"We dropped in for a meal last Sunday night to break our journey. We had a lovely meals my husband had the steak special with mushroom sauce the chips were crunchy just as we like them and the steak was nicely cooked and great value . I had the fish pie and found it to be tasty dish. We had delightful service from Evie and Jade who were both friendly and professional. I left my jacket there and the staff went beyond to have it returned to me really fantastic service . Thank you Bills Newbury for a lovely meal and amazing customer service."

"We went in today around 6 and were seated right away rather tucked in behind the back, our server was sweet but rushed off his feet. we wanted to start our dinner off with just a couple drinks and some fries and talk before we got settled in to order, however I think we were treated below the barrel because we had not ordered more, however im glad we didn’t as a £4.50 serving of fries was half the size of my fist and rather bland, we ordered the cocktails and were rather disappointed that they tasted like pure tequila rather than hints of the supposed flavours as described on the menu, im glad we decided to go somewhere else after this experience. It was our first and last time there, such a shame because it looks nice. I know the server was rushed off his feet but we didn’t receive a check back or second serve and waited 30 mins for the bill. crazy."

"we chose the restaurant for the convenient access and also because I was before and then enjoyed it. greeting and personal were good, beautiful and efficient. the food itself was not great : one of us had the shepherds pie and lamm rack, which seemed tasty, but the part was tiny! I had the prawn krabbe linguini and it was so spicy and so full of garlic that I could hardly eat it and had no joyful taste of something out of burned garlic! pity! it has actually felt very uncomfortable to the point of illness. please taste her food before they serve the generality"

"Lovely place we went for breakfast on Sat morning (24th Sep at 0830). Was a little busy but not heaving. We ordered avo smash with poached eggs. Poached eggs were missed (only plated avo smash on sourdough). They did bring out the missed eggs graciously when prompted, partway through our meal. Eggs werent runny as we’d requested it was awkward to politely remind (again) so we just ate it. Unfortunately we were charged 7.95 for the dish (which should include the omitted poached eggs) PLUS 2.00 again for poached eggs (as if we’d ordered extras, which we hadnt). We realised after leaving they charged us 9.95 for 7.95 dish which is naughty. Please carefully check your meals and bills."

"I never had a bad experience here. wow! I can not recommend this special bill enough . it has been incomparable to other bills I have been, the staff are so incredibly friendly and the service speed is amazing for the quality of the food. I had the set menu in general and dessert. all vegan beetroot steak with chips and estragon mayo- fantastic meal! the steak was the perfect texture, but if they don't like salt, it's not for them, the only thing I can criticize, how crazy salty the steak was. every other aspekt was there. the estragon mayo is a perfect sauce for everything if I am honest, my partner even took some and paired it with her fish finger sandwich. the caramel and chocolate tar came with a ball of cocosus sorbet and crushed oreo cookie and oh my goodness wow. such exquisite taste and texture (personally I don't like cocosnus, so I would preferably have lemon or celestial, because the cocosnus ended tasting like cocose oil). the crispy basic was wonderful and it is a perfect dessert overall. very recommend this restaurant for all times of the day, vegan friendly and excellent quality."

