"We were visiting Carcassonne for three nights, arriving on a Sunday evening. Knowing that there would be few restaurants open at that time we did a search on Trip Advisor for good restaurants. We sent emails to four restaurants that caught our eye and had replies from two. As I have a food allergy we were quite concerned that it would be difficult to find a good restaurant. How wrong we were! The lovely chef proprietor, Michele, emailed us back very quickly and said that she was unable to send us her menu as she shops each morning for the fresh meat etc and then makes her menu based on what she has bought. She said that it wouldn't be a problem to cook for us as everything is prepared freshly. We duly booked for 8:30 pm and were very impressed by the menu for that evening. As a starter my husband had a glorious salad of watermelon, a feta-type cheese, black olives and lovely salad leaves and said that it was delicious. I chose the dried ham, melon and leaves, which was equally good. Both portions were very big. The waitress asked if everything was okay and we told her the food was wonderful. The lovely chef, Michele, came out to introduce herself to us just before the main course and told us a bit about the food and her ethos for good cooking. As our main course we both had brochettes of rump steak served with vegetables. Divine! There were two brochettes each, wow! Such enormous portions. Feeling very, very full we only had ice cream as dessert, but the vanilla was the best that we had ever tasted. We had eaten so well that we I needed to walk around the town for an hour before we could contemplate going back to the apartment. The food was so good that we wanted to re-book, but the lovely chef, Michele, said that she was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so we booked for Wednesday lunchtime as we were returning to England that evening. We were asked what we would like to eat and Michele said that she would make sure she bought it. My husband chose magret of duck and I had a veal chop. Again, the food was absolutely wonderful. Knowing how big the portions were we chose to share a starter and dessert. As a starter we had warmed Camembert cheese and a big salad of cherry tomatoes and mixed leaves and again had ice cream for dessert. The main courses were as big as expected and we didn't need anything else for the rest of the day!The restaurant is located near the Pont Vieux and so is easily accessible from both the new and old cities. The food prices are very reasonable and the drinks are far from expensive. If you are visiting Carcassonne I urge you to go to this restaurant, I know that you will not be disappointed. Should you also have a food allergy, then email Michele, I am sure that she would do her very best to accommodate your allergy. In short, wonderful food wonderful chef."

Not a vegetarian restaurant but when I emailed they offered starters without meat and omelette. Absolutely delicious, very fresh with a quirky variety of flavours which worked. So good we're coming back again tomorrow - well worth a visit.

Michelle, the owner and chief of Le Brassens is the real deal from start to finish. You come in for having a real home cooked dish, not a pre-made dish barely out of its plastic bag that will get heated in a microwave. So don't get to picky about the simplify of the place, enter in for what does really matter: the inimitable taste of real food fresh made from the fourneau.Bravo Michelle. Such a pleasure meeting you.

Michelle opened her restaurant about 3 years ago after retrurning to her region from the middle east. She does all the cooking, using local ingredients (except in a few well noted cases, and produces delicious French country fare. We had "poulet fermiere", duck and steak, and all were excellent. The restaurant is well located, a few steps from the old bridge to the castle and the gate to old town Bastide. This is the kind of place the foreign visitor hopes to find when coming to southern France!

Tucked away in a quiet street in Carcassonne’s bastide is this unassuming gem. Named after one of my favourite singers [but without any of his music] this is a delightful, home cooked, classic French restaurant. Set menu with some of the tastiest food imaginable. Starters followed...by main courses chicken or asian beef our night and exceptional dessert. Charming front of house service that simply exuded a welcome including our son and dog and the presene of the chef herself. Wonderful, memorable food in a night to remember. Thank you!

there was an immediately warm, family-like feeling when we came to dinner - 10 minutes before the opening time, the restaurant was dark inside. only then came the owner/cook to open the door, and immediately they knew that we were the couple who had called to make a reservation. the lights went on, we were invited, and we went on to have a wonderful meal. all that the cook does is fresh, you guys were a charming host, and the waitress was great. a bottle of corbieres made every bite, and we have learned a lot about local cuisine, cheese and wine. plan to come back a few more times before they return to new york.

If you are looking for an authentic, excellent, restaurant where you are treated like a friend (a little French probably helps, but the owner/cook speaks English), this is the place! We happened on it near closing time at about 9 PM. We were served by the delightful owner who fussed over us and made us feel most welcome. We had the stuffed zucchini, a cheese plate (seemed right out of a movie) and salad. All excellent and prepared/cooked to perfection. We are from Rome and live in Paris and the San Francisco Bay Area, so have been around the block as far as good food is concerned, Sure everyone would be pleased!

We had a lovely dinner at le Brassens, we had viewed the restaurant on tripadvisor however as the menu changes we had no idea what to expect. It is down a quiet side street (open on a Sunday! and there were 3 options for each...course. The chef Michelle is very accommodating as we had a vegetarian in the group one of the starters was suitable but a main course was created and it was delightful. All the food was lovely and homemade, no frozen gimmicks when it is gone,it’s gone. The three courses are very reasonable at €20 however you can get one or two the wine and beer is also very reasonable. It was very busy so we had to wait at times but it was not a concern as we could see they were busy...

"Visited today for lunch after reading a recent review about the high quality of food on offer. We were not disappointed! It was superb. There were 3 choices on each of the courses with one vegan option on each course. I had chicken fricassie which was the most delicious chicken dish I've had for a very long time. The meat was so tender, it fell away from the bone; the mushroom sauce was deliciously tasty - it wasn't over seasoned. My OH had tofu wok which he really enjoyed. Both were served with rice and runner beans. The starter was a dish of 2 types of melon one of which was watermelon, with feta. We didn't think it sounded great but we were very wrong. It was served with a dash of vinaigrette made with a light oil, a tiny bit of honey and toasted flaked almonds and was surprisingly interesting. All the flavours worked so well together. For dessert OH had the cheese plate with 3 different types of cheese which he loved but it couldn't have been better than my raspberry Eaton mess which was particularly good as it wasn't overly sweet. All for €18 each AND it was all organic! We sat outside in the courtyard which was a very pleasant area. The ambiance throughout was of calm. No background music, no clattering noises or shouting from the kitchen area. It was a little oasis of refined lunchtime dining, The service was impeccable. The young man who served us was very impressive and able to tell us what ingredients were used in the vinaigrette. It goes without saying that the high standard of food and service were also reflected in the high levels of cleanliness throughout. We only wish we'd discovered this place sooner and will be back again as soon as I can trust the OH's arm"
