were quite high at £15 for the burger and £14 for the sosage and mash, and we both felt it was overpriced. However, the atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were friendly. "I have been to many vintage inns all across the country from Newcastle down to Stevenage and never had a problem. I usually enjoy the food and the service which is why I have returned time and again. I probably have eaten in this one about 10 times over the last year. This time upon reaching the restaurant I could not book online. The app kept telling me to retry so we chose to sit in the bar. This wasn 't a problem. I went to order the food and usually with the kids meal I swap the veg sticks for peas as my son doesn 't like the veg sticks. I feel its a waste of food to take the veg sticks that end up in the bin. Before I even finished my sentence about that the server, Rachel/Rachael(dark straight hair, short, wearing a baggy shirt), butted in and said if you want anything extra you have to pay for it . I said OK, I will leave it and just get the veg sticks as I didn 't fancy paying whatever they charge for a little pot of peas that may or may not be eaten. However, I thought it was a rude way to broach this. When I was charged it seemed like more than I estimated it to be so I requested an itemised receipt. I saw that the free drink received with the kids meal was charged so I went to query this. I was told that the kids meal is a deal and as I used a £10 off coupon it couldn 't be used in conjunction with another deal. I wasn 't aware the kids meal was a deal, but I was fine with it and went to return to my table. I then heard Rachel laughing with her colleague as soon as I turned by back and walked away. Clearly with regards to this. Due to this I asked to cancel my meal and told her why. I wasn 't bothered about the deal, it was being laughed at when I am spending my money there. She immediately screwed up her face and said I wasn 't actually. Why would I? Very defensive and immediately looked guilty. I said I don 't know. Because you 're sad? She said well you 're just rude I said laughing at a customer is rude thanks and I have visited here many times. I will not be returning she said be my guest I said well ... no ... I won 't be your guest... Will I?I wont be coming back She said no be my guest and dont come back . I said that still makes no sense I laughed to myself and said I 'm rude when you laughed at me she said you 're rude too I said so you admit you were rude thankyou . Upon leaving I realised she had charged me instead of refunding me. She charged me £90.35. This means £127.50 was taken from my account needing to be returned. I have plenty of funds so its not a problem, but had it been a problem, it takes 5 days to clear back in. I had to then go back and get that refunded on top of my original order, which took a while due to how their computer system works. The man who helped me with this was very helpful and I felt bad for him having to sort out her mistake. So I thank him for his help. Due to the bad service from this person, Rachel, and the complete mess she made with the refund, i wont be returning. In fact, I don 't think I will go to any vintage inns anymore."

"We stopped in here for an early evening meal walking up from the canalboat. The walk through the woods is the safer route from the canal via a track near to bridge 13 but it had rained for 2 days solid and it was sticky in places. The return walk along the road has a steep hill with no pavement and cars do travel fast on this section of road up to bridge 14. We did both and the woods track would be lovely when dry. As for the pub itself it was full of locals in the bar areas who were a friendly bunch to outsiders. You get some locals only bars and this definitely isn't one of those. We had a dog with us so we were restricted to the bar and outside areas which on a cold May evening meant the bar. The bar has good in period décor and very clean with a good mix of stools, seats and chairs with varying height tables to sit at. We both had burgers, one beef and one chicken. My beefburger was one of the best I have tasted in years. No soggy bun and really tasty meat. They offer sides and after enquiring if the onion rings were home made I had some of those. They were really good onion rings and at a good price too. My dining partner said her chicken burger was really tasty and no soggy bun bottom either. The food is ordered at the bar with table service. Deserts were sampled also and overall the pricing was moderate. During our 2 week canal holiday cruising the 4 counties ring we visited a good many pubs, the Badger Inn is the only one that I feel compelled to write a review on."

"Eaten here many time and food and service great, however came here on an evening , didn’t expect to get a table but happy to eat outside . Waitress then . Informs me the food we wanted couldn’t be served outside as it was too cold! . Apparently Chef is worried of bad reviews , I said my problem if food went cold but they wouldn’t budge In the meantime others came in and were given a table in front of us ….. So disappointed in the attitude and lack of concern ."

"My family and I have been coming here for years and we absolutely love it here. My mum orders the same every time she goes in here, and they remember her order every time we went in there yesterday, one of the waiters sees my mum walking in and says ‘someone get this woman a cheese omelette with chips!’ it made us laugh! It’s so lovely to watch how this little cafe has grown in popularity over the years, it’s the best! We love you cafe trio"

"We visited The Captains Wife this evening for a birthday. The food was lovely and thoroughly enjoyed. But what stood out the most was the outstanding service we received from Mike. He was warm and welcoming, knew the menu, was able to answer questions confidently. Served the food in a timely and friendly manner. He checked on us and regularly took drinks orders. We felt totally looked after. Thank you Mike, the made the evening a winner. From the Michael family. Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4"

"Me and my wife go there quite often for food, I can honestly say we’ve never had a bad meal from there. The food is always tasty and there’s plenty on the menu, the treacle pudding and custard is a must for dessert. Also the staff and owners are very friend and welcoming."