"Goto Branded or The Giggling Squid instead Avoid Bills at all costs. We went for a meal having booked a table last Monday as we had family over from Australia. We were greeted and taken to our table where our waitress told me there were some menu items that were unavailable due to delivery issues, I was told that to save her having to tell the group she would tell me and I could tell everyone. The first red flag. We were given menus containing starters, mains and desserts, having seen desserts we wanted, we decided to have main courses and desserts rather than starters and mains. We ordered drinks next, some of the party had asked for large bottles of peroni, we were told that again due to a delivery issue they only had one, so the other guests would be given two small bottles for the same cost. We ate our main courses and were then presented with dessert menus and asked if we would like more drinks. Firstly the dessert menus were completely different to the ones we had seen initially and no longer offered our preferred options, we were told that the menus had changed (something we should have been told when we arrived) and that the desserts we had seen on the original menu were no longer available. Again, delivery issues were blamed for the new main menus not having arrived, despite having new dessert only menus? Secondly, we were told that on the second round of drinks that we would be charged for 8 small bottles rather than 4 large bottles. We asked for the manager to come and speak to us about these issues, he arrived at the table, his shirt half untucked and sar astically announced How can I help . He then argued with us regarding the menus, stating that the menu had changed and there was nothing that could be done, when asked if he thinks we should 've been told when we arrived he said yes, but the new menus havent arrived, hardly the point. He also told us that the second round of drinks had to be paid for and that he had authorised the reduction on the first round, this was a lie. The waitress told us at the table when we first ordered them, she did not leave to speak to him, so she couldnt possibly of asked his permission. The manager is arrogant, very unsympathetic and seems to have a God complex because he 's in charge . Simple steps could 've been taken to ensure that we returned again but the unwillingness to help, the lack of empathy and arrogance shown by the manager mean that I will not only never return, but also encourage others not to waste their time or money."

"Disappointing visit. Went for breakfast on a rare girls day with my daughter. There was no one in the top area so we walked downstairs to the bar area as that 's where my daughter wished to sit. We were told we couldn 't sit there and to go back upstairs where someone would seat us. I advised there was no one upstairs and got short thrift about someone being on their way. Back upstairs and we were told we couldn 't sit in a booth as it was reserved but had no reserved sign on and none one used the booth for the 40 minutes I was there. We were also refused to sit at a table of 4 'just in case some more people came in ' and had no choice but to sit where we didn 't want to, under the air con and getting the draft from the main door which was open. The service was poor to start with but thawed after I ordered. I got the feeling they thought I was there for the kids eat free thing and decided to be nicer when I ordered two items of the usual menu. I used to love Bill 's in Reading and had been looking forward to going again so this experience was a big disappointment. This one definitely doesn 't have the same vibe as the Reading one. On the plus side, once thawed the staff seemed quite nice and attempted to be chatty but it was just a little too late by then sadly On a plus side, the food was very good. Pancakes looked great and my halloumi and poached eggs was super. I wouldn 't recommend this Bill 's though and wish we had gone somewhere else."

"The service was good and the staff were very warm to our wishes for our children. We were abandoned when our food arrived 5 minutes after our order. A large breakfast was made of gray/uncooked bacon, glued together and not into the microwave for very long, a single cumberland sausage, which tasted like wet toast, some cold button mushrooms, lukewarm warm beans, roasted potatoes, 2 fried eggs and Stale bread. The eggs were the only reasonable items cooked on the day. A real shame."

"We made a reservation for 7:30pm and were unaware that the restaurant closed at 9pm until we arrived. Despite not feeling rushed, we did not leave until 9:30pm. It would have been helpful to have been informed of the closing time beforehand, as we were the only customers and felt pressured not to overstay our welcome. Additionally, we were disappointed to find that at least 2 cocktails were unavailable due to ingredients running out."

"I wouldn't normally go to Bill's because the service is always bad. But this was a different restaurant. Unfortunately the service was still bad. It took them over half an hour to bring water and our drinks. We ordered starters to share but they were small. The large calamari only had 6 pieces in it! Among the mains, we had the black gold burger and the buttermilk chicken burger. Again the portions were small, meat overcooked and dry. They had a 660ml bottle of Peroni on the menu but they did not have stock. They offered me two 330ml bottles but would charge the higher price for two instead of the same price as the 660ml bottle. Terrible customer service, especially for our large table. We had to keep asking for the bill. They spent most of their time chatting around the till. No more Bill's."

