"We came across this bistro on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The outside tables were all full, many with mothers and children meeting friends while their children played ( Just to be clear: not a problem at all, nice lively atmosphere). Like so many other Hamburg restaurants the Riva offered Bavarian fayre as "Oktoberfest". We only ordered from that special menu, so can't say much about the standard menu, except that the Flammkuchen (like a thin crispy pizza) looked good and large. We had 2x beef fillets on chanterelles mushrooms with truffelled French fries- sounds a little strange but the fries tasted more of truffles than many pasta dishes in Italian restaurants. The thick steak was perfect to our taste although nobody had asked how we wanted it (medium rare). I had a pork hock with crispy crackling, mashed potatoes from real potatoes with bits, and sauerkraut- all perfectly done. It's the first time I've had hock served off the bone and I liked it a lot. The glasses of tap water we ordered (as well as wine) came without complaints as is sometimes the case. The downside was that we had to wait almost an hour for the food. The one young waitress was quite busy but still found time to stand outside for a smoke and to check her phone. We asked about an item on the specials menu and she didn't know it. It turned out to be a spelling mistake... I was surprised she wasn't more familiar with the menu.Inside was dark and empty, maybe good on an evening but not a sunny afternoon."

We got recommended this restaurant from our concierge and it was so worth it. The views from the restaurant towards the harbour with major ships passing by were truly an joy to watch. The service were a bit slow to begin with however the friendliness...of the staff made up for it by far. Food quality was great (portions are however small) and there were plenty of different options on the menu to choose from.

My wife and l were part of a party of 12 guests booked for evening dinner at this restaurant, the service we received was very poor from the start and it got worse as the evening went by, 10 people having there main meal put in front of them waiting for the other two to arrive and after several minutes the waitress came back and said "sorry l dropped them in the kitchen" when they eventually arrived one meal was wrong ! so more waiting, by this time meals are now cold. throughout the evening the drinks were also slow to be served and when arrived just put on the end of the table, we complained when the bill arrived regarding poor service but the waitress was not interested, as for the standa... Went there with the husband for a (very) late breakfast. On the menu it says the breakfast is served until We sat down and ordered coffee, that took more than minutes to deliver. We asked what's going on with it, finally got it...and then wanted to order breakfast. My phone said it was and we were told that they don't serve breakfast anymore and can't even offer eggs. If they didn't need minutes to get us the coffee we would have made it. And, seriously, minutes too late?! In the end the husband had a toast (was just that, pieces of white bread with salami and cheese in between, didn't come with a salad or anything) and I had the camambert Flamkuchen which was way too sweet. I picked out the...

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
