"A Saturday in mid March. A group of 6 of us had a look in for a drink and a bite of lunch. There were other customers in so there was a bit of atmosphere but it certainly didn’t seem overly busy. We got a seat, bought a beer, and perused the lunchtime menu. Then it got interesting there was much confusion between the bar and kitchen staff as to which items on the menu were available or not. Orders were placed and had to be changed when it became apparent they didn’t have to basic ingredients/foodstuffs to make them. When our “baguettes” arrived they were just bread buns. A beef and onion bun lacked onion. Similarly, pork and apple lacked apple. On speaking with staff they seemed particularly exasperated with things. They explained that the landlady had recently opened a cafe 4 doors up and rather than being organised and order foodstuffs for the cafe, she was merely raiding the kitchens at this pub leaving the stock depleted and not communicating this fact. This situation was not the fault of the kitchen or bar staff who seemed frustrated at it all. The place was just badly managed, had an air of chaos, and produced “baguettes” that weren’t and were missing items. Seems that the landlady should start running the place properly. Her staff certainly weren’t impressed!! Oh, and the ‘inspirational’ and ‘funny’ quotes written on the walls with thick black marker pen (with bad grammar) are just naff! Would we recommend the place. Nope. Would we go back again. Nope."

A good traditional pub serving excellent traditional pub food. The pies are extremely tasty. The local Black Sheep beer is very good. The staff were cheerful and helpful.

A lovely, friendly pub which feels cosy and is just a traditional British pub. The food was good and the staff friendly. It’s also dog friendly, which was a bonus. We’d happily eat here again. View menu

With a homely atmosphere and friendly staff this pub is an absolute gem. We enjoyed a tasty lunch and our son was really impressed by the vegetarian burger which wasn’t the usual plant based “meat”. All meals were 10/10 and the chips and onion rings were superb. Cannot rate highly enough!

Stayed here this week, absolutely fabulous , Sharon and Ken are great hosts and actually class them as friends now. The locals we met, Irish guy with the boxer dog and ball, Rosie, Midge, Sam, lady with broken ankle (Ellen or Helen) Ed the Tinder legend, the 4 o'clock club etc etc!! Really nice place, excellent food, real ale, wine and topped off by excellent people View menu

The lunch menu was OK offering the usual pub food. Bit surprised to be told that they’d have to check if still doing lunch when we enquired at 1:10pm during the week. Service was acceptable but wouldn’t describe as friendly. The lager and lemonade both seemed to be off so an underwhelming drink after a lovely morning’s walk. I got the impression that evenings would be a better time to visit as had events advertised on the board to suggest the locals attend support

We stayed in Middleham for a family Easter break and visited the Richard iii pub for dinner on the first evening. It 's a traditional pub, no frills and caters for local workers and walkers really. The prices aren 't cheap (steak pie chips £15) and we expected good quality pub grub, unfortunately the food was a real let down. Greasy tasting burger, very average chilli and a 'not great ' pizza (cheap meat on the meat-feast) Lots of local workers still in their dirty clothes drinking right next to our table and swearing quite a lot in loud conversation, not exactly what you want during a £60 family meal. OK for a drink after a muddy dog walk but that 's all.

"We arrived frazzled because we drove around the grounds in the dark not knowing where to go. The signage inside the grounds is no help at all. Allow time for this if you haven't been before. Fortunately we had because we wanted a pre dinner drink in the bar before we ate. Even when we did arrive we weren't sure if we had arrived at the back entrance because we stood for ages with no welcome or acknowledgement. A very disappointing start to our evening. When someone did come they didn't take our coats. We went through to the snug for a drink. They gave us menus and went away. Later came back for our order. We got our drinks and ordered our food. Then very quickly afterwards we were asked to go through to the restaurant. We had only had a couple of sips of our drinks and it was still prior to the time we had actually booked our table for (7.30pm). We felt rushed. The food came and was fabulous. I had the beetroot starter which had beautifully cooked beetroots and some pickles. It also had a grain through it. I couldn't remember what the grain was so asked a member of staff. She didn't know so went away to ask and came back saying it was probably buckwheat....probably! My main was pork belly with parsnip and an apple reduction. The pork could have been cooked a little longer. I think belly needs to be very well cooked until really soft. The top skin was impossible to cut through as it was not crisp, I couldn't eat it. A steak knife would have helped. Having said that it was still a good dish which could have been excellent. We had sides of mashed potato and greens with pickles both superb. The presentation of both dishes was innovative and inviting. Portion size was good too not tiny portions of fiddled with food which I much prefer. The service was not as polished as the food. There was no obvious manager and we had different servers which is never quite as good as one for the entire meal. The servers were scruffy not appropriate for such a lovely building. Overall it was OK but could have been superb with more attention to some details. Service: 2 Location: 3"
