"My wife and I always like to go out for a Christmas meal before the big day – and Castle Barton never lets us down! The food is traditional home cooked produce served by smiling and friendly waitresses, the quality and quantity was just superb; and as I said to the Chef afterwards: “It was just like my Mum’s cooking!” – to which he replied that his Mum had taught him to cook and that was just what he always aimed for .. traditional home cooked food. The dining room was decorated in a beautiful and traditional way with no gaudy flashing lights but a picturesque scene of the 12 days of Christmas in one corner, and ornate décor around the warming open log fire. I cannot fault anything and the price for the two of us was incredible, long may Castle Barton be there to serve the local community (we are from Marldon! PS: I hope they soon manage to get the access lighting up the front path sorted – the rain and wetness gets into everything!"

It's an 80s menu prepared by someone who knows what they're doing, much of the menu is prepared in house. Service is a little slow but polite and professional. Sensible prices. There is a lovely garden if the sun is out.

Very friendly, welcoming, unexpected find on a family day out! Went to Compton Castle and stumbled across the road to find this sweet place, beers, wines, just so relaxing, refreshing to find a place for value for money!

a wonderful afternoon in the restaurant castle barton. a quirky 'grandma's dining room ' vibe and tasty eating at a very cheap price. will return very soon to enjoy another chocolate roulade with real tinted cream, although the braut tomaten brush and game cake were just as good! View menu

We stumbled across this quaint place after visiting the National Trust property opposite. Compton Castle doesn’t seem to have its own tea room but this made a welcome alternative with delicious cakes, flapjacks and a refreshing pot of tea all enjoyed in their sunny hillside garden.

Superb quant setting, so good we went twice. We were staying at Compton Pool Farm walked to Barton Castle, then called into the restaurant opposite for afternoon tea which was so delicious, we booked for dinner Friday evening. The lady that served us was so friendly helpful and the food was excellent as well as being very good value for money. Would definitely recommend would go again.

We had tea and cake at this restaurant. The tea was reminiscent of the kind we make at home - hot and strong, just the way we like it. The carrot cake and lemon cake were homemade and delicious. The prices were very reasonable, which was a pleasant surprise. The service was excellent. We decided to visit after touring Compton Castle, as there was no cafe there. The restaurant, Castle Barton, was conveniently located just opposite the castle. The setting was lovely. View menu

Went to visit Compton Castle and as they did not have refreshments there, we crossed the road to this lovely place. Prior to our timed visit, we had morning coffee which was really nice Dow Egberts served in a cafetiere. The waitress was the daughter of the owners and it was nice to be informed of the business they have there, with the cafe, restaurant and an outdoor catering business. We returned for lunch a really nice baguette and a cream tea. The grounds were lovely, and everything was very English about the place.

This tea room/restaurant is delightful. The food is of excellent quality, and the ambiance is charmingly old-fashioned, making it feel like you're having a meal in someone's cozy living room. They also have a lovely outdoor garden area, perfect for enjoying your meal if the weather permits. The paninis were freshly made and came with a generous portion of salad garnish, crisps, and delicious coleslaw. The service may be a bit slow, but it is well worth the wait. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area or visiting the National Trust's Compton Castle.

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
