"I visited for brunch on Sunday 3rd September with a couple of friends. Their previous experience was good. This was quite the opposite! The attitude of the server was poor but she could have had a bad morning. We sat in the conservatory section and were handed the menus and a drinks order was taken. A few minutes later the server came back to take our food order. I asked for Eggs Benedict and requested that I swap the ham for streaky bacon. The server said she would ask the chef but it would cost more. One of my friends ordered the Salmon Stack and the other Poached Eggs on Sourdough Toast. When the food arrived the problems arose. My friends poached eggs had yolks that were over cooked and the whites looked as though they had been whisked and as a result held a lot of water. She sent that back. A second attempt by your chef I use that term loosely didn’t fare any better. The yolks may not have been over cooked but you could wring the water out of the toast. It was a soggy mess and inedible. This was subsequently returned. My other friends Salmon Stack seemed to be devoid of the key item Salmon! It was literally a potato cake. My eggs Benedict were terrible. Again the eggs were over cooked and had been placed on lettuce on top of the muffin. As a result of having hot eggs placed on the lettuce it became limp and slimy. Around the dish the Chef had added a balsamic reduction swirl which did nothing to enhance the food, or the presentation. Again the eggs hadn’t been drained properly and this destroyed the muffin which was, like my friends toast , a soggy mess. The streaky bacon that I paid an additional £2 for was undercooked and inedible. The member of staff who cleared the table never checked back to see if everything was okay or asked about the food I left. This was probably the worst brunch I have ever had. Your Chef ? needs some serious training in cookery basics."

"With an all-in cost of £75 per person (including water taxi and tip), we expected to feel like we couldn’t wait to return. Instead, we left thinking it was a night to forget; maybe it was an off night for the cook or perhaps they were just having a bad day. Perhaps it’s the end of the season and some have lost interest? Let me start with the positives: the location is excellent. A beautiful autumn sunset and calm waters made for a lovely arrival. The service was decent, and there’s no complaint on that front. However, the meal itself was extremely average. We’re not food snobs, but we could have prepared a better dinner ourselves at home. The crispy squid was anything but crispy, and the scallops, priced at £5 each, lost their delicate flavor. As for the plaice, it was hardly legal catch size and may have even fallen under the limit. There was barely any meat on each fish, and we struggled to peel it from the bone. Moreover, the plate was overloaded with unnecessary garnish, which only added to the disappointment. The preparation and presentation felt amateurish and mediocre, as if the dishes were hurriedly thrown together. We would have been better off at Rockfish or Neil’s in Sidmouth, which would have cost much less and provided far better quality fish. We're genuinely sorry to say that our experience at River Exe Restaurant was not enjoyable. We’re not the type to complain for the sake of it, but had we been dining alone and not with friends, we might have even sent our main course back. We can only hope this was an off night for them and that better experiences await others. However, we certainly won’t be rushing back, even if someone else is footing the bill."

"Absolutely disgusted at the way my Husband has just been treated in this establishment. Came for our anniversary meal at recommendation of work collegues being new to the area following moving up from England. We asked for a table for 2, which we were given a booth straight away. After this we waited over 15 mins for a menu, i was on the verge of walking at this point to be honest, looked at numerous times by the staff but no menu. A girl came over with the menu which she brought over, we ordered 2 drinks. When the bar woman brought the drinks over she informed my husband it was a non sports pub not allowing team colours and he was not allowed to wear the top he was wearing, which was a long sleeve Rangers training jumper. I had to watch my husband shamed in to taking his jumper off in a pub AFTER ordering our drinks. He was stood at the bar when i asked for a table should it not of been mentioned then when noticed? There is no mention of this on the website and certainly not on entering the pub, no signs what so ever. I paid for the drinks and left. I will never return to this place no matter who tells me great reviews. I suggest your staff put a notice on the website and the foyer window if this is how you feel. An English gentleman from Manchester, surrounded by 4 great teams (city, utd, Liverpool and Everton) made to take of an insignificant Scottish team top is disgusting. For those reading this review, we had a lovely meal and drinks else where spending £100 quid. There loss is another restaurants gain!"
