"We went to this restaurant for dinner and to watch a football game while we were staying at a nearby lodge. We had made a reservation for 5pm. When we arrived, the man at the bar told us to sit wherever we liked, but mentioned there was a private event in the back. We chose to sit in "the snug," a cozy and secluded area. The bartender brought us menus and informed us that our order would be taken after 5pm, when the chef was ready. The food was delicious, especially my husband's steak pie which was generously filled with tender pieces of meat. However, we were not asked if we wanted another drink or dessert, and felt a bit neglected. When we went to pay at the bar, we inquired about watching the football game, but the sports bar was too crowded. We moved to another section of the bar, where the server told us she would be with us shortly, but then prioritized serving someone else. We didn't feel very welcomed and it seemed like more of a place for regular customers. Although the food was good, we probably won't be returning."

Had a great time, the food was good and there was a good selection of beers. Really lovely old building. Will come again.

Visited twice in a week and had two lovely meals. Recommend the burgers and the steak pie. Good prices for food and drinks are at a really good price (and good choice) for a hotel.

We arrived to check in after a long weary drive to find the door locked a local then told me that the landlord is in prison for fraud it would have been polite to inform me of the situation, and not waste my time and effort View menu

We're an American couple traveling by narrowboat, and after what seems like a few hundred ham and cheese sandwiches,we had a great dinner tonight. Highly recommend the sirloin. Friendly, cozy place that was perfect for a nice evening.

I went to this restaurant for a meal and initially enjoyed the great service and food. However, my experience was tainted when the staff took a break and began using foul language and smoking while we were dining. They continued to swear loudly even when another family with a young child was present, which I found disrespectful.

Absolutely fantastic little place. Staff are all chatty and welcoming. Prices are great. Food was good (we had a Limited menu which was still great) heard the chef is very young and training so gave the benefit of the doubt but all was fantastic. Came back three times whilst staying here for a few days just for drinks as it was cosy and welcoming. View menu

A family of eight sat in the beer garden at the restaurant. Unfortunately, when they arrived, they saw kitchen staff taking a break outside. This was not a great start to their dining experience. They ordered their meals, but only the child's burger was satisfactory. Everything else was overcooked and burnt. The children's meals came out last, with fish fingers that were so burnt they were inedible. One adult ordered a gluten-free burger, but they had to apologize after realizing they had run out of gluten-free buns and served a burnt burger instead. The lasagne had chunks of solid béchamel and lacked flavor. No staff came to check if everything was okay, so the family waited for their plate...

It's a while since we last ate at The Black Lion and it will be an even longer time before we return. Calling for lunch we were told there would be a ten minute wait. Ten minutes? It was forty and there was only one other table being served in the dining room. We selected our meals. My husband chose from the vegetarian menu and received cold vegetables, and when he asked where the new potatoes were (he'd been given a dollop of mashed potatoes) was told they'd run out! My meal of tasteless scampi and seriously over cooked chips arrived looking brown and extremely unappetising there were no peas, they'd run out. There was no offer of a substitute and I suspect the overcooked chips could have b...

"Beautifull hotel, I guess one can call it trendy , but I just don 't understand how they can justify the price £130/night and that most of the time will go to £160 as they run out of entry level ones. So I guess the answer is there because people pay for it! But let 's just make some relevant comparisons Birmingham Grand literally in the heart of the city, brand new, 5* hotel, with all recently decorated rooms to the highest standard is £135 15 for breakfast. Needless to say rooms are air conditioned, fully equipped and genuinelly very posh. Hotel has lifts, has porters and the service is top notch. The Lion is barelly 4* just for trendiness alone, but the actual quality of furnishing is closer to 3*, has no lift and you will be lugging your bags up and down mutiple flights of stairs (and I mean multiple like 8 going up and down) trought narrow corridors to mediocre room (nothing wrong with it just mediocre) which isn 't even air conditioned. Sorry, I just don 't get it. That said restaurant is good fully fine dining if you are into it. Althought in my oppinion it doesn 't fit into the rest of the hotel. So it is ~3.5* hotel which is very youghtfull and trendy and then you get 5* fine dining with very tiny portions for the dinner (which is not criticism of restaurant, it is very good on it 's own). In conclussion I just don 't get what niche this hotel is filling, who stays there and why. The price for the rooms should be £75 95 tops. Shreesbury is not exactly prime tourists destination either (at least shouldn 't). But it seems it is working out for them, I just would not recommend it, I would not stay in it again and it is definatelly not worth the price. Neither in isolation, nor in comparison."

"Open since 1970 and located on Mardol, one of Shrewsbury’s oldest streets @thecurryhouseshrewsbury serves locally sourced ingredients married with traditional spices and chillies from the Indian subcontinent, a match made in heaven. 5 5 Recommended Price No better way to kick off proceedings but with popadoms, chutneys and fresh onion salad. On to appetisers and there are so many tempting dishes to choose with many of these exclusive to the curry house. Our first time trying Pani Puri. A sweet and spicy hot street food snack filled with chickpeas and tamarind sat on a bed of crunchy, nutty Bombay mix. With a building but pleasant heat, definitely something everyone should try. The quality and freshness of the seafood was exceptional. Spicy king prawns were huge and cooked to perfection. Charred on the outside for flavour but juicy and meaty. Trio of King scallops were beautifully tender and of a good size with sweetness from the tamarind liquor. Lamb rogan Josh tender lamb shoulder in a medium hot ginger tomato and onion sauce. A strong take on a traditional favourite of ours. Fresh from the Tandoor a generous mix of marinaded chicken, lamb, king prawns and a chargrilled lamb chop. The Tandoori deluxe massalla sauce was the perfect blend of sweetness melting into a subtle heat which brought the dish together perfectly. The curry house takes traditional dishes and flavours from the Indian subcontinent and elevates them to a level beyond expectations. Thank you for our invite to share the exciting menu created with passion and creativity. "Fantastic range of small dishes and meals for lunch and dinner. The menu ranges from scandi to oriental, so something for everyone. The menu is clearly marked with allergens, including what meals can be adapted. The chicken is halal and vegan and vegetarian options are plentiful. The cocktail and mocktail menu is great and they do one of the best espresso martinis in Shrewsbury. The decor is modern and comfortable and there is plenty of space. As a wheelchair user, I can get into the ground floor and to a table. The outside seats are up a small step, but the whole front of the building is a retractable wall of windows, so I can still get the feeling of eating outside in good weather. The service is friendly and knowledgeable about allergies, the menu and the wine list. The staff are helpful and unobtrusive. The only difficulty for me (hence the 4 star review) is that the accessible bathroom is next door, in their sister bar, Libertine. Unfortunately, libertine isn't open the same hours as HotRS, so I can only use it at certain times. The ladies does have a lock on the door, so staff have cleared the ladies toilets, which allowed me to take my chair in and lock the door. I had to walk a couple of steps to get into a stall but my chair was safely with me. Of course, there is also no alarm cord, but they stood outside the door so would have heard if I shouted for help."