"we have booked in advance, as it was a holiday weekend, although the place was not too busy anyway. eating was amazing! the best place I have eaten for months! between four we shared the nibble Nobble plate, I think it was called it is perfect for two. but that was fantastic: the ripening feels like a bone and they were not too fat. the fried mushrooms were not covered with too much coating. the rest was what you had except you, but it was all nice to clean the plate! I've got the huh and mushroom ravioli, it was beautiful! very fill out. perfect taste. my fiance, had the burger with pulled pork. that was amazing, best drawn pork each of us ever tasted! the chicken and lickage cakes came with a really decent serving of gravity and decent amount of veg on the side! the one pot chicken, also was amazing, the kartoffels with which it came were so soft and non-fat! we were toys so that unfortunately not the puddings tried. but the pub itself was a nice facility, drinks were decently expensive, waiting personal were amazing, and that was from this world! a very specific must!"
"We arrived to be told there was no one booked in with our name. Then we were asked if it might be under a wrong name? How would we know. They decided maybe we were under a wrong name so we could go to a table. After waiting an eternity our food finally arrived. Steak heavily coated in salt, steak pie dry and tough, tipsy chicken cold, side salad was just a few leaves looking as though it was a rabbits left overs. Diet Pepsi sent back twice as flat and strange taste to first one. We could have sent the meals back but then would have had to wait another eternity and we were so hungry it was easier to leave it. No one even asked us if we had enjoyed our meal. Dessert order taken after we had to ask, we had waited 35 minutes after being given the dessert menus. We stopped visiting The Grouse due to the last time being of a poor standard but was told it had improved. Shame we listened. Yes we could have sent the meals back, but then we would have waited another eternity. Yes we could have argued the food wasn’t worth it but we understand you need to make a living. You said your chef did his best, maybe he did, but that isn’t helpful, it doesn’t change the poor service and food. In a nut shell, we won’t be back. Two chances were enough. Other people may have had better experiences it’s just a shame that a pub we used to go to a lot has really gone down hill in our eyes."

"My niece and nephew were meeting up for a family lunch with their partners. I have dined at the Crown a few times and have found the owners very welcoming. The Crown is an ideal venue for a good value home cooked meal. We hadn’t booked as it was rather an impromptu event. There were 7 of us, Suzanne organised a table promptly for our group. My husband although having popped in for a pint on various occasions hadn’t eaten here before. His verdict on his pie , mash and veg was excellent, he said best pub pie in ages. The chicken curry’s went down well. The homemade broccoli and Stilton soup was delicious. Steak and chips fab. The puddings went down well. My niece ordered the chocolate brownie and requested whipped cream. Nothing was too much effort. Thankyou for your service and hospitality at the last minute. We will of course return."

"We are absolutely disgusted with the service, had read the good reviews so got there early and what I assume was the landlady gave a friendly welcome. We placed our food order and we commented that we had timed our arrival well since a large party then arrived along with other couples all ordering food, after a while the adjacent table to our was served with fish and chips we assumed we would be next despite other tables ordering after us being served, after virtually an hour waiting my wife went to the bar to enquire as to our food not arriving only to be told the printer had run out of paper and the order had not gone through but was offered to put it though again, bearing in mind we were now behind about a dozen orders so my wife refused this and we left. The most annoying factor was the land lady had seen we had no food despite taking the order herself yet when we complained at the bar she did not even acknowledge us or check what the problem was. She continued to sit at a table near us writing out the specials on a notice board. No offer of complimentary drinks absolutely nothing so we went to the Greyhound at Hickling and had great service and an excellent meal."

"My wife and I were hungry at the Northumberland coast, known for its famous fish and crab sandwiches but lacking in vegan options. We decided to stop in Alnwick and came across The Black Faggot, an old pub with an interesting building that seemed to be popular with the locals. It was around 5pm, and we were lucky to find a table since the place was fully booked later due to reduced capacity during COVID-19. We were pleasantly surprised to find more than one vegan option on the menu. I started with the deep-fried vegan cheese, which was delicious and just the right portion size. Both my wife and I chose the courgetti bolognese (spaghetti bolognese with courgette noodles) for our main course. Both dishes arrived quickly and the service was efficient. The pub had implemented COVID security measures with perspex screens between tables."
