"Walking down Ruttenscheider Strasse (close to our hotel, the Atlantic Congress) my co-workers and I found this pizza and pasta restaurant. We decided to give it a go. The restaurant has a nice back room that seemed quieter than up-front. We sat down and were quickly given menus. When the waitress was back to take our orders there was some difficulty in understanding the size of the pizzas. Our German was non-existent. Her English was limited. I should have used Google Translate. However, we marched forward and each ordered a different pizza. Oops! We had no idea that ONE pizza could have served all four of us. Prices were so reasonable that we assumed they'd be personal-pizza-sized. Not so! In the end, the crusts were so thin that we did a pretty good job with four of us and four pizzas. They were delicious and really some of the best pizzas we'd all had outside of Italy. Next time in Essen, we'll be back."

Long waiting times and unfriendly staff. The risotto was tasteless and it took 30 minutes to arrive. They refused to serve tapwater.

A group of 10 was well-fed here late at night. The pizza was big and above average. The pasta was also tasty. Also, a decent beer. A good late night place in essen.

We called in for yet another Italian and was very pleasantly surprised. The surroundings were great, staff terrific and food .... well just great. As others have noted the pizzas are enormous, would recommend sharing as these are too big for one. Honest. But give it a try

Service really slow. Waiters looked uninterested in customers or maybe they thought they were over-worked. We were a party of 10 and after waiting 20 mins to be acknowledged we did find a waiter who was friendly. The food that was served was excellent but one salad came when all others were almost finished and another salad to-go never came!!! Such a shame.

Like a lot of the reviews on here we found the pizza was much better than average, but was let down by the service. We had just arrived by train from London and were looking for an easy meal before attending Spiele Essen the next day. The restaurant was very very busy which might explain why the staff were unfriendly. I wouldn't recommend it, only because of the service.

The food was really salty. We had a Minestrone, Lasagna and Artichoke pasta. They were good but everything was so salty we could‘t finish it.We would give it another try, because the seasoning was good, and the pasta was well made...maybe that day the cook was happy ;)The espresso was awful and we ordered a Dueto of desserts: Pannacotta (a bit gummier than what we like and bland) and Tiramisú (this we couldn't eat, the consistency was grainy, and overall awful)

I was too late to buy something at the local Christmas market and opted for this restaurant as a consolation. The weather was cool and the alfresco seating on the large open square was not available. The service was quite prompt and the wine I ordered, an ordinary Chianti, arrived long before the food. The lasagna was clearly reheated and served hot, directly from the oven and tasted ok although the cheese was obviously not mozzarella. The Bologna style sauce contained meat, which one can no longer take for granted many restaurants are substituting minced beef for processed ham from a super market and it is stated in the fine print on the menu. So L'Osteria score positively for this. The por...
