"I booked the Crown for my mums birthday dinner on the Saturday 25th November as I had seen generally good feedback online. I used to frequent the Crown many years back and on entering the bar area I was impressed by the refurbishment as it does look very modern and stylish. Unfortunately that’s where the Crown continuing to impress pretty much ended for my guests and I. On arrival I let the restaurant know we had arrived a bit early and was told the table was ready, come through whenever..we literally finished our drinks in the bar and went through, only to be told they’d given our table away. Not great! Had to wait till other guests had finished, cleared/reset tables. Offered complimentary drink, of which only one turned up. To be honest, they weren’t particularly interested that we had to wait or drinks didn’t turn up..it was difficult to get anyone’s attention. The staff and staff in general seemed uninterested and overworked. Food in the end was pretty average..nothing special, except the price. Which although wasn’t extortionate, was pricey for average food. You get better for less elsewhere. It appears you’re paying for the nice setting..which is lovely until it becomes noisy, hard to get to the bar and doorstaff start policing the main entrance after a certain time. All of which detracts from what could be a nice place.. Would I go back..not for a meal as it’s overpriced and not all that really in terms of service or quality..possibly for a drink with mates. When I was younger this was one of the places everyone went to be seen, looks as if it’s still that place for some, just jazzed up and capitalising on the gastro-pub revolution. I’m also sure it’s part of a group, as I went to the Mermaid for Sunday lunch..v similar menu. However the food was exceptional, service was far superior and the bill was surprisingly low. In short the whole experience was much better..so if it is part of a group, then the Crown could learn a few lessons from the Mermaid."

"Having enjoyed meals previously at The Lyttleton we decided to celebrate our Anniversary, which was a big mistake. We stood a good 10 mins waiting to be spoken to and taken to our seat. We then had another good 10 minute wait until someone came to ask if we wanted a drink. WE were about to get up and leave. Luckily we had decided what we wanted to eat so we didn't have to wait again for someone to come back to us. A few minutes passed before being told my starters was off the menu they'd sold out of mushrooms! My soup was beautiful but the Lobster and Tiger Prawn Pot was nowhere near the size that it looks like on the website. It was about a third of the size which made it expensive. Our meals finally arrived. The fish was hot and beautiful, it was served with look warm soggy chips and look warm mushy peas. I thought the chips were supposed to be double fried for crispiness? I should have complained at the time but I was hungry by this time and I wanted to eat at the same time as my husband, as goodness knows when I would have got a meal again. Had a waitress come and checked if we wanted another drink or to check if all was ok, I would have complained! We then ordered a coffee and mini dessert. The coffee finally came. It was quite a long time after we had finished our coffee, that our mini dessert was served! Guess what? The bill came quicker! I didn't want to upset my evening by causing a fuss but we were pleased to get out! There was not enough staff on for a very busy Saturday evening. We were very disappointed with the whole experience."

"We arrived early and had a drink downstairs. While waiting at the desk the manager came up to welcome us. Then something very odd happened: one of the young waiting staff pushed in between us and the manager rather than go round us. The manager shrugged and gave him an odd look rather than give him advice. We all laughed it off. We sat down at our table and were immediately asked if we would like something to drink before I had even had a chance to look at the wine menu. We pointed out one wine glass was dirty and it was taken away. Minutes passed. In fact about 25 of them and nothing happened. So we asked for the wine and a glass. More time passed. I read the advert on the table which promised a ‘Stylish Easter’, which seems to miss the point of Easter. We spoke to the people at the table next to us who we knew and asked after their food. They said the pork belly was cold. The sea bass was ok. Our wagu burger and fishcakes arrived. Both were lukewarm to cold, as were the chips. We called the manager and he replaced them immediately, looking increasingly harassed and at odds with his young naive staff. The burger was too chewy to eat. The fishcakes were ok. Before we had finished one of the young lads stood by the table staring at my plate oddly. He asked me if I had finished my main course when I clearly had not. We asked for the bill and left. The manager did not say anything about the problems. I reluctantly paid the £51 but did not leave a tip as the service was non existent. And the final irony: when I went to the loo on the way out, there was pumping hip hop music totally at odds with a restaurant setting. We drove back through Bray and stopped at the pub on the high street there. It was like entering a calming world of normality. No music. Young but experienced and trained staff in control. Happy customers. What a contrast! The new manager at The Ferry clearly has his work cut out to improve standards."
