"Reflecting on the old menu, it attempted to be overly creative, obviously aiming for local awards, but often felt too extravagant and rich. I dined there many times, and found the meals to be excessive and trying too hard to impress—overthought and oversaturated. The service was acceptable, but the timing from the small kitchen was very inconsistent, leading to long waits for food when the dining area was full, likely due to the complicated menu. Now, under new management, I can confidently say that the food is exceptional, and the atmosphere is welcoming. If you’re seeking large portions, this might not be the place for you, and don’t let negative reviews deter you. For those who want hearty servings, you may prefer a chain like Harvester. However, if you’re after amazing flavors, beautifully simple presentation, a traditional pub ambiance, and attentive staff, I highly recommend visiting this impressive addition to the Kent countryside. I took my kids and partner, and I must say, my children have never eaten cauliflower with such enthusiasm! For starters, we enjoyed the salmon and beetroot dishes—both were superb and would cost four times as much in the top restaurants of big cities, without the flavor to match. Our main courses included exceptionally seasoned cod, elegantly presented with rich taste, and their take on the Sunday roast (beef) was outstanding. The beers are sourced from microbreweries, steering clear of the bland, mass-produced options. The Sunday morning Bloody Marys were fabulous too. The desserts were innovative, packed with flavor, and perfectly portioned. I’ve traveled extensively and dined in more Michelin-starred restaurants than I can count—something the previous owners may never have realized. This establishment, under its new management, is truly remarkable. Those who can’t see past the transitional phase or the fresh ownership may not appreciate what it offers, which is something authentic. I’m thrilled they’ve reopened with such style and flair, executing the basics exceptionally well while being an integral part of the community. Keep up the great work—you’re on the path to fabulous success; there’s nothing quite like this in Kent!"

"Visited here in Sept 23 for an executive dinner that we were hosting for various senior business leaders. We booked out the whole venue, which was the perfect size and atmosphere for the intimate and exclusive feel that we wanted, plus a convenient location. The TV that shows into the kitchen was fascinating, and the record player was put to use towards the end of the evening! Caroline from the venue helped us organise the event in advance and was great to deal with. We were fortunate with the weather so were able to enjoy a welcome drinks reception out the front of the venue, and have the door open all evening to let the balmy night in. We had the 7 course taster menu and it was simply OUTSTANDING so many of our guests commented on how delicious it was, particularly the beef steak course! It was so tasty that I even enjoyed the fish dish (not usual for me! . Service on the night was exemplary, the courses were brought out at just the right intervals so you weren't waiting ages but also not being rushed. The chef came out to greet us after the final course, which was a lovely touch and meant we could thank him. Overall, we had really great feedback from our guests, everyone loved it thank you for making our event such a success! We would definitely book again, and I know a few of our guests have already recommended it to their own companies for executive dinners! Would not hesitate to recommend."

"Used to stop here for the great bacon rolls. Previous stop realised that they had changed the bacon, not so streaky and fattier so decided to ask for poached eggs on brown toast. Waited for some time and eventually served at the table with brown bread resembling cardboard and 2 hard boiled , but supposedly poached eggs! Spoke to a young lady who was table serving and asked who would have carried out the “poaching ” which she admitted being responsible. It was pointed out to her that poached eggs should not be hard boiled and that we were very disappointed. She offered to get the manager to come and see us. Few minutes later a young man came through and immediately accused us of being nasty to the lady. He was advised that we were perfectly within our rights to point out the failing and in no way had we been nasty. At this point the lady came over, had obviously been crying, and was asked by us if we had been nasty to which she replied no and apologised. The young man was advised that if he wished to speak to his customers he should get the facts straight before making such accusations. He was also asked where the manager was and replied that he was busy in the kitchen so wasn’t coming out to speak to us. The restaurant at this time was almost empty. It was pointed out that this was a terrible lack of appreciation to his customers and we left. It was also observed that on several occasions the young lads that were carrying through plates with buns there on were holding the buns on the plate with their fingers, total lack of hygiene. Won’t be back!"
