"Visited yesterday for a carvery. Paid for a vegetarian option of plant based chicken breast and a large carvery with pigs in blankets. We paid extra for both the vegetarian option and the pigs. We were told that there would be a 10 min delay as the vegetarian option has to be cooked and had no problem with this. The lad on the carvery went and placed the order for us and we hung around waiting for it to done. 20 mins later we got back in the queue, when we got to the front we were told that the veg chicken hadn’t been put in the oven and would be another 15 to 20 mins. At this point I opted to just have the vegetables. My partner’s pigs in blankets hadn’t been prepared and he was told if he wanted them he would have to wait another 15 mins. He decided to not wait or he wanted to eat with me. What should have been a quick visit took over an hour for a mediocre, at best, carvery that we ended up being overcharged for as a result of very poor communication between staff. I can’t understand why the woman who took our order at the till didn’t go into the kitchen, which is just behind her, or even pass the message onto the carvery staff, that there had been additions made to their “normal” menu. This would have been far more efficient and would have meant we would have got the vegetarian option and the pigs in blankets we had paid for. It’s a shame as could be a good place if run more efficiently. We won’t go back."

The service provided by Jess was excellent. She had a friendly smile and was always polite. The food was lovely, and I will definitely be returning.

Came for lunch and I wasn’t disappointed. Lovely beef that melted in your mouth, big choice of veggies and the roast potatoes were really crispy. Would recommend the carvery.

Visited on Saturday 18th November, usually you are advised that the plates are hot. Turkey was dry and cold and the vegetables were not much warmer considering they had just come out of the kitchen. Have booked a Christmas meal hope that's better

Booked to go on Bonfire night as we were without cooking facilities at home. It was quite quiet at around 6.30 so we were served really quickly, the staff were pleasent but I’m afraid the food was let it down. My wife’s ordered scampi which was over cooked and hard, I opted for the traditional carvery and was unable to eat any of the meat as it was just too over cooked, dry and hard. I ate less than half of my plate. This place may suit the all you can eat Brigade but not for me

We recently dined at this restaurant for dinner. While the food was good, the service was incredibly slow and unhelpful. I placed my order through the app but had to go to the bar after waiting 15 minutes for drinks. The wait for the carvery was also long, with my husband finishing his meal before I returned. When my husband went to the bar for another drink, there was another 10-minute wait. Despite having plenty of staff, they were preoccupied chatting at the bar and neglecting to clean the half-filled restaurant. I observed staff aimlessly walking around, ignoring the dirty tables.

Our experience at this restaurant was a bit of a mixed bag. The exterior is uninviting, with litter, cigarette butts, poorly marked parking, missing signage, and a drab building. When we visited, the steps were icy with no sand or salt to prevent slipping. The foyer was dirty, dull, and unwelcoming. However, the staff were friendly, although some struggled with the till, leading to delays. The food was good overall, but the thickness of the meat carved varied depending on the person serving. Some chairs were dirty and in need of replacement, and the whole place could benefit from a refresh. Despite these issues, we will return for the carvery as it is convenient and we generally enjoy our me...

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