"Overall I had a lovely time with my friends and family for my birthday lunch. We received a warm welcome and thanks from the staff. Everyone enjoyed their meal and drinks. There was a bit of a wait in-between finishing the meal to receiving the bill. Would still go back again. Thank you"

"We had recently visited Bill 's in Reading and I said in my review, I shall return! . We had booked a table for 7pm and were greeted promptly and very courteously by a very happy and smiling young lady. The ambience was very warm and friendly. The lighting in particular was set perfectly and made for a very conducive dining Date Night . We also caught the tale end of the early diners with young children and, their presence enhanced the feeling of Christmas approaching as we also looked out onto the immaculate High Street Christmas decorations. The menu has something for everyone; young and old, not overly simple and not overly sophisticated. My partner had the Sea Bass and I had the Fried Chicken. From order to service, on what was a busy Friday evening, took very little time and the food was both hot and well presented. My chicken was a little bit dry and the Brocoli a bit under done but, nevertheless, very tasty. My partner said her Sea Bass was perfect. The standard of food and particularly the service was very good, and like my comments regarding the Reading restaurant, all the staff were Happy! We have found one of our firm favourites in Bill 's and, will look out for one wherever we may travel. We 'll done Bill!"

"Decided to go to Christophers for the brunch we had heard that the chocolate brioche French toast was worth trying. It was yummy ! I wasn't able to finish mine but I think most people would be able to. We had coffee and tea also. We did contemplate ordering the pancakes but we were too full! It wasn't too busy at all, considering it was half term.... it was a Wednesday though so perhaps that's why. We did call ahead as we were running 5 minutes late, the staff were understanding. The service was quick and the vibe inside was quite chilled. I do think they should have a better drinks menu and offer more savoury vegetarian options for breakfast as they only had avocado on toast. Another couple left in a huff as they wanted pancakes and they were only available on the weekend menu. Maybe this is something that could be adjusted? Other than that a good experience, I would visit again!"

"Staff were welcoming and it was explained to us that we would have to wait a little while for a seat because of overbooking which was a little disappointing. However, it was not a long wait and we both agreed that the food, (steak and ale pie and beef lasagne) were beautifully cooked."

"the hospitality and experience in gauchos was absolutely 5 stars. the personal is amazing, it was very covid safe. leo, who was our waiter on our table, was amazing, would not have asked to come better from leo. we were really looking for, eating and drinking was amazing, the bottomless brunch was absolutely worth it."
"We were celebrating my father’s 89th birthday. The staff on arrival were very attentive, the restaurant itself is elegantly and tastefully decorated, with a truly homely feel. We were shown to our table which was perfect for our large family group. The delicious food was served promptly. The staff were aware it was a birthday celebration and suggested for a bit of fun to serve a birthday brownie after our meal with sparklers and candles finishing off a lovely experience. We all agreed staff were faultless"

"Very comprehensive menu with varied choices. The only thing was there was a set menu choice and I am sure some of our party made choices that would have fitted the set menu. It was not explained to us whether we could 'mix and match ' so we paid full price for everything. The night we attended there was a live band which was very good although it did make eating a meal a little difficult as the staff were a bit distracted by the band. Notwithstanding that, we would definitely go again knowing what to expect."

"Some friends of mine booked a surprise birthday breakfast for me today. As always the Bills staff managed to make it a memorable occasion, singing me happy birthday and making sure the food and service was excellent. In all my meals there I've always found the staff super friendly and helpful. So thank you again for making my birthday surprise so special."

"Very disappointing. I have enjoyed eating at Bill 's several times over the last few years, mostly at the Berkhamstead branch. Last night 's visit was far below the modest standard we have come to expect. Tuesday night is not usually a busy night and there were almost as many staff as customers at around 8pm. Perhaps bored out of their minds, the waitresses were deep in conversation with the waiter around the till and apparently forgot what was expected of them once our orders were taken. The food and simple drinks eventually arrived after much prompting, brought by the very apologetic waiter. The platter starter was very nice but the burgers weren 't. The well done one was too dry while the medium was under cooked and the bun was stale and fell apart, as if it had been inexpertly thawed in a microwave. The chips were limp and not crisp. In previous visits, all had been just right. The point of a limited menu is to ensure a consistently high standard. The chain needs to decide whether it is going to close this failing branch or invest in some proper management to bring it back up to scratch."
